- so whats the difference between ideologies? well apparently alot, and i mean alot. hearts of iron 4 soviet start with communism and apparently get some boosting bonuses, germany who has fascism can move troops through enemy territory, non aligned are amazing with bonuses to removing tension, and finally america or democracy's can take other nations resources first. so hope you enjoy this hoi4 tutorial

As crazy as it seems I do agree with you, they cause less World tension. They can do virtually almost anything and Axis power can do aside from boosting and declare war when they want, aside from everything else it seems like non-aligned is overpowered and that's why it can't be boosted 😁

The way I see it, non-aligned nations belong in 1 of 3 groups:
- Monarchies, like Romania and Albania
- Warlord nations, like the Chinese states in 1936
- Finland, which is classified as non-aligned, but has democratic elections (???)

If you mean vanilla as in playing without mods, then Finland starts out as neutral, but in every aspect behaves like democratic nation (has elections and every policy that democratic nations have). These days I'm half-believing it is to avoid Allies AI (democratic) from inviting Finland to their faction (because democratic countries invite democratic countries to faction easily).
This could easily make the war a cluster, if Finland is under attack from the Soviets due to Soviet Union focuses and Allies decide to invite Finland into their faction and thus end up in war against the Comintern while fighting the Axis as well.
actually, Finland must be fachist from the start because they started their nation by very fachist methods like killing russian civillians and other bad stuff

The ideologies in HOI4 are extremely sterile and barely work like actual ideologies. They are more like pro-Allies, pro-Axis and pro-Comintern factions. This is also why there would be an ideology called non-alligned in the game, even if there isn't such a thing in real life (Non-alligned only existed as a foreign policy, not a full ideology).

Democracy isn't an ideology, but neither is Capitalism. An exact name for that strain of thought is hard because it includes conservatives, liberals and social democrats. I would have to say that if you count National Socialism as Fascist you could easily call Falangism Fascist too. The problem remains that you need to have somewhat broad categories, I think HOI 3 does this way better.
Communism has a bunch of fracturous splits in it too, with Lenenism, Trotskyism, Stalinism, Marxism, and Maoism, and they don't get along very well either. Basically any nation has its own brand of ideology. Fascism in Italy isn't going to be the same as Fascism in, say, Iran (since I played as them recently).
At some point, you're using umbrella terms, otherwise you're splitting all the countries into their own sorts of ideology.
Mike De Jong the next big update should fix all the politics and diplomacy in my opinion.

The problem with Monarchism as an independent faction, how would this be different than Non-Aligned? And if you look at the BIg Three Allies, US and France are Republics while UK would be a Monarchism by definition.

Gameplay wise here is the answer:
Democracies: only redeeming quality is joining the Allies but even then...
Non-Aligned: Less shitty than democracies but still crappy because no allies
Communist & Fascist: Won't put you to sleep
Im 2 years late but i just had a game with the non-aligned german empire and had a bunch of allies: austria-hungary, Italy, Yugoslavia...

Historical note: the Soviets abolished sentences over 10 years but kept the death penalty, figuring that 10 years was long enough to either reform prisoners or go beyond hope of reforming them. Going to the Gulag for 10 years was the maximum sentence, and even that was not typical. If you were caught doing something extremely heinous though, the sentence was death, often by firing squad.
Keep in mind, however, that what was seen as extremely heinous in the USSR is very different from what was seen as extremely heinous in the west. There were very severe crimes in the USSR that were legal in the west and very severe crimes in the west that were legal in the USSR.

Can't force a nation to adopt your ideology means that you cannot change their goverment at the peace conference. If you are a democracy you can make your enemy a democracy.
Really liking your HOI 4 videos mate. Having up to date explanations is pretty helpful for us newbs. Just a small request, the red text is hard to see for people with red-green color blindness like myself.
Something else that may have caused that, I just looked and after the very first explanation when I put it down for Russia. I forgot to add text for the rest of the ideologies,😐, I will take your advice for the future though
I don’t think you talked about “sub ideologies”.
The sub ideologies would be like either the Democratic Party or republican part in charge of the US, despotism as monarchist for non aligned or Oligarchy, nationalist socialism for germany while something else for Italy, etc.
They _might_ change tension limits for different nations, but I need to verify that. The only other noticeable difference is the opinion modifier.
A monarchist Germany would be a despotism, while Poland is an Oligarchy non aligned. Them both being non aligned gives a +10 opinion modifier,
Monarchist Germany and another despotism non-aligned would get a +20 opinion modifier.
UK in hoi4 is democratic nation.

'Democratic' only refers to: Let's the people vote. It doesn't refer to how many people you let vote, where they are concentrated or what the political course of action of the country is. The British Empire let males in GB vote and enslaved half of the globe. That's democratic in the sense the word is generally used. The Greek city states also let wealthy male citizens vote and often had high percentages of enslaved population.
Democratic certainly does not mean 'morally good'. I mean - look at what the USA has been doing for decades in real life.
At 14:50,you did not take into account party inertia and ideology drift defense.Basically,party inertia means that the higher the support for a ideology in a country, the harder it is to grow further.
Now, I distinctly remember turning other countries Democratic at the cost of war score when I was playing as the US and I had helped the Allies cap Germany. In fact, I flipped Germany Democratic, despite the Soviets also being at war and having war score against them as well.
Nonaligned seems like military states fresh from conflict/civil war (Mexico), warlord states (Chinese countries), or monarchies that aren't fascist (Romania).
Non aligned is authoritarian (has king or queen)
Also the force other countries to adopt ideology is an option in a peace deal to make a country your own ideology
Non-aligned is not always authoritarian like Finland and Turkey who were democratic

How powerful you are (same for the one you're justifying on) and how fast you can justify also determines how much world tension is generated on a war goal justification.

Not really. The game uses a mechanic where all major wars have more threat receptivity, so if you justify as Luxembourg on Germany, you'll get around 25-30wt, while justifying on Belgium would give only around 5. These values are xhanged by the said threat receptivity, alot of mods use these to great extent, like Cold war, KR and so on.
Still basically the same as what I just said, how fast part was just because once I managed to cut the justification time to 10 days with no modifiers from ideology or war with major, and damn that world tension amount was high, and I was just a minor trying to take down Argentina :c
Nice video. Very interesting. With the non aligned its cool that its 50% increased WT but the only problem is that you need a WT limit to declare war that is higher than the WT limit to have the allies guarantee. Maybe you could make a video about watching the WT and what certain countries can do at certain WT. I already know most of that stuff but I am sure it would help some people.

I have a type of government. Annorchy. That's basicly I run everything.
So for those who are curious, non-aligned usually means monarchy or semi autocratic democracy or in general something that would take to long to quantify in bonuses and negatives
that a good way to sum it up :)
New player here, is there any practical reason to pick democracy?
From my experience:
- Fascist: Huge manpower bonus, but the countries you are justifying on is more likely to be guaranteed, and you may run into resource shortages due to having lots of factories but no one is willing to trade with you (high threat generation).
- Communist: The communist faction has the potential to be crazy powerful (France and Spain can end up Communist and join). Same resource problem as the Fascists.
- Democratic: Able to guarantee, allowing you to join a defensive war. If you choose Interventionism route you can send lots of volunteers. Puppet type (Supervised State) slowly gains autonomy but also grants Operative Slots in La Resistance DLC. Cannot create Collaboration Governments.
- Non-Aligned: Versatile, able to side with any ideology, but you are severely restricted when World Tension is low. Since the name of the game is early expansion, this is the hardest ideology to play as.
i would say non aligned countries are basically countries that can be simply monarchies, anarchies, militaristic dictatorship (like one of non aligned america forms)

Mass mobilization by far, it has amazing bonuses for infantry divisions which Russia builds many of. Now if you get modernized and then start working on tanks and making large tank divisions then it might be worth it for you to add mobile Warfare Doctrine
Can't force ideology on another nation for Fascism basically means that you can't force someone to become a Fascist without puppeting them.
I wished that there were meaningful variantions in the Idealogies just like in Kaiserreich.

I'm trying to mod ideology where if chosen any puppets you control our automatically annexed on the flip side another ideology when chosen will puppet any countries within its borders that are already annexed

Non-aligned are Monarchy's, Normal Dictatorships, Oligarchies etc. Also Fascism is split into two, Normal Fascism and Nazism. Communism is split between Marxist-Leninism and Maoism. Democracy is split between Conservative, Liberal and Socalist

I feel like communism should increase factory output/building time, just any industrialization thing. Other thing that can be kinda cool is free “total mobilization” and “service by requirement” if you are at war with somebody. Democracy should have trade bonuses (which they already have) and research bonuses. Fascism is op enough and shouldn’t be changed or maybe even nerfed a bit.

Except the democratic countries had much higher output than the communists. By the end of the war the US had a larger economy than the rest of the major nations combined. So maybe something that increases output for the democratic countries but has a consumer goods increase, and a decrease in consumer goods for communists.
jjquinn295 USA had a better economy before war (arguable, but even in game they have a lot of civs) + never was fighting on land and bombed + other nations taking money in debts from USA after war was over, while soviets had to rebuild pretty much all of a country , i’m talking about very fast industrialisation that communists pull off by doing it the “hard way”. In a long run USA type of economy is better, but fast and effective industrialization is where commies really shine.
daniil ivanov I know hence the reduction in consumer goods for the communists. Say -5% consumer goods for Soviet Union and + 10% factory output and +5% consumer goods for USA. I feel that something like that would cover the fact that Stalin had more control over his economy to industrialize quickly, where as the US has better industry but has to use more of it to keep the people happy.

Forcing a government to accept an ideology in HOI4 means that during a peace deal, you can change the government (literally, there's a button for it) to whatever ideology you are.

Fascism is the way to go ,I'm a HoI4 noob and it's so easy to learn how to play this game as a fascist country!
Monarchy should be an official ideology. So strange to see monarchies either unaligned or given an ideology they are not based on which faction the monarch sided with (fascist/democratic, prime example being Japan)
Actually I kind of do agree with you on that, it would be pretty cool to be able to restore monarchies like that more often in the game
@@dustinl796 Yeah the event could read something like "Fascists and communists run rampant spreading chaos on our streets all while the democratic bureaucrats bicker among themselves and do nothing to stop it. Only the restoration of monarchy can bring us the stability we saw before the Great War.
While I am sure the main players (UK, Germany, etc.) could have more specific details.
Even extending support (something you can't do too much as non-aligned) would make sense since there were plenty of monarchist movements between the world wars, generally those who viewed the communists as a grave threat, but thought the fascists were too extreme of a response to it. And monarchists are not fond of democracy in general.
In relation to base relationship gain they could be neutral by default, but have it be decided by an earlier focus tree path. For example "King X acknowledges the fascist movement are extremists, but siding with fascist powers is required to end the communist threat." or something along those lines, at which point opinion of you would increase from fascist nations (Germany, Italy, etc.) Japan could have this built in from the get-go.
Could have similar things for democratic, focus tree could say something like "While we disapprove of their methods, siding with democratic nations is for the best. Defeating one extremist only to replace them with another won't solve the fundamental problem." or something along those lines.
No idea how the monarchies could join the comintern considering one of communism's main goals is abolishing monarchies. Maybe a sort of "deal with the devil" kind of spin.

Basically different cities Grant victory points for taking them and they are subtracted from the enemy in the current War. Once they hit 0 victory points remaining or depending upon other factors they will surrender
