All of Dillinger’s drummers were absolutely top notch, but this guy was my personal favourite, even though he only played on one album. Such a tasteful player
this guys range is incredible. he absolutely shreds with hardcore stuff like this and hes an awesome reggae/any other style you can think of. gils the man
Sharon is a more groove based drummer while Pennie is more powerful. However, they are both amazing. And full props to Gil Sharon for being able to play this, he did it well, theres very few drummers out there who can fill Chris Pennie's shoes. Gil is very versatile, he traditionally is a reggae drummer so for him to be able to do this is amazing.
I agree. I love this guy and I think he has major balls to step up and play in this band. honestly when I heard Pennie was leaving, I thought DEP would break up because no one could replace him. Gil has some issues in this band when it comes to fluidity and solid time, but at the same time he just joined this band and is new to playing this kind of music. He is a bit stiff, he rushes sometimes, and misses some things, but give him time and I think one day he'll fit perfectly.
I for one hear plenty of groove in this song. Perhaps you're looking so hard at the complexity of it that you're missing the pulse. It's very complex, but it also grooves, and in my opinion groove is incredibly important in any type of music, especially this.
I also agree but I also feel he brought a new kind of energy to the band. I'm a big fan of Chris but I can't picture him playing songs like Black Bubblegum or Mouth of Ghosts. I was worried DEP would go to hell after Chris departure too but now that I've seen what Gil is capable of, even when he doesn't flow like Pennie did, I feel they will be allright... and so we will >P
This is Panasonic Youth though. With the exception of that slower section prior to 3:29, the song is supposed to be continuously fast. Yes, a slow blast beat will unfavorably make the song uneven in a place where it shouldn't be, even for a Dillinger song.
I noticed that Gil plays the blast beat at 3:29 faster than Chris did. At live shows, I noticed that Chris would always slow down a noticeable amount at that blast beat which IMO made the song a little more disjointed.
@pushherinthesnow he's the only one of DEP's drummers that can play groove music and technical stuff. the other guys are good but lack a good pocket which doesn't really matter for DEP because it's so technical and fast.
It's a problem I have with Dillinger's live shows. Does it seemed extremely rushed to anyone else? I prefer the more grooving tempo of the album version- especially at 2:45. No dynamics whatsoever either. I LOVE Dillinger. I think they are the most important hardcore band right now. Bebop jazz rhythms with hardcore is AWESOME! But, the live stuff always disappoints me. Gil looks like he's hacking. I'm not half the drummer Gil is, but I always try to bring out inherent dynamics.
There are lots of different kinds of music, groove is only one kind. This music is obviously not meant to be "groovy," it's meant to be raw and ballsy. So I guess they succeed
I see you figured it out..but wanted everyone to know that any video we put up with a band of this caliber is always approved by the band or Gil in this case before it's posted. You can guarantee the song name is correct. ;-)
Respectfully, I don't think so. It's true hardcore has less dynamics than other genres. But, if you're showcasing rhythm, there is groove and dynamics however subtle. These should be brought out if you're performing. The problem is people don't consider it music as much as an outlet for getting crazy. And, it can be both. It's disheartening to people who listen for music's sake that the band seemingly doesn't respect the music. It's also a marketability problem.
i just compared the two drummers playing this song side by side...chris pennie is so much more fluid and relaxed with his playing even with the super technical licks, gil is great but sort of stiff, not as much feel or pocket as chris
how could you have fun playin to this music...theres no groove... i saw him playin reggae it was sick... but playin to this dang not even cuz of the money would i do this...
you are clearly not a musician if not a good one if you cannot understand the complexity of this music. If you actually listen to it instead of waving a flag at the touchline you might find it to be one of the most enjoyable styles to listen and play to. Music is not based on 'grooves', grooves are shit and boring, any dick can play one. There is a movement and structure in this song that there is no way you would ever understand.

Dire works has the best drum parts to any dillinger album.
this guys range is incredible. he absolutely shreds with hardcore stuff like this and hes an awesome reggae/any other style you can think of. gils the man
this man is a fucking genius from this to his rocksteady beats i'm just blown away
personally, i think this guy is absolutely amazing. he really has the dillinger thing down.
Why did it need to take 49 seconds to get to the video? JFC.
People didn’t really know what they were doing back then with videos lol
This guy's Reggae grooves are insane.

Damn gil, I was scared when I heard Chris wasnt recording the new cd, but after actually hearing it... I friggin love it.
This guys absolutely insane \m/

he's a fucking beast, period.
Maybe, but it's not like you can tell from this video - he's pretty much playing it note for note - I think he's a worthy replacement.

I love the ride pattern and accents around 2:30ish
hoooooooolllly shit. i agree with you mjorgensen88 in all aspect. gil certainly just tore that shit up.
The China is one of zildjian's K custom 'hybrid models', looks like a 19 inch. They were made with Akira Jimbo.

yeah what is it? It sounds amazing!
@Hobble Truest comment of all time

MetalSoHard late reply, but it's called lurch

uh pretty sure Chris and Billy have an INSANE pocket

dude i totally agree...can he come up with the kinda shit chris would make...i dont know

really? i think Pennie would nail those songs, they'd be easy for him - hell, he's playing for Coheed now, so he's used to that kinda stuff.
hahaha nice
I profit.

fuck sake i been playing guitar for 6 years and i can't near those rythms by 2h30 :|
i just compared the two drummers playing this song side by side...chris pennie is so much more fluid and relaxed with his playing even with the super technical licks, gil is great but sort of stiff, not as much feel or pocket as chris
what china is that
Chris Pennie disliked
Because these people are armchair drummers.
how could you have fun playin to this music...theres no groove... i saw him playin reggae it was sick... but playin to this dang not even cuz of the money would i do this...
theyre playing it too fast. yawn.
@pushherinthesnow Gil should stick to reggae ? That is ignorance turned up to 11

Chris Pennie is better.
