In my 53 plus years of playing and being over 68... he covered all bases. Simply the best. .. there were and are other great players but this man was the best... not open for debate!
@@Crussman499 - I was a last-minute replacement for a guitar player who had quit a road band that was booked in Lafayette on the coming weekend. We had time for one rehearsal and on the way down I rode with the drummer who had some live tapes of the band so I could at least get familiar with the material. After a couple of songs I had to say, "Man, I can't play like that". He said, "Nobody can - that's Shawn Lane". I survived the gig, barely.
I met Danny 2 months before this on a ferry boat gig his band played on Lake Champlain: he was very down to earth and pleasant. I even got to ask him about his arch nemesis, Roy Buchanan, which he hesitantly discussed with me. Sad ending to a fabulous player....The Humbler, indeed.
Danny was just one of those amazingly rare players who can translate what he's thinking IMMEDIATELY to his fingers, without having to have pre-planned licks to fall back on. Anything he could think up, he could and would play. An astounding guitarist.
You are spot on only the great Django had the same gift of playing any musical idea that came to his mind instantly and flawlessly no matter how fast or complicated
1 of my favourite tracks it gets movn what a player have most of his stuff. Still trying to learn, have his 88 elmira st book had it for years. My favourite electric player
Hey good to hear from you Greg! I haven't played in about 5 years! I acquired a disease called Dupytrens Contracture (aka Vikings Disease) that causes collagen to buildup in the palm of the hand and it closes the hand into a fist. Had surgery to remove it but I've been doing physical therapy to get it back in shape - and now I've got a cyst on my wrist that pinches my nerve so I can only play about 30 seconds at a time. I'm trying to get a date for a second surgery - hopefully soon! Living in Annapolis these last 16 years. Good hearing from you!
Ouch, Wishing you get well soon! This getting old crap is for the birds.Hopefully a keyboard is available and not as painful. I'm living in Falls Church. I spent a lot of good times in Napptown with some of my favorite people, musicians and artists. I really love the Danny Videos you have up, thanks for sharing them, he was an incredible guitarist. Stay in touch, I don't share personal stuff much on FaceBook. I still have some my old original music on Myspace/NoRowdines, and more at myspace.com/puddlepro Also can also check out my you tube page for real music. LoL. Hope to talk to you soon! I'm always on my Twitter account. @PuddleJones
Puddle Jones Yeah I still have my keyboards and I'll be sure to check out your stuff on myspace, and youtube. I don't have twitter but I'm on Facebook a couple of times a day. Let me know if you're ever in the area and we can get together!
So....notice the lack of guitar pedals and effects that Danny Gatton does not use to create the big band/jazz/blues/country explosion that comes out of a guitar designed in the 50's people! Amazing still!
Samba C That had to be a real treat! Too bad we don't have places like that much any more. I first got exposed to Danny from the guitar videos I bought. Also learned about Link Wray when I was in high school.
If not for Billy holding the root down while Gatton wailed...(and also a more than decent singer) ... The poor guy never got a bit of attention (from the camera OR from Danny) Listen! There's no way he could have been there if he didn't deserve to be. Ol'Danny was always looking towards his bass player though. ALL of these guys were outstanding.
That's a taste of DC ? Chain link fence/barbwire in front of the stage. Not how Adams Morgan was when I lived there in the 70s, used to see Gatton at the Childe Harrold
This was filmed in DC in front of the Ariel Rios Building and the Pavilion (now known as the Trump Hotel) NOT in Adams Morgan!!!! Since I shot the original film I know the fence was not added later! Again this was NOT filmed in Adams Morgan!!!!!!!
ok it showed up as a links saying taste of dc, adams morgan. I've still never seen chainlink fence in front of a stage., still ironic for it to be called a taste of dc. Anyways, always glad to hear more DG, glad you posted it!
I was there. This is the show that ended when Marion Barry and Jess Jackson invaded the stage. Mayor Barry flipped off the crowd because we wanted Danny. Not politics.
Why did Danny shoot himself, ending his life? Because he knew that this world would never fully embrace his talent. Most people just didn't get him enough to sustain him as an artist. AND I don't mean "artist" as how it's used on The Voice and other similar shows.

john k. He can make smoke come out if the water!
I'll throw one name out. Shawn Lane. But both were monsters and are greatly missed.

I been playing since I was 12 I’m 67 and I believe your right. I still scratch my head and think what If.
Along with his jaw-dropping talent Danny was also a really nice, wonderful human being.
The man was a force of nature.........he's sorely missed.

He was a shining star
Day-um! Master at work.
Danny was just plain born that way.
the "burnin' keyboard
sax cat" is Bill Holliman, aka hollow man....last I heard, he was playing with the Kentucky Headhunters, sigh....
I was standing 6 feet to your left...awesome memories...
SO good! Thanks for posting this!
Thanks a lot! Ive never seen him play this song before on video. Great stuff!
The keyboard/sax cat was burnin' - The guy was a marvel!
Dude thanks so much the sound is great and that is what counts-boy he was amazing

he s the best!!
Thanks for this vid.
Love Danny's playing.
you're welcome - he's amazing to watch
oustanding.
Geniys
That amp he's using is currently for sale on Ebay. Still won't make anyone sound like him though......
5.54 the humbler arrives! Brilliant!
Hi Pete! I remeber playing Funky town with you Ralph and Fred. Still Jamming hard! Greg L.

do you know about his "magic dingus box" ?
Samba C Yes, I did know about it. My point was how much he got out of a Tele without the extensive use of pedals. The man was a guitarists guitarist.
I used to see him every week in the clubs in DC. Roy Buchanan too
Samba C That had to be a real treat! Too bad we don't have places like that much any more. I first got exposed to Danny from the guitar videos I bought. Also learned about Link Wray when I was in high school.
Danny and Roy where the finest in that era possibly all time. Lenny Breu was no slouch as well.
Jump to 1:53 - to cut to the mustard !!
As a pro musician, when people ask the question "who is the greatest guitarist ever?", my answer is " you mean beside Danny Gatton ? "
The"Humbler!"
I'm sure he was the best guitarist since the 1960s
thats sick 2:50 in!

Yes I saw Danny at Adams Morgan too - no chain link fences there!
There's a chainlink fence w/ barbed topwire in this vid. I seriously doubt it was added post production.
This was filmed in DC in front of the Ariel Rios Building and the Pavilion (now known as the Trump Hotel) NOT in Adams Morgan!!!! Since I shot the original film I know the fence was not added later! Again this was NOT filmed in Adams Morgan!!!!!!!

RIP WHFS
not much I could do about the chain link.....
I was there. This is the show that ended when Marion Barry and Jess Jackson invaded the stage. Mayor Barry flipped off the crowd because we wanted Danny. Not politics.
I was there too - not this show, that was Adams Morgan Day! I have pictures of them on stage with Danny.
I'll bet this Tele of gold against you're soul 'cuz I think I'm better 'un you. Nice gold Telecaster, bad chain link.
prachtige muziek kamera man kan beter iets anders doen NIET BEKWAAM meschien wat gaan vissen proficiat voor de muziekanten

Its too bad that Billy Windsor sucked so bad as a singer.....
billy windsor had no business being anywhere near Gatton. I cant help but think he would have had more success with a good front man/men.
thats sick 2:50 in!
