If we did have a draft, I think the US would have to split draftees into 2 camps. One camp would be for people who are ready to be trained for combat. The other camp would have to be for people who are overweight and need to get into shape.

Lots of spouses cheat while the other half is gone. Lots of deployed soldiers cheat while deployed. If you/yours aren't in that category then good for you but using something was arbitrary as that as grounds to not volunteer for service is as disingenuous and laughable as wanting "a GI Bill that can get you a home and a business". The GI Bill pays for school so it's on you too pick something better than underwater basket weaving or gender studies. You can also take classes while on active duty but if course your chosen job may not give you the most time for it so choose wisely. Also, if you die you won't need VA healthcare.

Learn some skills and discipline have college and health insurance. If they died it would still be better than wandering through life aimlessly, in their eyes.

I’ve thought for years that dismantling our manufacturing capabilities in the name of “profit” was dumb. It is a national security issue but American companies are glad to sell IP and technologies for a quick buck at the expense of national security. This should have been and should be criminal. Allowing so much manufacturing to leave was also a mistake and again for a quick buck and should have been and be criminal. Also, when a huge war does start the children of the rich should be the first sent to the front lines since they usually try to use money and creativity to stay out when other families don’t get to pay their way out and create excuses to avoid a draft.

Because doing so meant that every citizen would have a vested interest in protecting their land. Now, how many Americans own land, vs. how many just rent? More importantly, how easy is it to access purchasing land, without an innumerable amount of laws, rules, and regulations being hung over your head? Lastly, how many of them have fulfilling work, and aren't just working because they are debt slaves?
Do you, uh, see a problem? Naw, I'm sure the massive drops in employees, the rising suicide, crime, mass shooting statistics, loss of trust in media, scientific, and academic institutions doesn't mean ANYTHING.

Lotta vets who fought for USA 🇺🇸 never had land or private properties and they still don't hence lotta homeless veterans in the country. N having private properties does not always ensure loyalty as most private property owners will be more likely to want peace with enemies rather than lose their properties in war with the enemies. They'd much prefer volunteers, as they historically perform better, are more reliable, and are not heckled by other servicemen for their classification of "draftee" or "Volunteer".
However, if we're faced with a threat beyond our current strength, or anticipate a long, drawn out war of attrition, a draft is necessary.
All the freedoms you enjoy are put at risk if the army is widdled down and nothing is done to bulster it quickly.
Besides, we rebelled against an Empire over taxes, but we still pay those.

My point wasn't arguing if the draft may be necessary, my argument was forcing us to fight is at its core un-American. I think we all understand that if America disappears or goes under new control so goes are rights, basic concept, new parents new rules. My angle is purely from a legal perspective. Pointing out that our unalienable rights aren't unalienable, only so at the allowance of the establishment. Just like Covid when they took are freedom to travel, social media can take our freedom of speech or press, like a guy smoking weed in the wrong state can get his liberty taken, the government can take our "unalienable right" to life. There's just some mental gymnastics that is involved in justifying government overreach that let you know that those rights aren't actually rights but privileges that apon a governmental decision can be taken without apprehension. I'm from a swing state and I have friends from both sides, I just see how one will get the power and try to punish the other and with the ability to bypass or misrepresent those rights the government has the ability to do whatever they want. Be it limit guns or abortion, there's tons of examples that I can keep going on.

Smaller nations need populations at least minimally trained in territorial defence, logistics, and non combat support roles, just to be able to front up an adequate resistance to a larger invader. But conscripts (people forced into service) should never be used for live combat theatres as their morale is far too fragile.
The goal should be to train recruits to a point they have the required attitude,
fitness and training where they could be mobilised quickly if the nation’s territory was invaded. Along with this would be territorial defence and logistics forces, made of local paid part time volunteers.
While a professional volunteer military remains still the best choice for a well trained force with high morale, a general population trained to be capable of contributing to a war that they can then volunteer for when needed is a valuable state asset. As is a network of local based well trained territorial defence and logistics forces that compliment and work alongside the professional military servicemen/women, freeing them from non-combat roles.

I would Academies set up which will act like High schools. If you can't afford to go to a private high school, you go to a academy at the age of 15. Which will give you both academic & occupational training but all so military training. Once the student has finished his / her time at the academy at the age of around 18, they will automatically be enrolled in to a 2 year national service program as active military members.

Smart weapon manufacturing relies on our ability to obtain semiconductors. 80% of the semiconductors used to build electronics in the United States come from Taiwan.
If China takes Taiwan we can’t rearm after depletion of our smart bombs and other weaponry.
Covid made the supply lines so backed up that we’re still waiting on parts ordered 2 years ago.
Domestic production of semiconductors isn’t slated to begin until 2025-26 and then these new manufacturing plants will need to go through a proofing period of 2 years prior to companies like Raytheon allowing their suppliers to begin running production units with these components.

Basically if it's WWIII the best advice I can give someone don't bother wasting your life fighting an unwinnable war as it's likely going to end in a nuclear war anyway. If you retired five years of your retirement date (honorable discharge), then you'd be classified as a Category I, which basically means that after going through the lottery system of civilians who haven't served, you'd get recalled. After 5 years, you're a Cat II, and hope that they don't start pulling from Cat III, which basically means any able bodied man.
