Ayreon is a project created by a Dutchman named Arjen. He will hire different musical guests for songs and albums. Most members full time job are in other bands. For example James Labrie from Dream Theater does vocals on certain songs from a couple of albums. Think of Aryeons music more like a play than an actual band. Each album could have as many as 10 guests. Even Bruce from Iron Maiden sang on one album.
Never heard of Aryeon before but I'm glad I know them now. I absolutely loved this. My only critique is that I wanted each solo to be longer. I loved all the different types of solos but felt like I was only getting a sample taste of each one and what I really wanted was the full meal. Tgats how much I liked them. Even Floor Jansen and her sister performed live in a side project called star one as backup singers. (this concert is also on youtube) when 19 and early 20s . The live concerts are a rare and almost mythical event , and sold out with out promotion . I might want to sugest the eye of ra of the ayreon universe concert to get an idea of how and what ayreon is.
Ayreon is not really a band as such but a name for Arjan Lucassen musical projects. When he is finished composing the music and writing his lyrics he gets all these amazing vocalist and musicians to create a one of a kind album. All of his albums tell a central story line and some of the albums are also connected. (It sounds a bit like Jeff Wayne's War of the worlds album. If you never heard that take a look at that to). His live performances are really rare and sold out in minutes. You can imagine how difficult it is getting all these successful artists on a stage at the same time. Dedicated fans of him will travel world to see it. Funny thing is that even though he loves creating these albums he has a very serious case of stage fright and is also very shy. FYI One of the planed Mars rovers is going to transmit a radio program from the planet. They also decided to include a song in the program and it was up to the public to decide which song would be included. They chose the song "My house on Mars". That is a Ayreon song and who is one of the vocalist on this song? Our beloved Floor Jansen. As far as i am concerned they could not have picked a better and more deserving vocalist to announce our presence to the universe could they? I would love to hear a collab between NW and Anneke. That would be awesome. Maybe Anneke on Tuomas's next side projects, something like 'The Life and Times of...'.
Mmm.. "My house on Mars" was sung on the album "The Universal Migrator 1&2" by Johan Edlund, Floor did the countervoice, as she did on many more albums. Check out "Condemned to live" and "Between the waves." Also, in the shows, Floor often comes in at the end of a song as a climax. Hear and see "Everybody dies"and "Star of Sirrah".
If you want to have a possible short circuit in your brain: Arjen - the man on bass, guitars and keyboards - wrote all the music, the lyrics and the concept story for the double album this song is the opening song for. And planned (and probably adjusted here and there along the way) for all the roles to be covered by all the different singers. There are 17 songs on the album where this song is the opening track, with an 88 minute play time. And the story and concept on the album ties in with stories he has explored on several of his previous albums.

The binary code spells out "Trust th1" That's the role mike mills sings on the album. And if you read the text in the opening you'd know that there's 11 main singers on the album. 😉
Ayreon uses many different vocalists. They usually play roles in the stories. All 11 of the singers are on this song. They all play roles on the whole record. In response to your "how is it profitable for you guys" question. As a fan of this group, we're kind of obsessed. Just to put it into perspective, this band is kind of niche even in its genre. Even so, a few years ago they did a live concert with as many of the guest musicians as they could. The show sold out in an hour, and demand was so high they had to book a second day. That one also sold out in an hour.

Good news for you: the eleven main singers continue to intertwine throughout the whole album. It's a great listen and well worth going through in its entirety!
First of all, welcome to the Ayreon universe. Ayreon is a musical project created by the Dutch multi-instrumentalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen in 1995. In every Ayreon album, Arjen composes a greater 95% of music and texts average and plays electric guitars, acoustic guitars, electric bass, synth and keyboards, and invites several guest vocalists to join him to play a part in his own metal operas. The Ayreon's album sequence is the following one: 1) in 1995 Arjen created the first Ayreon album "The Final Experiment", talking about the story of a blind ministrel of the 6th century britain, named Ayreon, who receives from the future visions of humanity decline and tries to sing about these visions to save the world from its own downfall. The prologue of this album is that in the year 2084 a.d. (chosen by adding 100 years to 1984 referring to George Orwell's most famous novel) mankind has virtually destroyed itself, it's survival depends on the final experiment. 2) Ayreon's second album "Actual Fantasy" (1996) is the only Ayreon album not being a concept album, but it is a group of song each of them narrating story related to science-fiction themes or fantasy themes 3) in 1998, "Into the Electric Castle" talked about eight different characters each of them taken by a different historical age of the earth, that are brought to another dimension and are given a quest by a mysterious alien presence, to go through this unknown land to find the electric castle and try to survive it to go back home. It is the first album to talk about the alien race named "forever", but this seems to be a completely different story from the first two albums 4) in 2000 "Universal Migrator" an album split in two different parts, each of the released as a unique album [pt1: the Dream Sequencer] and [pt2: flight of the migrator]. This is the first album to make clear that all the stories told by "The Final Experiment" and "Into the Electric Castle" are connected to create a bigger picture, a real "Ayreon Universe" 5) in 2004 "The Human Equation", that seems to be disconnected by the "Ayreon Universe" big picture, until the last 30 seconds of the last song, in which it is revealed that the story developed all through the album is a program run by the Forever race to try to solve "The Human Equation" in order to save us and them from the final catastrophe. 6) in 2008 there are two events: --> a) the album 01011001 (binary code for the letter "Y") is declared by Arjen to be the final chapter of the "Forever race saga" and reveals that the Forever alien race is the human race ancestor arrived from another planet after a global catastrophe and they are guiding our evolution from the dawn of human race until now to make us save them from their destiny --> b) the best of "Timeline" contains a poster describing how all the album related to the "Forever Saga" are connected and their own part in the "Ayreon Universe big picture", and contains also a new song "Epilogue: The Memory Remains" that is the final epilogue of the "Forever Saga" 7) in 2013 the album "The Theory of Everything" is the first Ayreon concept album completely disconnected by the "Forever Saga" telling about the research of a father and his son of the theory of everything 8) in 2017 with the album "The Source" Arjen returns to his beloved "Forever race" characters, telling us the prequel of the Forever Saga, explaining us where they lived, what was the extinguishing event they have to face, what caused that event, and how the Forever race faced it. 9) in 2020 with the title "Transitus" Arjen created a complete different story, set on earth in the 19th century, and being a tragic love story with dark and gothic vibe. This album was conceived to be a musical, so there are more songs each of them being shorter than an average Ayreon's song. In more than 25 years of Ayreon, they released only three live albums: The Theater Equation (a live performance of the album "The Human Equation"); Ayreon Universe (a live performance with a best of the songs created by Arjen for Ayreon and Star-One projects); Electric Castle Live and Other Tales (a live performance of the album "Into the Electric Castle" and a selection of 1 song for every Arjen's side project + the Marillion song "Kayleigh" performed by Fish, the original Marillion singer, that has played the "Highlander" part in the Arjen's metal opera). Each one of these live performances deserves to be considered a masterpiece in the music history. Arjen also released a lot of other music throughout the years, with many side-projects as "Ambeon", "Star One", "Guilt Machine", "Stream of Passion" , "The Gentle Storm" and his own solo albums. When he creates new music, he creates music, words, story and everything else and when he feels the real mood of what he's creating, he decides if the following creation will be an Ayreon album, another of his own existing side-projects, or a complete new side-project. Fun fact is that Floor Jansen has been a guest vocalist for Arjen since 2000 when she appeared on Universal Migrator. Since then she was a guest in Arjen's project in both the project Star One's albums and in the "01011001" Ayreon album. Thank you for the laughs. First thing, you might want to, and probably have, go(ne) back and watch the beginning of the video when Arjen says there are 11 Vocalists on this particular performance. I guess the best description of the Genre, is "Rock Opera". But Arjen is a bloody genius! And on top of that every time I listen to this, I want to start writing again... My problem is a lack of discipline. Oh, and don't sell yourself short, your brain works great!
You mentioned the sound engineering. In the next to last song on the album Arjen has all 11 singers doing the chorus together. But they’re all recorded individually. Yet, their vibratos are all in synch. Just... how?!?
Arjen Lucassen is master composer and projectleader of Ayreon. A lot of terrific and wellknown (fe)male artists participate in his music projects. For instance we do have a lot of awesome female metal frontwomen in the Netherlands; Anneke van Giersbergen, Simone Simons, Charlotte Wessels, Sharon den Adel, Dianne van Giersbergen, the sisters Floor and Irene Jansen, and so on. Most of them are working with Arjen, but they have also their own careers. Taking your happy reaction for this video in consideration, let us know what you have found more. There's a lot to unpack here... Ayreon is the brainchild of Arjen Anthony Lucassen (the guy playing synths, guitar and bass). All of the albums from his Ayreon project tell a story within the same universe. Arjen is famous for collabing with other talented people from the prog/metal/rock sphere. He roughly composes the entire album and then 'casts' the vocalists he want to play the different roles on the album (each of the 11 vocalists in the song, and on the album have a part they play in the story). At this point, Arjen's reputation as an artist is so strong that nobody turns him down when he asks someone to be on an album, if they aren't busy. His discography at this point in time is huge. He's incredibly friendly and loves when people react to his stuff. So if you do run into trouble with the video, reach out to him! In the past, he has helped some amazingly talented people get started in the music industry, by featuring them on his albums. He has even started bands up for (at least one of) them. 🙂 i recommend you listen to the entirety of the album this song is from, if you want more. It is a one of his greatest albums.

The red guitar player is the mastermind. Arien Anthony Lucassen. All the singers are guests. Most of them are lead singers from well known metal bands. They gladly participate in this genius's projects for free most of the time.
How many people in the band? in fact just 1 :D Ayreon is a "project" rather than a Band. Arjen Lucassen is the mind behind Ayreon project. Wher he compose a new album/opera calls a lot of musicians, mainly singers, because he writes rock operas with different characters played by different singers (11 different singers in this album). He, by himself, plays guitar, bass and keyboards. Usually on drums there is Ed Warby, one of his long time friends, and then many singers invited from various other metal bands, plus additional musicians like the ones for flutes, violin e cello.

As previously written, Arjen has a hue stage fright and will not go on a stage. Maybe at the very end of a live show he will join the rest of the singers. But that is all what he does

Nice catch btw, most people miss that Arjen Anthony Lucassen is playing guitar, bass and synths. He didn't get the binary code from a scary movie. The code means 'trust in TH-1', TH-1 is the computer played by Micheal Mills.

This is a "metal opera" if you will. Arjen, the guy playing the guitar, bass and synth, is a Dutch artist. He has been pulling together the best metal singers and musicians from around the world to perform in his works. Besides Floor, you saw Hansi from Blind Guardian and Simone from Epica among the many other singers. Marco from Nightwish has also performed with Ayreon. There is some amazing music in the Ayreon universe.

Mmm.. "My house on Mars" was sung on the album "The Universal Migrator 1&2" by Johan Edlund, Floor did the countervoice, as she did on many more albums. If you want to have a possible short circuit in your brain: Arjen - the man on bass, guitars and keyboards - wrote all the music, the lyrics and the concept story for the double album this song is the opening song for. And planned (and probably adjusted here and there along the way) for all the roles to be covered by all the different singers. There are 17 songs on the album where this song is the opening track, with an 88 minute play time. And the story and concept on the album ties in with stories he has explored on several of his previous albums.

In response to your "how is it profitable for you guys" question. As a fan of this group, we're kind of obsessed. Just to put it into perspective, this band is kind of niche even in its genre. Even so, a few years ago they did a live concert with as many of the guest musicians as they could. The show sold out in an hour, and demand was so high they had to book a second day. That one also sold out in an hour.
I would like you to check out more Ayreon. This is a prog-rock project by dutch composer, and multi-instrumentalist Arjen Lucassen. This video was literally made for me I’m a k-pop fan and ayreon is my favorite band.
First of all, welcome to the Ayreon universe. Ayreon is a musical project created by the Dutch multi-instrumentalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen in 1995.
In every Ayreon album, Arjen composes a greater 95% of music and texts average and plays electric guitars, acoustic guitars, electric bass, synth and keyboards, and invites several guest vocalists to join him to play a part in his own metal operas.
The Ayreon's album sequence is the following one:
1) in 1995 Arjen created the first Ayreon album "The Final Experiment", talking about the story of a blind ministrel of the 6th century britain, named Ayreon, who receives from the future visions of humanity decline and tries to sing about these visions to save the world from its own downfall. The prologue of this album is that in the year 2084 a.d. (chosen by adding 100 years to 1984 referring to George Orwell's most famous novel) mankind has virtually destroyed itself, it's survival depends on the final experiment.
2) Ayreon's second album "Actual Fantasy" (1996) is the only Ayreon album not being a concept album, but it is a group of song each of them narrating story related to science-fiction themes or fantasy themes
3) in 1998, "Into the Electric Castle" talked about eight different characters each of them taken by a different historical age of the earth, that are brought to another dimension and are given a quest by a mysterious alien presence, to go through this unknown land to find the electric castle and try to survive it to go back home. It is the first album to talk about the alien race named "forever", but this seems to be a completely different story from the first two albums
4) in 2000 "Universal Migrator" an album split in two different parts, each of the released as a unique album [pt1: the Dream Sequencer] and [pt2: flight of the migrator]. This is the first album to make clear that all the stories told by "The Final Experiment" and "Into the Electric Castle" are connected to create a bigger picture, a real "Ayreon Universe"
5) in 2004 "The Human Equation", that seems to be disconnected by the "Ayreon Universe" big picture, until the last 30 seconds of the last song, in which it is revealed that the story developed all through the album is a program run by the Forever race to try to solve "The Human Equation" in order to save us and them from the final catastrophe.
6) in 2008 there are two events:
--> a) the album 01011001 (binary code for the letter "Y") is declared by Arjen to be the final chapter of the "Forever race saga" and reveals that the Forever alien race is the human race ancestor arrived from another planet after a global catastrophe and they are guiding our evolution from the dawn of human race until now to make us save them from their destiny
--> b) the best of "Timeline" contains a poster describing how all the album related to the "Forever Saga" are connected and their own part in the "Ayreon Universe big picture", and contains also a new song "Epilogue: The Memory Remains" that is the final epilogue of the "Forever Saga"
7) in 2013 the album "The Theory of Everything" is the first Ayreon concept album completely disconnected by the "Forever Saga" telling about the research of a father and his son of the theory of everything
8) in 2017 with the album "The Source" Arjen returns to his beloved "Forever race" characters, telling us the prequel of the Forever Saga, explaining us where they lived, what was the extinguishing event they have to face, what caused that event, and how the Forever race faced it.
9) in 2020 with the title "Transitus" Arjen created a complete different story, set on earth in the 19th century, and being a tragic love story with dark and gothic vibe. This album was conceived to be a musical, so there are more songs each of them being shorter than an average Ayreon's song.
In more than 25 years of Ayreon, they released only three live albums: The Theater Equation (a live performance of the album "The Human Equation"); Ayreon Universe (a live performance with a best of the songs created by Arjen for Ayreon and Star-One projects); Electric Castle Live and Other Tales (a live performance of the album "Into the Electric Castle" and a selection of 1 song for every Arjen's side project + the Marillion song "Kayleigh" performed by Fish, the original Marillion singer, that has played the "Highlander" part in the Arjen's metal opera). Each one of these live performances deserves to be considered a masterpiece in the music history.
Arjen also released a lot of other music throughout the years, with many side-projects as "Ambeon", "Star One", "Guilt Machine", "Stream of Passion" , "The Gentle Storm" and his own solo albums. When he creates new music, he creates music, words, story and everything else and when he feels the real mood of what he's creating, he decides if the following creation will be an Ayreon album, another of his own existing side-projects, or a complete new side-project.
Fun fact is that Floor Jansen has been a guest vocalist for Arjen since 2000 when she appeared on Universal Migrator. Since then she was a guest in Arjen's project in both the project Star One's albums and in the "01011001" Ayreon album.

I guess the best description of the Genre, is "Rock Opera". But Arjen is a bloody genius! And on top of that every time I listen to this, I want to start writing again... There's a lot to unpack here... Ayreon is the brainchild of Arjen Anthony Lucassen (the guy playing synths, guitar and bass). All of the albums from his Ayreon project tell a story within the same universe. Arjen is famous for collabing with other talented people from the prog/metal/rock sphere. He roughly composes the entire album and then 'casts' the vocalists he want to play the different roles on the album (each of the 11 vocalists in the song, and on the album have a part they play in the story). At this point, Arjen's reputation as an artist is so strong that nobody turns him down when he asks someone to be on an album, if they aren't busy. His discography at this point in time is huge. He's incredibly friendly and loves when people react to his stuff. So if you do run into trouble with the video, reach out to him!
In the past, he has helped some amazingly talented people get started in the music industry, by featuring them on his albums. He has even started bands up for (at least one of) them. 🙂 i recommend you listen to the entirety of the album this song is from, if you want more. It is a one of his greatest albums.

Ayreon is a "project" rather than a Band. Arjen Lucassen is the mind behind Ayreon project. Wher he compose a new album/opera calls a lot of musicians, mainly singers, because he writes rock operas with different characters played by different singers (11 different singers in this album). He, by himself, plays guitar, bass and keyboards. Usually on drums there is Ed Warby, one of his long time friends, and then many singers invited from various other metal bands, plus additional musicians like the ones for flutes, violin e cello.

This is a "metal opera" if you will. Arjen, the guy playing the guitar, bass and synth, is a Dutch artist. He has been pulling together the best metal singers and musicians from around the world to perform in his works. Besides Floor, you saw Hansi from Blind Guardian and Simone from Epica among the many other singers. Marco from Nightwish has also performed with Ayreon. There is some amazing music in the Ayreon universe.
