In a world run by monarchs, the United States announced an unprecedented democratic experiment whose success was far from guaranteed. What does it take to write a document like the Declaration of Independence in a time of challenging uncertainty? What can we learn from it 250 years later?
Political scientist Danielle Allen explores the bold minds and historical circumstances that resulted in one of the greatest political writings in history.

The winners write the history, and the truth is lost to conformity.

Many leaders of the French Revolution admired the Declaration of Independence but were also interested in the new American state constitutions. The inspiration and content of the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen emerged largely from the ideals of the American Revolution. Lafayette prepared its key drafts, working closely in Paris with his friend Thomas Jefferson. It also borrowed language from George Mason's Virginia Declaration of Rights. The declaration also influenced the Russian Empire, and it had a particular impact on the Decembrist revolt and othe Russian thinkers.
