Long time viewer, first time (finally) commenter, you'd think even a transplanted Welshman like me would've gotten to these four sooner but I'm just now catching up to them all. 🏴 Just Dael's onscreen characterization for Ysbaddaden alone is why she deserves every bit of success she's accrued with this gig over the past decade. You rock Dael, keep 'em coming!
I feel like some ancient Welshperson literally just wrote down this vivid, extended dream that they had, and that is why this legend is the way it is. Also, that person was feeling that they really needed a haircut.
My mother (who's like a proper scholarly medievalist academic expert person) always says that half the reason Monty Python and the Holy Grail is hilarious is because it seems like it's exaggerating but it isn't, that's just what the stories are like.
So many parallels to monty python in this. Remember the scene when one Arthur's knights was running up to a castle and running up to a castle and running up to a castle the same way the knights in this story kept walking and never getting any closer to the castle and then suddenly they're at the gates and kill the guards.
Loved your retellings Dael, have you done a video containing the final parts of the tale? The episode of the very very black witch daughter of the very very white witch is darkly hilarious. You might like to visit my blog Mabinogion Astronomy which offers some surprising interpretations of these wonderful tales. Thank you for posting, great job!
Thank you for a most entertaining series and drawing attention to Kay. I hope you will attempt more mythology someday! You may or may not be interested, but Forvo says Culhwch should be pronounced Keel-hook which sounds like a demented fishing tool and also has an an odd little cough in the middle.
Sneaks into a castle after killing all the Guards, throws poison darts at the king(admittedly not their fault) to see what happens, goes on an obscure series of side-quests involving more killings to collect random items... is this Skyrim?
So a guy with a solid plan manages to come inside the castle, basically almost completes the task all by himself but then all the others still decide to sneak past the gate and suddenly they start killing everyone, steal all the treasures and take the head of giant-king for some reason. Yeah, that's a D&D party for sure.
Wondering if you've seen the BBC series based on the book of the same name call "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell". The Magic and Fae aspects are wonderfully done, and the story is great. The magic and Fae seem so Other in the show, and they even use that shape-shifting log you mentioned in the Jamie Freel story.
The book is one of my all time favourites, I try to convince others to read it any opportunity I get - it's depiction of magic as the super natural in the sense of being the MOST natural is superb and the way it builds? Flawless. Genius. Love it. I've only seen half of the adaptation, though, something got in the way, though I can't remember what...
Just remembered there is a series from SyFy call "The Magicians" that has a magic system I enjoy just as much as Strange and Norrell, for similar surreal reasons.
Oh my God, it is still not finished?!!! I swear, this story will give me the weirdest nightmares ever... o__O BTW, cool elven dagger you got there Kingsmill! ; )
I am reading the Mabinogion myself; It seems they are stone darts or spears that Ysbaddaden throws, yet he complains that it is the iron which poisons and pains him. As the Explanatory Notes suggest he is a giant, I theorise that it is that infamous magical allergy to Iron suffered by supernatural creatures in europeen myth and folklore which we are here seeing at play. It makes sense that he would grip a stone pole so that his skin come not into contact with the iron - with weapons of this nature so suddenly at hand oddly suggesting Ysbaddaden frequently fights other magical creatures. Any takers?
So I found you through Critical Role and now I am so confused, I could swear I have seen you somewhere before but I have no idea where I would have ever before. Love the videos but it's never going to stop bugging me.
Haha, welcome! It's very possible you've seen me haunting other corners of G&S, I was one of the Geek & Sundry Vloggers with the likes of Amy Dallen (I was voted in with the expansion pack covering mythology) and I've done a couple of guest videos here and there for the main channel as well, as extended family of the company. OR some people watch me for several months and then suddenly shout "KEIRA KNIGHTLY" or "NATALIE PORTMAN" at me over social media, so that's a possibility as well. :)
This is a weird myth. I kind of have to wonder whether these random quests were once all seperate local legends and folklore that were all collected and put together into one semi-coherent story.
I actually had this exact conversation with my sister before recording - I think it's likely that different storytellers told different versions and little bits and pieces of quest legends that existed on their own without an overarching plot, and that when the story was being translated and recorded it was all collected together in a way it might not have been previously. It might account for how you can have 8 pages of snippets rather than just a handful that make sense.
Yeah, but this is totally a story and not a fancy moving picture! How often has Hollywood changed our beloved stories to fit their stylization? O_o I am not familiar with Welsh stories, were they originally created from an oratory tradition or were they originally written down? I SUPPOSE you can brake it up to as many parts as you want as it is your retelling of the tale, after all? Hell, the Lord of the Rings was originally meant to be one book and was only turned into a trilogy because of the cost of publishing a book that huge was more than the publisher wanted to spend.
Why are they so concerned about these poisoned darts? Aspithan keeps getting hit by them and they don't do anything. Also, Arthur and his knights on a series of quests and nobody fetches a shrubbery? Very disappointing.
I think Yspaddaden might be a giant? Which could explain the disparity? But also, it hasn't been directly stated in the story far as I've seen, so I've not mentioned it here.
I always think of Australia as very hot, so the fact that you have that much clothes confuses me :P I feel like more than a tank top and some shorts it too much
I was half expecting this to happen:
"Oh you're a craftsman eh? What's your craft then?"
"I make poison darts for the King down the road."
Long time viewer, first time (finally) commenter, you'd think even a transplanted Welshman like me would've gotten to these four sooner but I'm just now catching up to them all. 🏴

I've loved this story for a while, this is a great rendition. Especially love Arthur's mean song
This is like a Monty Python movie, it's incredible. Your characters are just perfect.
My mother (who's like a proper scholarly medievalist academic expert person) always says that half the reason Monty Python and the Holy Grail is hilarious is because it seems like it's exaggerating but it isn't, that's just what the stories are like.
Haha i can definitely see that now!
Gabriel: I agree and “Monty Python” was the first thing that came to my mind watching Dael’s narration and performances.
So many parallels to monty python in this. Remember the scene when one Arthur's knights was running up to a castle and running up to a castle and running up to a castle the same way the knights in this story kept walking and never getting any closer to the castle and then suddenly they're at the gates and kill the guards.
So this story is basically a video game with all the complicated side quests and million parts of the main quest.
It's giving me flashbacks to my Runescape days...
I have not played Runescape, but the story reminds me of Skyrim. Maybe Jangle Rodentbane's adventures will turn into a story like this in the future.
OMG YES!
I just adore you Ysabadden imitations < 3 i am obsessed they pop up in my head occasionally and I have to return to this video like now XD
These are really making me want to do similar videos with Irish mythology.
pleeeeease do
This party is a DMs nightmare. Murder hobos. You set up a whole campaign, and they just kill everything.
It's like a scary campfire story for DMs...
“Pages I’m going to need you to lift my eyebrows so I can make eye contact. Ok, here we go and HA!” 😂😂😂

I love these videos, so much! I don't think I've laughed so hard at a video about mythology in so long! Thank you so much, Dael!
Your acting of the old bushy brow King was so funny! Thank you for that. You should really try to do more of that in future videos XD
Thank you for a most entertaining series and drawing attention to Kay. I hope you will attempt more mythology someday!

We definitely can't prove that it isn't!
This story is so insane I love it.
Good god, Welsh mythology guys... absolutely bloody insane
This thing just keeps expanding and expanding. Proper saga!
I love these. The Giant Salmon part had me laughing while at work.
If Culhwch would’ve just maxed out his Speech skill, he wouldn’t have needed to do all these tasks Ysbaddaden wanted.
This is someone's D&D adventures put in print... lol! I love this series!
So a guy with a solid plan manages to come inside the castle, basically almost completes the task all by himself but then all the others still decide to sneak past the gate and suddenly they start killing everyone, steal all the treasures and take the head of giant-king for some reason. Yea I mention this in a old irish one she did If she has not seen it I think she will find it a blast.
The book is one of my all time favourites, I try to convince others to read it any opportunity I get - it's depiction of magic as the super natural in the sense of being the MOST natural is superb and the way it builds? Yea they are based on books by lev grossman, well worth a read.
I love all of your mythology videos! thanks for taking the time can't wait for part 4!
Do you think that you could retell the story of Snow White and Rose Red or the tale of Sir Gwaine and the loathly lady?
Thank you for making this video! Extremely helpful for my final.
Loving this myth!
Oh my God, it is still not finished?!!! I swear, this story will give me the weirdest nightmares ever... o__O
BTW, cool elven dagger you got there Kingsmill! ; )
Thanks, that one's my brother's (wanted one with a sheath, all mine a bare)!
You have the coolest toys. :D

The eyebrows and the darts 😂😂😂
2 in one day Yay :)
hey Dael good to see you
Kai, the Original Scanlan Shorthalt.
Loving all your badges by the way
Thank you! And it's refreshing to hear them called 'badges', I'm so used to translating it into 'pins' for my USAmerican friends in conversation.
Please more crazy! I couldn't stop laughing.
"The A team!"
You have outdone yourself.
:D Thanks for saying so, I was really pleased with this one, actually.
You should be pleased. With all the other ones, too, of course.
I'm starting to think that you should do the whole Mabinogion. All four books. From start to finish.
At 9:50 is that Aragorn's dagger?
Yep indeedy! Good eye. It's my brother's, although I have the white knives of Legolas hanging on my wall. The nerd runs deep in my family.
Injyst love to here you tel me storys from the bast :)
Is it really a good idea for you to be wielding that knife around Dael?
Wait, why would critters have joined? What did I miss? I've been out of the CR-loop for a little while
Dael posted a song about CR a week or so ago
Oh, right! Comepletely forgot about that, for some reason.
So I found you through Critical Role and now I am so confused, I could swear I have seen you somewhere before but I have no idea where I would have ever before. Love the videos but it's never going to stop bugging me.

Nice hat! Oh, a part four you say? Here I thought the tradition was to break a story into a trilogy?
Ahh, but the current film trend is to split the last instalment of a trilogy into two parts!
Yeah, but this is totally a story and not a fancy moving picture! How often has Hollywood changed our beloved stories to fit their stylization? the wink tho
Wanted to know where my name originated from. This is wild but incredibly interesting 😂
Does the never ending fetch quest thing remind any one else of darksiders 2.
Why are they so concerned about these poisoned darts? Aspithan keeps getting hit by them and they don't do anything.

Tag yourself, I'm the eagle.
cool hat
Half-Arthurian... Halfthurian?
holy crap this is getting even weirder.
I always think of Australia as very hot, so the fact that you have that much clothes confuses me :P I feel like more than a tank top and some shorts it too much
But it's Winter and I'm cold and I miss the sunlight!
How cold does it get?
...this story is bat guano insane.
As a half-orcen rogue, I am offended by being greeted with "hello humans"
Are you doing "asian eyes?"
