Cheap, cheerful and not very sharp - just like me! I appreciate your views on less expensive knives. I really like the custom, handmade works of art (like you make), but when I go into the woods I go with a Mora and a folding saw. We have been together so long that I manage to do everything I need/want to do just fine. But I sure like to look at all the other very nice knives available on the market. A guy can dream, can't he?

I love how functional and tough a lot of these Hultafors knives are. I’ve not tried this Craftsman but I have the OK4 that has the same grippy rubberised handle. That and the Mora Pro Robust are my go to knives when I take my kids wild camping. Capable enough to do everything we need and yet cheap enough to be as rough as you like with them and not cry if you misplace one. We were even using mine to dig up fossils and bits of old pottery the kids found in the woods we were camping in a few weeks ago. Took about 5 minutes on an oil stone & a strop to get it back to slicing newspaper. GK Heavy Duty is a very good cheap option, same blade as the OK4 but without the (needless) black coating and a simpler solid plastic handle. I picked one up for about £7, I’m pretty sure that it has a picture on the packet of someone batoning with it…using a steel claw hammer! - Gives you an idea of how unbreakable they really are.
The Mora pro robust is an awesome knife
Hultafors Steel is legendary! I have a 50+ YO axe from hultafors, the handle have been replaced 3 times, In my ownership, But the blade is still as new.
Nice review Rob..I had an OK4 which was excellent. I’ve had one of those sharpeners for over 25 years too and they’re superb.
I like the Hultafors as much as the Mora knives and some models, even better. Thanks for sharing Rob

Great stuff. Had one of these for five years. It is very easy in the hand and a great shape. I particularly love the handle. The blade is fine except for one problem.
I write this as a farmer who uses his blades a lot and does not abuse them. Despite this I have to say, whilst it looks good in the video, it rusts like b*ggery. This happens no matter how much your oil it or wrap it in cotton wool etc.
You are far better off getting the Hultafors plumber. This is made of stainless steel and it pretty much the same blade shape although the handle is not quite to hand-friendly (although still pretty good and the right length and is still comfortable in the hand).
It is my favourite knife of the many many that I have.
But oh yes,... you've guessed it: The moment something become one of my favourites, they stop producing it.
The KJ Ericsson mora predecessor to the Mora 511 is a favourite of mine , just under 3mm thick blade sadly that's no longer made either.
I'm going to order a few more "affordable" knives to see which I like best.
@@theplayer2286 Read your comment, as you are not using your knife for food preparation can I suggest that you apply a thick coating of Vaseline to the blade. This will stop oxygen getting to the blade, especially in damp , wet conditions. Hope this works for you.

Hi Rob. Excellent and honest review as always. Speaking from my personal experience I would say that when I started out, having something like, for example, a Woodlore, was a huge psychological crutch. But now twenty something years down the road, I find the knife really doesn't matter as much as having the skills in your arsenal to be able to use it correctly and sensibly. All the best mate.

I have the hultafors ok4 i really like it. It was cheaper then a mora and it has a much better sheath. I can't see how anyone needing a cheap outdoor knife could go wrong!
On the wrapping the ok4 says it is to be used for batoning.

Excellent video, really good honest information. I have some nice custom knives, but cannot fault the cheaper alternatives, the Mora Robust Pro gets my vote, especially with a sharpened spine.

Great video! You have made me think diffrent about knives, and to be honest id take this one with an axe, over any overhyped 6mm survival knife meant to survive the dinasours coming back! Its just makes sense, right tool, right job.

In my opinion they are much better than the Mora 12C27n blades. I find that Mora makes their main bevels to small amd the steel is very soft. Their carbon is much better though and comparable to the Hultifors blades.
I used to use their Green handle HD blades back when I was learning how to sharpen. I made a ton of wood handled homemade knives for friends with those Sk5 blanks.
Excellent knives.
2.5 MM is perfect for wood carving/crafting.

Yes , I did a few videos on the robust , definitely the best budget knife out there.
I bought the hultafors OK4 to give it a try and can’t fault it for the money to be honest. Great honest review as usual Rob. Looking forward to getting one of your Mors mk 1 to try. 👍

Hello Rob. I do appreciate your honesty and frankness. I happen to own one of your Mk 1s, a couple of Moras and whole bunch in between. The quality, craftsmanship, attention to detail not to mention my pride in ownership in your knife is unsurpassed. Will they all perform there basic tasks? Absolutely!!! But there are none that garner more respect, admiration and appreciation than yours.

My very first bushcraft knife many many years ago was a Hultafors heavy duty carbon.
It's sat in the kitchen odds and ends drawer and still used for all sorts....worn and sharpened to an unusual shape.

Hi Rob,
I have knives all the way from bottom line Moras up to Bark River and Reiff (that's about as pricey as my budget allows). I do have one of the green Hultafors (the GK heavy duty). That knife isn't a full tang but it's made to be beat on. I think it may be the toughest knife I have. Wouldn't dare do to my Moras what I would do to that Hultafors. They are TOUGH and have a 3mm thickness. The only downside is that they will definitely rust easily and the sheath won't accommodate a larger belt (paracord loops fix that). I may try to blacken the blade and see if that helps. The handle is laughably huge, but very functional.
I'd be curious to see you compare the two.

The mora equivalent is so much better.
Apple cider vinegar work's pretty good, I've had one for years and have never had it rust.👍🏻

@@RobEvansWoodsman yes, I don't do it on all blades in fact I never do it anymore but I did do it on the heavy duty hultafors about 12 years ago, it did certainly help with rust.

I liked the folding DMT sharpening tool ; was it expensive ? Thanks for the video ; I appreciate you using a knife as "a knife" . Silly destruction tests are irritating for me at least !
It depends where you are, they are probably cheaper in the USA than Europe.

Hultafors are generally cheaper than their equivalent Mora models. Can’t really speak for the quality of their steel but they’re solid little knives for sure

Nice, Rob. I haven’t tried the Hultafors but looks like a nice inexpensive option. Hey, this is off topic a bit, but is the Mora 911 still available in your neck of the woods? I’ve heard it might still be produced by Morakniv and sold overseas but it is no longer available here in the states. When the Bushcraft Black was released, they said good-bye to selling the 911 in the USA.
We can get the 511 and 510 but 911 isn't a knife I'm familiar with, Bill wouldn't like them, no full tang
