I'm actually happy to see the video signal so shitty. I was afraid my gear was crap when I flew behind a single apartment building and the video got super scratchy lol
so I fly the exact same taranis setup you do (hardware wise anyway, even with the crossfire setup). I live in the suburbs of san diego and the complex I'm in is HEAVILY saturated with 802.11. 5.8ghz video gets a bit scratchy when I get like 50 yards away even, I haven't tried to push the 2.4ghz link since I basically moved everything over to the crossfire systems. While on that topic - do you have any thoughts on antenna protectors for those crossfire micros? 2-3 crashes and they get completely shredded.
I ghetto'ed that - i used gaff tape instead of heatshrink - had the ziptie sticking straight up. 2 crashes and it got chewed to hell. Also, vortex, collapsing arms, so when they fold in during a crash they sort of .. eat .. stuff.
+Mr Steele, nice test vid. It will be interesting to see if the Frsky Horus does as well as the Jeti D16. For heaven sakes what are rates set at? Hardly any stick movement for forward pitch...
And in rate mode or Acro mode you don't need to hold forward on the pitch stick. Once you are flying forward you can just go back to center stick and adjust accordingly. Rates aren't super high
+Mr Steele that may sound noobish but why centering the pitch doesn't set the quad on the horizon ? If you push the pitch half way forward , let's say it set a 40deg angle to the quad, and then you pitch back to a quarter forward. Will the quad still have an 40deg angle or will it be at 20deg. (If linear of course) ? Great videos, keep up the good job !
You're getting self leveling mode mixed up with "acro" also more accurately called "rate mode". In the self leveling mode, the deflection of the sticks for roll and pitch actually cause a given movement about that axis that is proportional to the stick deflection. To keep a 40 degree angle, it would require that you hold the pitch stick in a given forward position. Half lets say. In "acro" or "rate" mode, it works just like an airplane does. Stick deflection causes the rate of movement on the given axis to speed up with more stick deflection. When you hit the pitch, roll, or yaw target, neutralizing the controls leaves the aircraft attitude unchanged. To get your quads attitude back to neutral, you have to move the controls in the opposite direction, which will control the rate at which the quad comes back to neutral. It's just like in an an airplane. To turn, you exert pressure on the stick in the roll direction, and when you reach the desired angle of bank, you go back to neutral. When you don't want the aircraft rolled anymore, you do the same thing in the opposite direction to roll it back to straight and level. Then neutralize the controls. It's very intuitive. In a quad, it can get tricky because of the lack of stability compared to a plane, and learning it a sim, is great. Once you get used to it, you won't use self leveling mode again.
Hey Mr steele just curious i was looking at your taranis an noticed the black an red dipole antenna on back could u give me a lil info about it an what it's for almost looks like a module of same kind I'm guessing an why did u choose that setup..... thanks! an ps about your long range 6in alien setup I seen on your website could you get me some info on that as well looking to build one myself!!!
Is there a hobby shop in the Atlanta area that will let you check out the FatShark goggles in the store with video to see how they work. I have a vision issue with one eye and with my GearVR goggles I don't get an image as clear as I'd like. Before I spend that kind of money I'd like to know they work. I've also looked at the Quanum V2 Pro. I want to do FPV with the quad I'm building after I get comfortable with it. I don't know if goggle will work for me or a fpv screen on my radio. Any suggestions?
I noticed you have a couple antenna whips poking out from the sides on your Taranis, is that a mod, could it affect the results possibly, TIA. Cool video.
What do you think of the Jeti programming compared to the Taranis? I have a Taranis for FPV only and it's very confusing to program in my opinion. I know Futaba like the back of my hand and JR and Spektrum I can manage. But Taranis for me is just a different language.
Hey Kyle ! Love your flying. Hope to get to chill with you one day soon. Jeti programming is pretty intuitive. More so than futaba and spektrum for a newbie with some rudimentary understanding of logic. I spent 2-3 hours with the radio one night and was setting up logical switches for special throttle cuts and telemetry call out switches by the end of it. I started on Spektrum with CP heli's wasn't a fan of the logic or the signal quality at the time. Early 2014. I've programmed futaba and JR. The taranis is by far the quirkiest firmware I have used. But it does things easily that other radios require a work around. Or quite simply can't do. (Some switch set ups and or module bay serial output etc.). Mainly I keep it simple though radio is just used to set up arm and idle up switches and subtrims and end points.. That's all I need. Cheers
+Mr Steele Thanks man! I guess we have a similar setup Taranis wise! The features are cool and impressive, old school always works though :) Would love to fly with you some time! Let's work on that :)
Mr Steel hi im in need of a bite advice please i just got my fist race quad the nighthawk 280 pro and i was going to use my FUTABA RIPMAX T6EXA but it has the old telescopic aerial will i have to change it to a 2.4 antenna and will this connect to the nighthawk ok steel
+FPV Fred its tape, my guess would be to make it a bit stickier so that he knows he is in the top throttle range, but i cant be sure... he might just be getting all indie haha :D
+Jason Faulks +FPV Fred +Howler FPV he said in a periscope or an instagram post (I forget) I watched its just for looks. No functionality to it. Its just a piece of copper tape I believe.
+Buddha Pudge ...thanks man, I was beginning to think it was a super secret radio mod that instantly makes you better at throttle control!! lol, especially from Mr. Steele's lack of response!
great vid....helll all your vids are awesome.....are you running a crossfire on your tarantis???? i see the horizontal antenna at the end of the vid. thanks again for all the great info and vids ! !! ! !
I'm thinking of buying a Taranis to fly helis. From your video it seems so, but would you say it has a reliable radio signal? Have you experienced any loss of signal when flying close to big cellular antennas?
Mr Steel would you do a challenge? on top of parking building, drop off the wall the drone and as soon as reached the entrance...full power and get in as a lightning? risky but pure adrenaline regards green wing
It's a link comparison not a radio quality comparison. The quality of the jeti is in a different league. Comparing the two is like comparing a 2016 BMW M3 to a 1997 toyota Corolla. They both get you to the same location. But which one would you rather drive ... And price reflects that as well.
i was wondering if you have had any issues with a hum coming through the speaker of your taranis, i just received mine in the mail and even with all my pre purchase research i didnt kow about this till i powered mine on..and if so how did you take care of this problem. thanks
hi could you guide me a bit like you have jeti connector to the fc and that receiver configuration because I have been trying to use my jeti dc 24 in the world of drones but I can not configure the exbus of the receivers would be very helpful. Thank you
Interesting still dont fully understand what your are doing but interesting (are you looking for any control lags in longer distances and video link?) Happy New Year
+Mr Steele Have you tried the S.Bus firmware it works great fore me and also in Device explorer, General Settings I select Computed for fail-safe to work.
Wasn't really suppose to be a comparison video. Merely a test to show the penetrating power of both rc links. Frsky has proved it can penetrate objects and perform in a wifi saturated area before. I wanted to test the Jeti's link against something I know works really well for FPV models. Since jeti is mainly based around high end LOS models
I fly a Taranis with a dx4 in the city in China and have had zero issues...even near the bullet train stations ( only place there is good open space) and those environments must be crazy saturated!!! The trains are electric with tons of high voltage cables every where over head...
Thanks for another great video man. Have you noticed that you get a better range from your Taranis with a full charge. I've not tested that as scientifically as you do here but it seemed the case to me. Might be worth a look. I really like your videos and particularly those that aren't all flying , like this one cheers.
As far as quality goes. I think so for sure. The range is about the same as of right now. And honestly I don't think the Taranis abides by all the FCC rules
+Mr Steele What makes you think they don't abide by the rules? The gear is all FCC certified--for example: apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=0H5q4Euu5NroDqLMUk4gOQ%3D%3D&fcc_id=XYFX91216DK
100mW is 100mW. The performance of this Rx link is very very robust and solid. I'm not saying they are. I'm saying they may have some tricks up their sleeve to get the link quality so high
Looking at how much range he got using 600mw. The video RXs were really bad back in the day. Today you can get almost a mile with just 25mw. Wow, just wow.
so i got this idea from a facebook post of a guy wanting to shoot drones...i think it would be very entertaining to watch a skilled shooter trying to shoot down a racer in a closed range setting. (honestly i dont think many people could hit those things without some luck, and i would think it should be a sponsored event, i mean who is gonna let someone shoot at their personal racer! lol)
+Matthew Givens kindof an extreme idea which might end up not being nearly as much entertainment as id hoped. *shrugs* it looks cool i n my head anyway lol im an army vet (also a pretty decent marksmen{no not all soldiers are... ya i know}) and i highly doubt i could hit one with anything less than a shotgun

Nice flying tho! Love the videos when I can see the sticks
very-very nice
I'm actually happy to see the video signal so shitty. I was afraid my gear was crap when I flew behind a single apartment building and the video got super scratchy lol
What did you ever do with that jeti tx? Never had it in any other videos I have watched
This guy just has so much skill!!! I love his flying!!!! Listen to that sucker echo threw the woods i love it.
Im honestly just impressed with how much shit you're carrying while filming at the same time.
Lol. I have many hands !!
awsome curiouse what mw on vtx was it a 600?

I just heat shrink the antenna to a zip tie and attach it to the rear standoff. Never have an issue.

I guess we have a similar setup Taranis wise! The features are cool and impressive, old school always works though :)
Would love to fly with you some time! Let's work on that :)
Damn Steel that's a nice TX! How do you like it? Couldn't believe it when I saw the price. is it better than the Taranis? by how much?
Mr Steel hi im in need of a bite advice please i just got my fist race quad the nighthawk 280 pro and i was going to use my FUTABA RIPMAX T6EXA but it has the old telescopic aerial will i have to change it to a 2.4 antenna and will this connect to the nighthawk ok steel
+MrSteele what do you have for a fanci golden tape on the FatSharks at the Rx?
It's special tapezzz
hey man man how is jeti going lately? the urge to hit my taranis gimbles with a hammer is getting stronger by the day...
Damn dude I told you I'd dip a shell for you! Where'd you get that one from? It looks like you could use a new one already.
+Mr Steele What did you do to your taranis antenna??
Do you connect the udi the same way you would connect sbus to the naze ?
What is that on the top part of your throttle gimbal on your Taranis?
+Jason Faulks the copper bit right? I wanna know too...
+FPV Fred its tape, my guess would be to make it a bit stickier so that he knows he is in the top throttle range, but i cant be sure... he might just be getting all indie haha :D

What does antenna 1 mean and all that jazz?
I think this video really shows your great skills man. And I am impressed on how bad videosignal you are flying at, I would turn around half way.
Hha thanks man. I try to keep it real :)
great vid....helll all your vids are awesome.....are you running a crossfire on your tarantis???? i see the horizontal antenna at the end of the vid. thanks again for all the great info and vids ! !! ! !
I enjoyed the look around the neighborhood.... even if it was upsidedownandsideways...... always a good watch.
I'm thinking of buying a Taranis to fly helis. From your video it seems so, but would you say it has a reliable radio signal? Have you experienced any loss of signal when flying close to big cellular antennas?
Are you running the TBS Crossfire on your Taranis?
Hello Mr Steele, if you had to keep one remote with you...which one ? Bonne journée
where can you get that skin for Taranis?
Hey Steele! How do you setup your switch so that you are being told the strength of your signal? can all radios do that?
why dont you connect your receiver to the osd so you can see your RSSI? Would be a great idea to check whats up with your radio.
Hey, I noticed that you wear glasses. How do you get past this for fpv?
have you ever used the FrSky Taranis x9e?
Mr Steel would you do a challenge?
on top of parking building, drop off the wall the drone and as soon as reached the entrance...full power and get in as a lightning?
risky but pure adrenaline
regards
green wing
Interesting comparison if you consider the difference in price range. How far you went in meters? (asume behind you and with obstacles)
It's a link comparison not a radio quality comparison. The quality of the jeti is in a different league. Comparing the two is like comparing a 2016 BMW M3 to a 1997 toyota Corolla. They both get you to the same location. But which one would you rather drive ... And price reflects that as well.
I flew roughly 150-200m away behind many obstacles.
Did you hydroids the attains because it looks BA
"I could rip a little bit of ballage over here" LOL
Haha I could have
I like the look of the new Mr Steele Taranis, could you please do a feature on it?
Will this work with my s66 mini fpv drone its got 150m range but id like it to go farther
would love to see a range test of the X-series and the L9R receivers from FrSky
i was wondering if you have had any issues with a hum coming through the speaker of your taranis, i just received mine in the mail and even with all my pre purchase research i didnt kow about this till i powered mine on..and if so how did you take care of this problem. thanks
Are you listening to the aircraft audio with that one earbud?
Yes I am
Cool thanks.
ok so what the hell was going on please tell and how much for it
it's 2.4 better or 5.8?
Great test and amazing skills. Could you please explain why you continue flipping switch SE on the Jeti?
It tells him the strength of the signal I believe.
+sukyaki Well, thats a pretty sweet option to have
Damn you know since I've been flying I thought how I held the sticks was weird, glad to see Steele does same haha
I still don't get how you tune your quad to fly so well like that! I have basically the same setup as you but it still feels weird...
what did you have your low rssi set to?
How is your fpv that good! I lose image at 15feet! I'm running the fat shark teleporter v3, 250mw fat shark vtx and cmos 700 v2.
this is beyond smooth
About what angles are the GoPro/ FPV cam at on your alien?
Board cam is 30* and GoPro is about 20*
+Mr Steele is that 30* plus 10* motor mounts?
+Oliver Peters nope. I don't use angled mounts anymore
Any reason you stopped using them?
+Oliver Peters reduction in yaw authority.
hi could you guide me a bit like you have jeti connector to the fc and that receiver configuration because I have been trying to use my jeti dc 24 in the world of drones but I can not configure the exbus of the receivers would be very helpful. Thank you
So the video on the right is what you see while flying? Looks kinda terrible if you ask me, especially during the second run.
Hey Mr. Steele, thank you for the video. Could you tell me which receiver is your go-to receiver for you frsky taranis x9d plus
I'm just starting this, I've got my first quad built. But I'm looking to upgrade already.
+Justin Love x4r-sb
Which flightcontroller are you using?
How do you like the Jeti TX. I personally like my JR X11 over my Taranis for stick feel.
Nothing holds a candle to the jeti in overall radio feel for me. It's a work of art
+Mr Steele. I'll have to try one. Thanks for the sweet videos my freind. If you ever get up to freezing NH, come show us how's it done.
Mr steele ,can i download your video, and uploaded to youku.
Interesting still dont fully understand what your are doing but interesting (are you looking for any control lags in longer distances and video link?) Happy New Year
Just testing to see if the RC link can handle penetrating objects. And also making sure I lose video before I lose RC link
btw how often you are just sitting at the top of house "at roof" :P
Does 600mw really give you that much more penetration? I'm using a 250mw and can barely get behind a couple trees before it gets real bad
It real long comes down to antenna placement and antenna quality. Also Rx quality and sensitivity
Are you using the 3.24 S.Bus or UDI firmware?
"Standard" 3.24 running UDI
+Mr Steele Have you tried the S.Bus firmware it works great fore me and also in Device explorer, General Settings I select Computed for fail-safe to work.
Why is there copper tape on the throttle control??
Why not :)
+Mr Steele i dont know why not? tell me
Very much impressed at the taranis performance. Despite lower build quality and a few less features, it puts up a good fight with the jeti!
+Mr Steele Ah, I see. It looks like the range issue is fixed though with the jeti! Looking forward to more!
What were you doing with that switch there?
Calling out RSSI readings in various places around the test
Ok!
i was about to ask the same thing!
hahah yeah man, I though it was something like dual rates at first
+CyberPilot360 what i though that he was changing the pids for going st8 and then for acrobatics ! and i was...is that possible to do?
Whats that stuff on throttle? tape?
Copper tape
Whats that for?
+bauke-jan feenstra looks cool
+Mr Steele lol
Iv watched all your videos I just ordered a mjx bugs 6 to start out I hope and pray that I can have as much control as you do lol
you can setup the taranis to give you rssi call outs just like the jeti. Pages/Special Fuctions/select 2 way switch/Play Value/RSSi . Boom!
I'll try this one day
what program do you use to have these split screen videos?
+james aspinall You can do that with any std video editor.
+amisoftau i use windows movie maker. cant seem to do split screen
I fly a Taranis with a dx4 in the city in China and have had zero issues...even near the bullet train stations ( only place there is good open space) and those environments must be crazy saturated!!! The trains are electric with tons of high voltage cables every where over head...

I have thought this before. But I'm not sure it its legitimate. Might just be a mental thing.
Never the less if I go out and am planning on long range stuff or sketchy inner city flights. I full charge my lipo in my taranis
+Mr Steele Thanks pal
I skimmed the vid , but before I watch it all, do you do a line of site test? Give exact or even rough distances?
Is the Jeti really $1000 better than the Taranis?
As far as quality goes. I think so for sure. The range is about the same as of right now. And honestly I don't think the Taranis abides by all the FCC rules
+Mr Steele What makes you think they don't abide by the rules? The gear is all FCC certified--for example: apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=0H5q4Euu5NroDqLMUk4gOQ%3D%3D&fcc_id=XYFX91216DK
