Well, that was wonderful. I guess I'll buy Gimme Some Truth now that it isn't redundant. Thanks for the excellent overview; it really whets the appetite. These Lennon archive releases are beginning to set the benchmark on how to do things properly. Similar Presley releases are like kindergarten-compiled compared to the labour of love that shines through on this premium quality looking set.
Thanks! I've not seen an Elvis sets but I certainly can't imagine them the depth of these, I guess they're probably catering to a different market though.
Elvis sets - in the main - glaringly lack any kind of the creativity and meticulousness that is devoted to these John Lennon archive releases. It's like night and day.
@@AndrewDixonMusic Here is a recent example of an Elvis release. 99% of the material is previously released [I kid you not!]. A 3CD set [no HiRes audio here] including a flimsy booklet made up mostly of well-known photos, ads and session data. Just take after take after take. No creativity in its compilation whatsoever. Good morning Andrew thank you very much for this honest and rich review. Two things I want to ask: Plastic Ono Band was always a very raw and live album for me, so the raw studio mix sounds really interesting. The Plastic Ono Band Live Appearance in London 1969 that appears on Some Time In New York City really would fit to this deluxe edition of Plastic Ono Band, doesn´t it? It´s a shame that the Plastic Ono Band did not perform live more often, this open band concept was made for live appearances. Then, second, I am still really skeptical about this amount of mixes. Do you enjoy this amount or is it simply a bit overwhelming, not just in a postive way? Thanks again for your wonderful channel :)
Great review ! I can’t wait to get the 2LP set, it’s quite likely that Isolation distorts because of the inner groove distortion, because it’s the last song on side 1.
Thank you for this this review Andrew Dixon. You talked about the edit in 'Working Class Hero'. That song was one of the first songs of Lennon's that zapped me right between the ears. I had it as the B side of a single. Probably 'Imagine' was the A side, it was 1975 or so. I am allowed to forget some details in life. What is this notable edit? Where does it come in the song? And what is thought to be edited out?
It's when the 3rd verse comes in "When they tortured and scared you..." at about 1 minute 22 and then towards the end of that verse it reverts back to the original take. I think John missed a verse out in his otherwise "best" take and wanted this verse from another take editing in.
Great review Andrew very through can't wait to get my copy it's interesting to hear your opinion has changed on some of the gimmie some truth remixes. whats next? Ringo or Dylan Thanks Dave
Andrew, excellent review, I tell you I can’t wait to here all of John, He will always be No.1, My Favorite Forever , Andrew take care be safe my friend, Steve
I agree about the Element Mixes version of "Mother". It's bone chilling with just his vocals. Also LOVE the blu ray with Yoko's Plastic Ono Band expanded... Great review, still watching. :D
Andrew, you did a great job reviewing POB. I ordered everything that you reviewed but one thing I would like to see is the Yoko copy of the POB in vinyl with the updated cover. Do you see that coming out? Thank you for taking the time for your in-depth rev. Take care.
Thanks Sharon, I'm not sure whether the fairly recent reissue of Yoko's album was also released on vinyl or just CD. With the full session on the Blu-ray here there's not really anything left to release.
This has really conflicted me now. Was just going to buy the double vinyl but having second thoughts. Will likely go for the cds and single vinyl. Very informative review. Thanks
Thanks, Andy. I've not been interested in the solo box sets -- I have a hard time working out storage for "The Beatles" remixes. And I never bought the original CD. Now I'm looking at this because of fulsome reviews of this release. Next are reviews of the "Gimme Some Truth" release/s.
Well done! I listened to the Ultimate Mix of Working Class Hero and yes that edit is so obvious now. Has there ever been an explanation as to why there was an edit? It sounds like a take from another recording studio. It just looses so much presence and life. Oh well. I'm glad I have the box on order. Can't wait to dive in as you have. Thanks for all the time you put in doing this.
John forgot a middle verse when he did Take 9, which was ultimately considered the best take. Later on, John just decided he'd simply have the missing verse inserted into Take 9.
Yes! I cannot hear the second “cookie” on the iTunes remaster, but I can hear it on my 1980 Canadian pressing very clear as well. I think the remaster has buried it, but I’m glad the remix brings it out again :)
I have only ever heard it as clear as day as it is as prominent s e rest of the vocals on the album. The 2000 mix, which is utterly brilliant imo, is the version that I fell in love with. I only have the original mix from the 2010 remaster.
@@1985indeed I did not know that it was remixed in 2000. I haven't heard that one. Do you know where I could find it? Also, what do you think of the 2010 remaster? I don't love it.
@@adamadachi 2010 remaster is a bit "thin" sounding on cd - but as it's the original mix it's good to own for that reason, and some would prefer it. I fell in love with the album based on thw 2000 remix on cd. The mix really brings out the stark nature of the album even more. Track it down. Not sure if it was deleted after the 2010 remaster but it was the go to version in the catalogue from 2000-10. Try amazon or discogs.
That version of Mother in Nowhere Boy was part of the Lennon Anthology, disc one called Ascot. There’s another version out there on Spotify on the Lennon Box set.
Haha yes I’m a mad type. I only buy it for the outtakes. That’s the reason i pray that before I leave this earth that Apple comes to their senses and releases all of the Beatles outtakes catalog either in an online subscription model if they’d like some revenue or donate it to a public foundation like the library of Congress to preserve it for future generations but accessible to the public. Beatles are now part of history and keeping these tapes locked up makes no sense. Who wouldn’t want to hear take one of in my life or nowhere man. It’s way overdue to do this. Instead apple releases a take here and there at the whim of some person. Other bands treat their fans better. Dylan and stones have released everything in their vaults. It’s time the Beatles do this now.
Thanks for this! Great watch and very helpful in making a decision to purchase this box set. My question is based in your GST Love version vs this remix of Love: I'd have thought they are actually the same mixes, seeing as there is barely 7 months between the two releases and this boxset was quietly mentioned in the book to the GST edition. Are they actually two different mixes, or is the mastering what has made the difference? Nerdy question...but that's why I love compering the mixes!
Ok a couple of questions...difference between vinyl and cd version of the album ( in sound) . Also is the original album included? Thanks for the video great overview Andrew. I've never heard the second cookie! I think double fantasy is a big contender for the remix treatment
Thanks for another really good review! You're really thorough, nice, Thank you! But unfortunately, there is an audible low-frequency noise in the left speaker. It was also there on the two unboxing videos, but not as powerful as here, and it is actually very disturbing! Maybe you can take the sound of the video and remove the noise and put the good sound back. I have not seen if others have reprimanded it, but it is only heard by good speakers that reproduce bass properly. I'm really looking forward to getting the deluxe box myself!
Excellant revew mate. Fantastic! But it's putting me in a quandary. You make me want it all and add I've already told you i cant afford it and usually go for the 2 CD version of these things, but Andrew what are you doing to me? LOL. I listened to YOKO ONO PLASTIC ONO BAND last night IN THE DARK and it's just a blast and now i want this full deluxe big box. But anyway very very good review Andrew and i spotted your (i think) little dig at people who are saying or thinking you are being told what to say and what you can and can't say, lol. Very classy. Thanks mate. P. S. I can't believe you've never heard the double cookie, lol. It's always a pick out point for me that i wait for and laugh at.
Cheers Craig, sorry for any predicaments I'm causing you! 😄 I bet you're right, lights off for Yoko's album and just get in the groove of it. I did that recently for George's Electronic Sound album and it was the most I've enjoyed it. Double cookie, I can't not hear it now, plain as day!
If you're getting distortion in the song Isolation, it's most likely a mastering defect. Bet it's on all copies not just yours. This happened years ago on the Houses of the Holy super deluxe set, with The Ocean. They ended up fixing is later on. I was able to reach out to Rhino and they sent me a new copy free of charge.
i only watched up to the packaging as i dont want my opinion to be tampered in anyway. i will give this a fulll watch when i get mine and ive listened to all of it.
@@AndrewDixonMusic fair enough, have you got the vinyl? i was gonna get the vinyl but i decided to get the cd first because i dont have a ringo record collection as of yet.
Hi Andrew ! I have a little question : in this review, you said that the 2LP and the 2CD didn’t have the same album outtakes, and I've seen that the tracklisting is not the same on the inner sleeve and on the label. The inner sleeve seems like they list the Raw Studio Outtakes, so is this what's on the LP ? And also, which one is your favourite selection of outtakes between the 2CD and the 2LP ?
Hi mate, You did a great job with this review. What do you think of You'll Never Walk Alone? John was in a good mood during these sessions. Looking forward to get this set ....... 3 and a falf week to wait.
Great review Andrew as always, I'm just weighing up which version to get, do you think the Deluxe 6 CD edition is worth £99.99, which is what it is on Amazon. Interesting to see the outtakes on vinyl are different to CD, I just assumed they would be the same.
@@AndrewDixonMusic Appreciate the quick response, true I completely agree, I was going to buy both the CD and vinyl which I'd be paying about £60 anyway, so if I'm paying that might aswell go for the full boxset. Thankyou, I was lucky at Xmas because my generous sister bought me the boxset of Gimme some truth, I only asked her for the 2 vinyl but she bought me the boxset as a surprise.
Hi Andrew, I wonder if you read the book ‘John Lennon 1980’ by Kenneth Womack, which was released late last year? A really good read and unique in its subject matter.
Hi, I got the book for Christmas but not had chance to read it yet, might be a while before I do but I will definitely get round to it as I would like to learn a lot more about John in 1980! 🙂👍
Are the outtakes and raw mixes presented in 5.1 surround like they were on the imagine box? The screen capture I took from your unboxing video would suggest ...no. What is the Dolby digital mix? ...and how is it different from the high resolution stereo mix. Great videos Andrew...thanks
They've upped the hi Res to 192kHz this time rather than having 5.1 for things other than the main album, I guess that's good news for some people and not for others. The Dolby digital I think is 48kHz so still hi Res but I'm assuming that's there for those who can't play the full 192 hi Res!? Perhaps.... 🤔
@@AndrewDixonMusic thanks for the update. Personally, I’m disappointed that the only thing presented in 5.1 is the main album. Still, the box set looks fantastic...and I can’t wait
Great job Andrew. My box set and 2CD versions are on preorder from importcds.com. Best price in US I could find! This is truly one set that you have to go physical media for!
Hi, no these are new mixes. Very similar in some cases, or in the case of Love, there is a very noticeable difference as I discuss towards the back end of this video.
@@AndrewDixonMusic Hi Andrew, thanks I apologize, should have listened to your full presentation before asking. One comment, I’ll add, this album appears to me to be a differ type of Phil Spector’s production in the sense this album is not orchestrated as his usual work. I’m certainly looking forward to receiving this. I’m also grateful to Yoko that she had this delivered to you and Joe Mayo ahead of the release date so both of you can share your thoughts on this. Thanks again
How is Working Class Hero on side 3 on your vinyl, as I have a light scratch over the whole of the track? I noticed on its first play. I was wondering have they done this while packing record or something.
Haven’t heard the vinyl, but just from hearing the Gimme Some Truth Ultimate Mixes last autumn, I heard some distortion on those loud sections of “isolation.”
Do you believe that the tracks from Plastic Ono Band were the same mixes that were on the recent Gimme Some Truth box set, as it was only recent? I can’t imagine they would have remixed those 4 tracks again?
@@AndrewDixonMusic Yes, I should have saved my comments until I'd seen the whole review!! I find it surprising that new mixes are created so soon after existing ones. Either smart marketing by EMI or just Yoko being thorough!
@@AndrewDixonMusic review was amazing and the remixes sound amazing , i was listening to the original release for the first time. God is such a amazing powerful track as is Mother.
Probably you didn´t read my question: would you think it would have been a good idea to include live recordings from the Plastic Ono Band to this Deluxe Set (maybe a remixed version from the UNICEF Gig with George Harrison in 1969)? Thank you very much :)
I'm sure some people would like them there, I'm happy for it to be without, I'm happy for this to be a studio only set. That's purely my personal preference though.
@@AndrewDixonMusic Thank you, Andrew. I really appreciate it that you take so much time and energy to do these videos. I see your point in doing the Deluxe Set a set containing the studio work by John around this album. When they will do a deluxe set with Some Time in NYC, then I will have my live recordings. Just as I wrote earlier, whenever I see for example John Live in Toronto 1969, I wish that he would have performed more often. And as rare as his performances are, I hope that someday we will get a deluxe live set with all the well known stuff (Live in NYC 1972, UNICEF 1969) and the lesser known performances (Live Rally Michigan 1971, Sir Lew Grade performance 1975, the Elton John Gig 1974, and so on). Last question: did you see that Dark Horse Records put a Joe Strummer album out?
@@lukasweichert9391 A deluxe live set would be very interesting, but it's such a shame that such a thing is even possible, it really hits home home just how little live work John did without The Beatles! I did see the Dark Horse release, hoping they are going to announce a George All Things Must Pass release soon.
This isn't the first remix of this material. How does the new mix compare to the early 2000's remix? I personally find the Gimme Some Truth mixes to be MUCH too bass heavy and the overall sound to be quite dull compared to the crispness and clarity of the 2000 era remix
I have the 20 (ish) year old remix but never listened to it a great deal. The one thing I know about this remix in comparison is the clarity of how fresh it sounds
@@oboogie The remixes you are taking about are superior, especially POB and Imagine. For some reason these never get talked about, probably because the original album mixes are getting so many re-issues in larger formats. Not sure but you are spot on.
Just my opinion but I really think a Sometime In NYC Box would be pushing it a bit given the limited nature of John's input. But then I find it hard to imagine a box for any subsequent Lennon albums.
I get the impression that Walls And Bridges and especially Double Fantasy are pretty much definites. I wouldn't rule out the others, but the Rock n Roll album would be a hard sell.
You asked for the LP inner bag and mine, bought in 1978, is similar to the one you show except that stars were put instead of some of the words in two songs: In 'I found Out'; "Some of you sitting there with your * in your hands" In 'Working Class Hero'; "Till You're So * Crazy you can not follow their rules" and later "But You're Still * Peasants as far as I can See" * Omitted at the insistence of E.M.I.
I swear you’re the nicest person ever on TH-cam, watching your videos is always great and interesting, keep it up !!!
Thank you, much appreciated!

Hey Andrew, abolutely superb review. Top banana! Cheers John
a masterpiece of an album and probably John’s best
Yoko and Sean also sent Liam Gallagher this too.
You're in great company
Yes, saw that! CELESTIAL! 😉
I didn’t get one!
Great in depth review Andrew 😀 I have the deluxe box set on order. Can’t wait! Any further news on the All Things Must Pass release?
Cheers Chris! I'm hoping within the next month we know something much more definite about ATMP (not certain though!)
Retails for around £50-60

Great review Andrew very through can't wait to get my copy it's interesting to hear your opinion has changed on some of the gimmie some truth remixes. whats next? Ringo or Dylan
Thanks Dave
Just got the new Dylan 3rd disc to do and then I've made my way through those also!
Great review! I just have to mention that Ringo didn't play on Instant Karma, but George did.
Thank you, I get mixed up sometimes!
This is so intresting!!!
Great review, plus nice shirt! I remember seeing that long ago online.
Andrew, excellent review, I tell you I can’t wait to here all of John, He will always be No.1, My Favorite Forever , Andrew take care be safe my friend, Steve
Another great review Andrew. Thank you!
Absolutely Awesome Andrew
This has really conflicted me now. Was just going to buy the double vinyl but having second thoughts. Will likely go for the cds and single vinyl. Very informative review. Thanks
The John Lennon youtube account gave you a shout out! Congrats!! ✌❤
Second time - they also did this for the GST review as well.
Andrew..you are the best..thank you so much..I am so excited for this release..I have pre ordered the deluxe box..❤️❤️👍👍glen kellaway
Thanks Glen, am sure you'll love it!
Excellent Review, very informative...mine is on preorder
We need to see you doing a full version of Cold Turkey with your unique vibrato style!! Brilliant!
Cool t-shirt, very apt!
Great quality brilliant review. Love it!💯💥
Thanks, Andy. I've not been interested in the solo box sets -- I have a hard time working out storage for "The Beatles" remixes. And I never bought the original CD. Now I'm looking at this because of fulsome reviews of this release. Next are reviews of the "Gimme Some Truth" release/s.
Loving your channel sir! Much appreciated.
Have you ever done (or thought of) an in-depth comparison of McCartney live releases at all?
Thanks David! It's something that's been on my list of potentials for a while (along with about 100 other ideas), so it may well happen one day!
@@AndrewDixonMusic Excellent! I’ll keep watching :)
A great review carnt wait to here Isolation I want to here the different version beatiful looking package thanks 🙏
@@MeanMrMayo that edit is so jarring. It would have been a nice extra if they had released the unedited version. I’m just assuming it’s not included.
Take 9 that Joe mentions is in the Deluxe box, no edits there.
Yes! I cannot hear the second “cookie” on the iTunes remaster, but I can hear it on my 1980 Canadian pressing very clear as well. I think the remaster has buried it, but I’m glad the remix brings it out again :)
Strange. I can hear it clearly on the CD version I have
@@prettyshinyspaghetti8332 That is interesting. I wonder why that is. I never noticed it until I bought the LP.
Try amazon or discogs.
hey andrew you're on john lennon's instagram and facebook stories!
It's crazy! 😄
Great review!; thanks a lot
That version of Mother in Nowhere Boy was part of the Lennon Anthology, disc one called Ascot.
There’s another version out there on Spotify on the Lennon Box set.
I listened to this album over and over when it was first released.
I think double fantasy is a big contender for the remix treatment
vinyl and CD are consistently similar and good, apart from Mother which is noticeably low on treble on vinyl as I mention in the vid
@@AndrewDixonMusic I'm both by the way...hi res, and vinyl...depends on the mood...as you say in your video
Thanks for pointing that out, I'll look in to it! 👍
I bet you're right, lights off for Yoko's album and just get in the groove of it.
It looks great quality 👌 the book sounds like a good read
So it looks like a mastering defect. Good to know. I'll hold off to see if they rectify it. Thanks
i only watched up to the packaging as i dont want my opinion to be tampered in anyway. i will give this a fulll watch when i get mine and ive listened to all of it.
also just curious, have you listened to zoom in by ringo yet?
@@kianwelsh4451 I have listened twice to Ringo now, it's a pleasant listen!
@@AndrewDixonMusic it sounds so much better on a cd than on spotify in my opinion
@@kianwelsh4451 I've listened on CD, it's a Bellman/Grundig mastered recording so would expect it to sound good.
That cover would be great framed
Hi mate,
You did a great job with this review.
What do you think of You'll Never Walk Alone? John was in a good mood during these sessions.
Looking forward to get this set ....... 3 and a falf week to wait.
Hi Pe, it's fun! "Hold your leg up high" , definitely in a good mood that day!
I got the distortion as well on the vinyl. Beautiful set.
Great review Andrew as always, I'm just weighing up which version to get, do you think the Deluxe 6 CD edition is worth £99.99, which is what it is on Amazon. Interesting to see the outtakes on vinyl are different to CD, I just assumed they would be the same.
Cheers John, for me it would be worth it, it might not be for everyone, but the way my mind works I wouldn't want to have missed out if it sells out.
Thanks for the video Andrew, would you recommend the box set?
Definitely, It's the box set the album deserves!
Got the original vinyl when it first came out...I took up piano cuz of this album 🤠
Great review ! 🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Am I allowded to mention Paul McCartney on this John Lennon video... 😂. Well Well Well, it's inevitable isn't it..
Hi Andrew
I may have asked this earlier but are the tracks on this set mixed the same as the same
tracks on the Gimme Some Truth Box Set ?
Thanks
Hi, no these are new mixes. Very similar in some cases, or in the case of Love, there is a very noticeable difference as I discuss towards the back end of this video.
@@AndrewDixonMusic
Hi Andrew, thanks
I apologize, should have listened to your full presentation before asking.
One comment, I’ll add, this album appears to me to be a differ type of Phil
Spector’s production in the sense this album is not orchestrated as his usual work.
I’m certainly looking forward to receiving this.
I’m also grateful to Yoko that she had this delivered to you and Joe Mayo ahead of
the release date so both of you can share your thoughts on this.
Thanks again
This is a great review.
Which of the pob books is best?? .ta
Ordered the deluxe boxset a while ago, but does it come with a download code, want to listen to it on the go
Good question! I don't know, I haven't read anything to suggest it does so I'm presuming it doesn't.
I wonder if Julian Lennon has any say or gets any royalties from John's solo or Beatles work?
I hope so! I'm sure I read something suggesting that he does get a cut now, which I don't think was always the case.
How is Working Class Hero on side 3 on your vinyl, as I have a light scratch over the whole of the track? I noticed on its first play. I was wondering have they done this while packing record or something.
No problem with mine Trevor. Just some weird distortion on Isolation, other than that all sounds good.
Hi Keith, definitely new remixes, as I mention in this video (with proof and reasons why) when discussing "Love"
@@AndrewDixonMusic Yes, I should have saved my comments until I'd seen the whole review!! I find it surprising that new mixes are created so soon after existing ones. Either smart marketing by EMI or just Yoko being thorough!
@@Hammerman48 Oh wow! I was wondering this same question. Interesting decision if they have nit great for us Lennon trainspotters!😂
do you get to keep all the version's or do they want them back lol , My Mayo got sent the CD and Vinyl too. lucky buggers :)
Thankfully to keep 🙂. I think Joe is also expecting the Deluxe box soon.
@@AndrewDixonMusic review was amazing and the remixes sound amazing , i was listening to the original release for the first time. God is such a amazing powerful track as is Mother.
What was the edit that you were talking about on Working Class Hero?
Start of verse 3, about 1 minute 23 seconds in
Probably you didn´t read my question: would you think it would have been a good idea to include live recordings from the Plastic Ono Band to this Deluxe Set (maybe a remixed version from the UNICEF Gig with George Harrison in 1969)?
@@AndrewDixonMusic
Take a listen when you get a chance. I haven’t heard the new one yet but the prior remix really leaps out of the speakers.
@@AndrewDixonMusic I could certainly see Double Fantasy and Milk and Honey being combined plus include the stripped Down DF.
You asked for the LP inner bag and mine, bought in 1978, is similar to the one you show except that stars were put instead of some of the words in two songs:
In 'I found Out'; "Some of you sitting there with your * in your hands"
In 'Working Class Hero'; "Till You're So * Crazy you can not follow their rules" and later "But You're Still * Peasants as far as I can See"
* Omitted at the insistence of E.M.I.
Thanks. This new version is the same, also has those words replaced with a star! Looks like it's an exact facsimile of the original.
