Thanks for the description. I've travelled on the railways numerous times but not done the ferry yet. In winter the days are short. When I was in Norway in summer 2023 I enjoyed the long days!
@@norwaywithpal 2023 I left out the west (Bergen) to go directly north, via Bodø, Lofoten, Tromsø, Alta, Nordkapp, Hammerfest, Narvik ... and back south via Stockholm. That took me several weeks and I only stayed one or two nights at each place. I'm sure coming again sometime later!
Great video! I loved the humor in this one, too! Having been to these places in the late summer, I can now see how different they look in the winter. Norway is beautiful in any season! ❤
@@norwaywithpal I don’t think we’ll make it there this year. In the end, we decided that even though we’d love to see Norway in the winter, we also really live the long days (and warmth) of late summer and fall. Who knows, though… maybe some time. ❤️

We are doing this exact trip in December. This helps a lot since it seems overwhelming on paper. It’s good to know connecting from train to ferry to bus etc.. won’t be so stressful as the stops are close to each other.
Great! People have many concerns about this trip, and I really wanted to take the stress out of it by making this episode. Don’t stress, just sit back and relax :)
@@brendacaroline5225 yes, the lack of sunshine definitely put a damper on things. Around 3pm (about an hour into the ferry ride) is when it got dark and can’t see much of anything. I thought it was worth it even with limited views. There was still plenty to see during the train ride from Oslo to Flam and still saw most of the fjords during the ferry ride. We arrived in Bergen around 8 pm. Norway is such a beautiful country that we’d like to go back maybe in the fall or spring one day.
@@brendacaroline5225 another thing I forgot to mention is we paid for luggage transport from Oslo to Bergen. Since we had a large group, we didn’t want to have to carry our suitcases on the train, ferry, bus, etc.. Space is limited in the trains for large suitcases and it’s a pain to push a suitcase in the snowy sidewalks. 😊
Hi , we’re flying to Oslo in March and this trip looks amazing. Would love to cruise the fjords . We’re 4 nights in Norway so we could really do this . Thank you , very useful and informative video 👍
I have watched your video twice now, I really appreciate your insights. They are extremely helpful. The "DIY" information is a very nice touch.. Thank you

I can't imagine traveling through your beautiful countryside any other way. You continue to inspire all of us who dream of visiting one day! 😍😍😍
Hi Pål, I plan to go to Norway from Taiwan, experience "Norway in a Nutshell" in December and stay one night at Flam Your videos should be the most helpful on TH-cam! I can’t wait to start my trip to Norway. :)
I think what is better depends on your own wishes and preferences. If seeing the UNESCO Nærøyfjord then it’s Persson better to do that journey. But if not seeing the Nærøyfjord is important to you, then perhaps the better option is Flåm to Bergen ferry
Hi Pal, can you do this same journey in reverse? Bergen to Oslo. Will be in Bergen July 2025 and would like to do this to get to Oslo. Love your videos, very helpful for planning our trip. Cheers from Australia
Thank you for the very well explained clip. I entered your website and bought the tickets, according to your instructions. We arrive at TRF Airport in Oslo tomorrow. Please tell me what is the cheapest transfer option to the Oslo bussterminal station. Thank you very much and good luck in everything you do! :)
During winter, the boattrip on Nærøyfjord can sometimes not be possible due to ice. But there are alternatives like a shorter boat trip and roadtransport so the NIN journey can be completed. Just something to take into account when traveling during wintertime.
@@norwaywithpal Not often, but at least the last two winter seasons. This year it was a period in late winter, were the ice was too thick. The carbon hull of the vessels doesn't like it :) I believe the solution was a boat trip to the point the ice starts and then back to Undredal for bus transport. The ice critical point is in Nærøyfjord in the Bakka area as it is quite narrow there.
@@norwaywithpal It has become reality these days as there is now ice on the fjord and they have set up bus from Undredal to Gudvangen to continue the NIN loop.
Fun video! Thanks for sharing. I did the Norway in a Nutshell trip in a day about 30 years ago. Because it was mid-May, there was still plenty of daylight by the time I got to Bergen. Despite the season, I saw some snowy scenery from one of the trains. I think it was around Myrdal but I could be mistaken; it was a long time ago! Anyway, I very highly recommend Norway in a Nutshell.
Hi Pal, I have read NIN do it yourself and I am going to do it this way. When I was looking in the summer, the train from Oslo to Flam arrived in Flam at 1:10 which is good. Now when I look it arrives after 2 pm. I wanted to book a tour called RibBoat Safari in Flam but the tour starts at 245 and one has to be at the dock by 2:25. Do you know or remember if the Oslo train (perhaps the 6:25 arriving at 1:10 as that was the time I wrote down) does arrive earlier into Flam in the summer months or was I dreaming lol? I will be traveling in mid September 2025 which is still considered summer I believe. Also can you confirm that the train tickets can only be booked 90 days out and is it the same for the ferry from Flam to Gudvagent? Do you know if they can be booked earlier and if so where? Thank you and have a good day
Hi there! If you choose the 6:25 train departure from Oslo, then you'll be in Flåm 13:04 (in the summer, and even September). The train tickets can be booked 60-90 days in advance. It varies. Ferry tickets can be booked earlier, but one should not book them until one has the train tickets, just in case. Btw. there are early bird rates at Fjord Tours now, so you can even save by buying the pre-packaged ticket: www.fjordtours.com/tourism/?tt=38907_12_419475_youtubecomment&r=%2Fen%2Fnorway%2Ftours%2Fnorway-in-a-nutshell
Hey Pål. Love you channel and your videos are so helpful and informative. It's really evident all the hard work and planning you put in your work. Keep up the great work! Quick question. We're planning on doing this trip next week. Just thinking about the Leg 2: The fjord cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen where the last cruise leaves at 15:00. Considering the short days in winter and that it would get dark quite early, do you think we would still be able to see and experience the sights if we make this 15:00 cruise for 2 hours? Or would it get dark and we might not see everything and enjoy it as much? Would it be better to stay in Flam for a night and then do the cruise the following day? Many thanks and keep up the great work!
Hi there! Thanks for watching, and glad you enjoy my videos :) Sorry for my late reply here… you will see some but it will be dark ish… ideally this time of the year I’d split it into two days and spend a night in Flåm or Aurland and take an earlier ferry the next day.
This is a very informative video, summarized all the important points about a one day journey from Oslo to Bergen. Are there any options to board an alternate train/rail ride in the event of train delays? I tried to use the Norway in a Nutshell site and it appears the arrival and departure times between the stations/stops are fairly close.
We are planning this trip for October. This really helps. And it looks absolutely beautiful. We will certainly not do it in a day, more likely a week. I think I can plan it myself instead of using a tour company. Do you agree?

Stellar video! I love the twisted bridge. I am going there this summer by myself. Do you know how accommodating are they for seniors with disabilities.
Thank you so much for this informative video. I am planning to do NiN but in reverse way; Bergen to Oslo. But I heard the fjords cruise is not available from Gudvangen to Flam due to ice. Is it true?
Thanks for a very informative video and stunning scenery. Most of all, it's so nice to hear the Norwegian names pronounced correctly. Just wondering why Bergen was discriminated to "Bøørgen"? 😊
Hi glad you liked the episode! I think I mix place names up all the time if you watch my other episodes as well. I speak so much english on a daily basis that my brain just works that way now
When do the waterfalls thaw after winter? I’d like to go early in the year to avoid crowds, but want to see the waterfalls flowing. Thank you for the great video.
Yes, but I would spread it out over two days. So go to Flåm on day 1, stay one night in Flåm, and then do the fjord cruise in the morning (or noon) on day 2 :)

Hey there 👋🏽, thank you for this wonderful video. So we are planning to do a 10 day trip in may landing in oslo. Would oslo/bergen/alesund/geiranger/trondheim/bodo/lofoten/tromso/svalbard be possible to cover ?? Or are we just fooling ourselves...and should cut down on places. As we would be first timers in norway what are the must do's :) Also, would you recommend renting a car.. or travel via trains, ferries. 🙏
Hi there! Yes that sounds like way too much to cover in 10 days, unless you want to constantly be inside your car ;) As it seems you want to see many things I would recommend renting a car if it is within your budget. That said, Norway is very accessible with public transportation, but you won't be able to cover the same amount of places compared to having a rental.
@@norwaywithpal Thank you so much :) Also, would be greatful if you could advice as to what parts should we cover if we do a road trip by renting a car from oslo ! typically for 10nights. Should we head to the west or head up north.. paleeeze help🙌🏻😊😇
This is a really nice video, and very very informative. I was wondering if this trip will be doable in the beginning of January? Also I do have one night I can spend, was wondering if I should do just Oslo-Voss-Oslo, or make my way all the way to bergen spend a night and back the next day to Oslo?
Thank you! Yes providing the winter is not too cold and the fjord might freeze, but it does not happen so often anymore. If you can leave a bit late out of Bergen the day after it can be worth spending a night there I think
Hi again! Your content has helped me so much 🙏🏾 and I have a couple of questions that perhaps you can help me with: Is the noon (12pm) train from Oslo to Myrdal/Flam (arriving at Flam at ~6pm) as scenic and beautiful as the 8am one, in the month of July? The 8am one is already sold out the day that I'm traveling to Flam, and I'm between the ~6am and the ~12pm one...I don't want to wake up too early to catch the 6am one. Also, I have no rush because I'm doing the second leg (Flam to Bergen) 2 days later. One more thing - the seats right next to the WC (Toilets), are they terrible? Will they block the view on the way to Myrdal? The only seats available on the 8am train are next to WC, thus asking. Thanks in advance!
Hi there! There is so much daylights in July that it does not make much difference if you leave at 6 or 12. Seats next to the toilets are fine. As long as there is a window you'll have a nice view. You can also walk around and sit in the café. Enjoy!
Excellent, this was so educational and not as confusing as the result google search provided. We're planning a trip to Norway in June this year so thanks for the video, now we know exactly what to do.
Hi! Thank you for the lovely video. Would you recommend a little trip there between 27-29 December at all? I have read many mixed advices. I've been to Flåm during autumn, and would love to head there for a change of scenery - i only have those dates between 26-30 so would appreciate any lovely advices!
Hi thanks for watching! December can be nice especially if there’s snow around. But I’d to the trip over two days to have more daylight. So spend 1 night in Flåm
Really informative, thanks. Could you please suggest some good midnight sun cruise / boat rides in Tromso in July as I am planning to visit in 24, thanks
Thanks for sharing the great video quiet detailed. Unfortunately I am travelling in 28th Nov, where i expect limited daylight. I am unable to get bus 950, however vy 450 is available. I am not sure what is difference between 950 vs 450 from Gudavagen to voss?. Do they take different route? Is it worthwhile to complete the entire trip on the same day? Will it be too dark, thanks
Hey, the buses take the same route, just different companies. If you have time I would have split up the journey over two days, and spend one night in Flåm or Aurland 👍 enjoy!

That's wonderful! Thanks for watching the episode, and enjoy Norway
Thanks for the description. I've travelled on the railways numerous times but not done the ferry yet. In winter the days are short. When I was in Norway in summer 2023 I enjoyed the long days!
You are welcome! I hope you get to experience the ferry some day :D
This was the best video I've seen on this journey
Thank you! Tusen takk :)
Great video! I loved the humor in this one, too!

Don’t stress, just sit back and relax :)
hello! I'll make this trip in December too .. did you think it was worth it? I ask because of the few hours of sunshine ... Thank you!
@@momshieoftwofie3369 thank you!!! :)
Thank you for all the information, we had a fabulous trip to Norway. We loved the flam railway and the ferry back to Bergen was fantastic!

Can’t wait to do this
Hi Pål,
I plan to go to Norway from Taiwan, experience "Norway in a Nutshell" in December and stay one night at Flam
Your videos should be the most helpful on TH-cam!
I can’t wait to start my trip to Norway. :)
Hi there! That'll be a very enjoyable trip for sure :) Welcome to Norway
I'm doing this trip in a couple of weeks but staying in Flåm for 2 nights. I was really looking forward to it before but now really cant wait.
Glad to hear that! Enjoy :)
What a beautiful journey! Something which would be better is to take the ferry from Flåm to Bergen so you can see the Sognefjord as well!
Yes you can! Enjoy :)
Yes thanks for that info! But as far as I know it does not happen very often? Especially not with the mild winters we're having these days
@@norwaywithpal Not often, but at least the last two winter seasons. This year it was a period in late winter, were the ice was too thick. The carbon hull of the vessels doesn't like it :)
I believe the solution was a boat trip to the point the ice starts and then back to Undredal for bus transport. The ice critical point is in Nærøyfjord in the Bakka area as it is quite narrow there.
I see! Thanks for that info :) I was there in late February and there was a thing layer of ice on the fjord, so I guess I was lucky@@vnasjt
@@norwaywithpal It has become reality these days as there is now ice on the fjord and they have set up bus from Undredal to Gudvangen to continue the NIN loop.
This sounds like an amazing trip. I need to do this.

Thanks for watching! Sounds like you have nice memories from doing this journey as well
I wonder if there is still those snowy peaks in summer or snow vanished due to global warming in 30 years?

Hi there! Thanks for watching, and glad you enjoy my videos :)
Sorry for my late reply here… you will see some but it will be dark ish… ideally this time of the year I’d split it into two days and spend a night in Flåm or Aurland and take an earlier ferry the next day.
@@norwaywithpal Thanks a lot!

This is a very informative video, summarized all the important points about a one day journey from Oslo to Bergen. Are there any options to board an alternate train/rail ride in the event of train delays? I tried to use the Norway in a Nutshell site and it appears the arrival and departure times between the stations/stops are fairly close.
Thank you! No there is only one train between Oslo and Bergen. They are usually quite on time though 🤞👍
We are planning this trip for October. This really helps. And it looks absolutely beautiful. We will certainly not do it in a day, more likely a week. I think I can plan it myself instead of using a tour company. Do you agree?

Thanks for a very informative video and stunning scenery. Most of all, it's so nice to hear the Norwegian names pronounced correctly. Just wondering why Bergen was discriminated to "Bøørgen"? 😊
Hi glad you liked the episode! I think I mix place names up all the time if you watch my other episodes as well. I speak so much english on a daily basis that my brain just works that way now
When do the waterfalls thaw after winter? I’d like to go early in the year to avoid crowds, but want to see the waterfalls flowing. Thank you for the great video.
Thats imposssible to say especially as the climate is changing more and more every year. But April/may ish is statistically a good time

As we would be first timers in norway what are the must do's :)
Also, would you recommend renting a car.. or travel via trains, ferries. 🙏
Hi there! Yes that sounds like way too much to cover in 10 days, unless you want to constantly be inside your car ;)
As it seems you want to see many things I would recommend renting a car if it is within your budget. That said, Norway is very accessible with public transportation, but you won't be able to cover the same amount of places compared to having a rental.
@@norwaywithpal Thank you so much :)
Also, would be greatful if you could advice as to what parts should we cover if we do a road trip by renting a car from oslo ! typically for 10nights.
Hi again! Your content has helped me so much 🙏🏾 and I have a couple of questions that perhaps you can help me with:
Is the noon (12pm) train from Oslo to Myrdal/Flam (arriving at Flam at ~6pm) as scenic and beautiful as the 8am one, in the month of July?
Enjoy!
