Thank you i just put a T9550 in my vostro 1520 cost me next to nothing from China seen a big improvement even with only 2GB of ram installed. It's good enough for recording multi track music this laptop works great with saffire pro 40 and a Yamaha N12
The Firewire port has no problems with audio devices

The processor socket type is a PGA478. If you Google that socket you can find lists of processors that support it and choose one in your price range.

No. An i5 processor uses either socket 1155 or 1156 depending on the generation. The Dell Vostro 1520 uses Socket 478.

You usually can't :/
They are usually mounted directly onto the circuit board.

No you don't. You can keep the CPU in the socket and just replace the heatsink / fan if you wish.
