- Caution: Group Buys! what is a group buy? Should you do a group buy? Make sure you look at these few tips before putting your money into a group buy! Be careful. Buying a mechanical keyboard through a group buy can be exciting, but can also be risky

I am in 8 group buys right now. I always expect delays. I find that I have the worst experiences when a person is independent and doesn't have platforms to sell through. Most of the established companies like Drop will refund if the project falls through. Were I see the most issues with unsatisfied purchasers is that they don't complain about a product not arriving after getting their DSL/UPS/USPS tracking number or they don't complain about the quality quick enough and fall outside of the warranty window, if there was one. As long as it isn't USPS there are ways to catch your product in transit if you live in the states or Canada. If example, I ordered a keycap set in 2016 and moved in 2017. I caught the tracking data email, and was able to log online and fix my address with the carrier and they got the package close to me as possible, since I didn't want to pay 16 more dollars.

I’m in 25 gb’s (not counting those that have been delivered). 4 boards (2 of the boards are extras so i count it as one each), 6 switches, and the rest keycaps. This is all since January 2021 and I’ve dealt with all my boards, and caps being postponed. The only things getting to me w/o delay are switch gb’s. It’s really not the big of a deal to me when things are delayed now, because ill be getting them eventually. There’s not that much gb’s I’ll be entering tho from now on… as I’m accumulating everything I’d want keyboard wise. I’m actually holding off for boards I really want like the jelly, mode 80, sunsetter, and vega

I participated last year on a group buy that was supposed to be for 3 months and received it 7 months later.
I bought into the CU65 group buy round 2. Poor guy had a bunch of issues, but overall he delivered well.
I live in Costa Rica and the shipping, customs and taxes made this too expensive. This is my first and last group buy. It's just not worth it for me. Bare bones kit was around $170 and payed like $95 to ship it to Costa Rica. Switches and key caps were like $160 as well + shipping to Costa Rica, which also was like $80. This is the most expensive keyboard/hobby and it's not even one of the premium ones! I'm spending almost $500 without lubing! (I can't find krytox here).
It's Just not worth it!
I think that the best option for someone like me is just to buy something like a Keychron.
I went with the CU65 because I wanted to have a hybrid PCB, since I want to build an ISO latam spanish custom keyboard. (BTW it's impossible to get good options for ISO ES PBT keycaps!)

Now I have to order stabs separately and wait at least 2 weeks until they arrive. 😒
You might be able to order a commision from someone. I reckon it’d come out to around the amount of money if they get everything in the states, build it, then send it to you. Since it seems you have a hard time getting/finding things in Costa Rica, it might be the best route to go if you really want a premium keyboard. Unless you really want to build it yourself.
