This episode definitely caught me by surprise with how personal it felt, but I am grateful for the recommendation :)
Violet episode 2 drops next Saturday, in the meantime, look forward to Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End episode 6 on Wednesday✌🏼
Rotating Frieren and Violet with 2 videos each week until I finish them both!

I suggest listening to the opening and closing theme songs (with accompanying lyrics) after watching the second or third episode. They are of infinite delicacy in their lyrics.
For other anime that I can suggest, of which it would be interesting to have a psychological insight, could definitely be “Oshi no ko” (already mentioned by me and others, as you have already told me), “the apothecary diaries,” and maybe rewatch cults (“death note,” the “code geass” anime or “psycho-pass” too).
Insights like these are really rare, so it wouldn't hurt to have more of them over time!
Edit: "Your lie in april" too!

The emotional prose is astounding in Violet Evergarden. It takes a lot of experience and skill to create literature that focuses on the internal, psychological aspects. Furthermore, to create something that can be resonated with the audience despite them not having any familiar experience is a whole other ballgame on its own.

Hi! I'm one of the people who recommended Violet Evergarden. When I posted, I didn't even think about your status as an Army veteran, but I did think it would be great for a psychotherapist's perspective. It's very emotional, but I couldn't stop cheering for her growth as a person. With that in mind, I hope you enjoy this anime as much as I did when I watched it for the first time.

Quick correction: The reason why Violet bit the dog plushie was because, as was revealed later, she doesn't have the sense of touch in her hands and so used her cheek and mouth to feel the softness of the plushie. Doesn't make it much better, but there you have it 😅. Great reaction and a lot of useful information.

  • @dacolib
    @dacolib 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +19

While I can't say it was the right choice, I do very much understand where Hodgins comes from. Violet was raised as a weapon her whole life and dedicates her whole self to following Gilbert. Since she pretty much has nothing else to act as a crutch, the news of him passing/mia might leave her too broken (even suicide is not out of the realm of what she might attempt), so I think withholding the information while she adapts to a civilian life might not be the wrong call. But I also agree with your point of how it takes away her closure. I don't think there is a right answer, but I do think Hodgins lie is out of genuine care for her and not just to avoid a hard conversation.
Also, sinci you mentioned looking for another show: I mentioned it in posts but I think To Your Eternity would be great. Its from the author of A Silent Voice which is has a movie adaptation that I think would also make an incredible piece for your analysis

86 might be interesting since it also tackles war and exploitation of child soldiers.
Apothecary Diaries: The power dynamics of a superior and subordinate as well as the social hierarchy impacting relations might be interesting angles to tackle. also the mysteries and fictional imperial china!
Dangers in my Heart: a completely different show but could be interesting hearing you talk about the struggles of self esteem and self worth from kids going through adolescence and them navigating through their first experience with love.
Your Name: one of the most popular anime movies out there. Just because.
A Silent Voice: childhood trauma stemming from getting bullied because of a disability and also seeing the perspective of the bully.

This is one of my all time favorites and it leaves me extremely emotional from varying angles... The narrative, the characters, the masterful animation and the staff behind it and the staff who are no longer with us.
Kyoto Animation is regarded as one of the best production studios for anime, due to their work ethic, training of internal staff, treatment of their staff and they maintained one of the highest standard of quality in the industry. One of the reason they were capable of this was due to their own production pipeline and means of acquiring funding for said production. Anime usually are produced by a production studio which is funded by the production committee of said production, and the production committee usually takes the majority of the revenue said production makes, leaving little for the studios. Kyoto Animation tried to break away from this industry standard and fund their work inhouse and create their own IP's in house. Violet Evergarden is one of such series that Kyo Ani fostered from the ground up as a light novel published through their own publication.
Four and a half years ago on July Ninth of 2019... There was an arson incident that was directed at one of the production building of Kyoto Animation. This arson attack has killed 36 people and injured many others.. The very staff that Kyo Ani painstakingly trained throughout the years. Some of these staff worked on Violet Evergarden and many other beloved pieces. The reason for this attack? The arsonist was disillusioned that his work was plagiarized after he sent in his manuscript into one of Kyoto Animation's literary contest for their inhouse publication. We now know that the work he did send in was full of cliches and tropes you can find in vast amount of stories... Just because of some cliches story ideas... This man robbed the lives of countless talented individuals... Many fans of Kyoto Animation around the globe was shocked and devastated when this incident occurred, glued to any and all forms of media that can provide any ounce of info and news.
We all were worried to the bone that this incident might end Kyoto Animation as a whole. But as the months passed by, Kyoto Animation slowly and gradually picked themselves up, with support from industry peers and their fans. We are finally reached a point where we are seeing their works again, not in the frequency like before but still with the love and care they pour into each production...
Everytime I watch anything of KyoAni, this incident flashes through my psyche.
    Stil raw...
    and painful..
    But healing...

28:11 The parallel between Violet biting the stuffed puppy after describing being characterized as a dog is interesting, not one I made on my first or second watch through (but I’m not very psych literate)
The writer in me really liked it a more foreshadowing about her injuries, how Violet would have an easier time feeling the softness of the toy with her mouth than her metallic hands. And as a way to interact with something without going through the medium of her prosthetic, something that is ‘other’ to her still (though I suppose that is both physical and psychological from a recovery perspective).
The motif of Violet trying to feel closer to things by using part of her other than her hands will crop up a few more times throughout the show.

Expressing my thoughts in writing has always been a challenge for me. I’ve tried several times, but my mind just goes blank every time I try to start.
Instead of writing, I started recording myself, usually when I was venting or sharing my "2 a.m. thoughts."
When I listened to those recordings later, I was often surprised by what I heard and couldn’t believe they came from me. It helped me see a side of myself I hadn’t noticed before.
I still do it today. Every now and then, I even record messages of encouragement for my future self, telling him he’s doing a great job and that I’m proud of him.

Since this came out, it's one of my go-to recommendations to anyone that is a newbie to anime. It really breaks all the stereotypes about anime being "just cartoons for kids." It's heavy themes, realistic portrayals of real problems people face, and the relatability presented by many characters (not just the mc). It also has AMAZING visuals and music. The ost is something i still listen to on occasion. Don't take this the wrong way, but I look forward to seeing to re-experience and psychoanalyze your own traumas with this show being the amazing catalyst that it is.

I know more about the series so maybe that's affecting my judgement about Violet at this point but I'm also not a doctor of any sort lmao, but personally I believe immediatly wouldn't have been a good time to reveal that truth and would have caused Violet to completely spiral for reasons you may see in the future, or maybe you won't see what I'm seeing and have better reasons and continue to disagree with me.
Looking forward to more episodes for sure as I adore this show.

Ah, I've watched through Violet Evergarden some couple or more years ago, it's great and got me emotional throughout. )
I agree that it's very important to give people the truth, because it's much harder to land on the more fitting ways towards healing if you have an imperfect impression of the situation and act on faulty assumptions. I think that in this situation it can leave Violet with desperate hope, focusing on upholding a picture she wishes for despite possible counter-evidence and expending a lot of effort on that instead of on the process of healing. In the same time I think that it's important for Violet to have an anchor to life and normalcy, how ever she known it, something to keep her going - so I hope that there is an ideal world where she knows he's at least MIA, but still leans on the routine habit of writing out reports to him that'll stick and become a more general journaling, but I wonder how soon that might start feeling meaningless. Hopefully after finding some other anchors. The assumption of her commander being alive that the doctor creates here kinda lets for a "he's given you a mission - to rest and to get well", which I'm on the fence whether it's healthy, but it seems to potentially be useful.

Ive struggled with abandonment and a lot of trauma from a young age having no father figure (biological dad cheated and divorced my mom) and even an abusive step-dad, 4 different highschools leaving friends behind, and a 9 year relationship ending with my girlfriend cheating on me in 2018. I watched this show in 2019 and I felt such a vast emotion from this show just wrecking me to my core. I binged it in one night and felt like i cried out 12 years years of pain and sadness in a couple hours. The next day I told my mom (who is a huge blessing: raised 4 kids practically on her own) that i wanted to get therapy and see a doctor for my health and she just hugged me and cried saying "im always worried about you and ill always help you" and 6 years later with more ups than downs ive pieced myself to a state i can talk about my past with a healthy outlook and try to help others with similar issues. I have loads of scars and i would rather show them so people can see how well they can heal if you never stop moving forward and seek help from others. This show quite literally pushed me to get help and not be alone or give up on life. Absolute Cinema.

Regarding her arms... personally I think they're a symbol for a second chance at life.
Her original arms were used exclusively for war, and were tainted with blood, while the new ones can be used for something new, a clean slate from the horrors of the past. They're silver, beautiful, symbolizing the potential good that can come for her new life, but they're artificial and hard to adapt to, showing that this new peaceful life doesn't feel natural to Violet, and that she will need to change a lot before being comfortable with it.
This story really is a masterpiece, I'm glad you're watching it. It heals the soul.

I love how deep this and many other KyoAni shows and movies are so emotional, heck even the comedy ones are amazing - they do some of THE best show of body language and subtle hints. They really took the "show dont tell" up into a new standard, and i respect them for that.

28:25 I think right there she was holding the dog with her mouth so that she could readjust the bandages on her arms. Obviously since she had lost her arms and gotten them replaced, I think either Hodgins didn't know of her injuries, or how it was now settling in of her true condition. Since at 26:49 when he grabbed her arm, it focused on his grip on it, then moved to a shocked/concerned look on his face. Probably feeling the metal of the fake arms. Then if she was readjusting the bandages while holding the dog with her mouth, he would have seen the arms without the bandages for the first time, explaining his facial expressions again. Of course it could just be something like you said, as it is kind of hard to tell, but it looked like she was moving her arms once she put the dog in her mouth. Just my interpretation since they were hiding the arms for a reveal later in the episode.
32:10 that edit was mean man lol
33:20 I do think you're very spot on with the symbolism with the arms showing her being detached from normal life and emotions. Saying she's a robot or machine, like Hodgins said prior, or like a doll even. When Hodgins was first arriving to see Violet, it did a close up of a doll, then zoomed in to blood rolling down the arm, before transitioning to Violet injured on the battlefield. I really do like that the job she joined was to be a Doll. From a killing machine, to a doll to learn about emotions, then to finally understanding human emotions. A great concept.
    34:23 not again lmao
37:20 it is manipulative technically, though it was actually Gilbert's wish to have her live there and live a life of peace from now on. So I can't blame Hodgins too much, as it really was what Gilbert wanted. Although Violet obviously is so used to being in the military, and to being around to help Gilbert, that without him around (and without orders to carry out) she is lost and has no idea what to do. As you said, it is hard to decondition people from something like that, and even moreso if it's an orphan like Violet that has been trained and used from a young child as a military weapon. She has no idea what a normal life is. Trying to help someone like that when you aren't trained to, or someone you don't have a strong connection or background with, means I can't blame Hodgins for trying anything to get her to leave that life behind. Though of course, he does eventually take up that task for Gilbert, trying to give her some sort of purpose back into her life with his company.
37:40 I think that while the white lie is hurting her in the short term, it is kind of necessary right now for her. She knows nothing other than Gilbert's orders and war, so if she finds out he's gone, who knows what might happen to hurt. She might just self implode, and lose any will to live, since her reason to live is now gone. She might consider suicide, she might lose her mind and go on some sort of rampage, knowing nothing other than being a weapon. There are a lot of possibilities, and I'm sure you know how badly people can crumble from something like that. So the white lie, plus her naivete in not realizing what is going on with Gilbert (or maybe subconsciously trying to ignore it), helps to keep her hope alive. This was she can learn and grow, and integrate into society, before she learns about him. It might still cause problems, but I think for now it is better, not knowing what might happen to her otherwise. Then at 40:20 we see her saying she should be thrown away if she isn't needed anymore. Who knows exactly what she means by throw away for sure. I can only imagine a direct confirmation of death at this point would be catastrophic.
You're going to love how in depth this show goes into emotions, and how Violet learns about them through her experience as a Doll. The guy asking for the love letter helped pique her interest in love and what it means, different people she experiences while working this job (and their own emotions), the way all these will influence her makes for a beautiful story. The studio giving the proper love to art, animation, sound design, music and everything else just accentuates the story even more so. This first episode had me teary eyed when I first watched it, but man will you get even more into your emotions later. Crying from even more sad stuff, crying from happiness, crying from the whole range of emotions this show makes you feel (and not even all from just Violet's perspective). This truly is one of the best stories made, and the author did it in the short amount of episodes that make up this anime. A masterpiece. Can't wait for next Saturday.
OH! If you want another deep story to watch, I have got to recommend Vinland Saga. It is a story set in the viking age, so there is a lot of battle and death, but it also at its base a story of one kids struggle and development over his life. It goes very deep into death, how to live with it, how some people CAN'T live with it, etc. Learning about war from a young age, and how to be a better person afterwards. The main character Thorfinn I think actually does bare a lot of similarities to Violet, and how they have to grow as a person. It is seriously a masterpiece of character writing, and the second season of the anime is when it truly starts. The first season will get you good with the emotions, then season 2 goes "Oh you think you know anything yet? Well take this" then smacks you across the face with even better writing.

This series is animated by the amazing studio, KyoAni (Kyoto Animation), well known for their masterful command of motion, and of their tendancy to showcase the beauty of the normal moments in life. Their employees are also Salaried, as opposed to Freelance, like most other anime studios. They only make a few shows a year, but they're nearly always worth a watch.
They unfortunately suffered a major tragedy themselves in 2019, when one of their buildings was set on fire in an Arson attack.
This ended up delaying the Violet Evergarden Movie, which was in production at the time.

I think you will fall in love and have a deep appreciation for this anime. Don't do what I did, which was binge all 12 episodes in one day. Really give yourself some time after each episode. The amount of crying I did in one day was unreal and my body hated me for it. But, this series is always worth a watch even if it hurts my heart. Such a beautiful series.

I love this Anime even though it was one of the most hurt i ever felt seeing/feeling a story.
Love the healing to scar perspective, but also means confronting and feeling where the pain is, which can feel even worse in the intermediat.
