Thete are villages near Nagpur where an ancient variety of kannada is spoken.
About 1000 years ago the entire Maharastra was Kannada speaking.Chalukyas Rastrakootas were powerful Kannada empires .
The Kannada Hindu Chalukyas under king Vikramaditya II defeated Ummayud Arabs whereas the Sindh Hindu king Dahir got defeated
Kannada Chalukya emperor Pulikeshi II defeated Proud Northern Indian king Harshavardhana in a humiliating manner
Huen tsang has written all this
Rastrakoota were the most powerful.empire in whole of India.The Kannda army was called Karnata Bal and was feared by all orher Indian kings There was a tripartite fight between Rastrakootas versus Bengalis and Rajasthani empires The Kannada Rastrakootas emerged the final victors and were ruling up to.Kannauj in North India. Kannada was the main language in areas of todays Maharastra.The common name for deccan plateau was High land Karu high nadu karnadu karnataka in sanskrit same place was also maha high land rastra Maharastra The broad minded Kannada chalukyas and Rastrakootas encouraged sanskrit and prakrit.Large scale immigration from north to prosperous south (as always) changed the demographic profile of the areas Many Kannadigas also took up Pakrit and thus mahatastri prakrit was born ie todays Marathi.
Great empires of Maharastra were all Kannada empires Seunas (or Yadavs) of Devagiri, Shilaharas of Mumbai Kadambas of Goa all were Kannadigas
Later on we find two Kannda youths Harihara and Bukka forming the first Hindu empire Vijayanagar empire against outside invasions.
Shivaji Maharaj's ancestors was from Gadag in Karnataka Bhosale vamsh is nothing but Hoysala vamsh an ancient Kannada royal dynasty.
Maharastraians and Gujaratis have lot of ancient Kannada ancestry and historical links not to be forgotten .
