Why ORIZABA, MEXICO is AWESOME!!

  • Hello from the beautiful mountain town, Orizaba, Veracruz. We're spending one week in this incredible Pueblo Mágico and asking ourselves, WHY IS NOBODY TRAVELING HERE??
► Start a free trial to learn Spanish: www.rocketlang...
Orizaba, Veracruz is a small town nestled in the mountains of Veracruz. The name comes from a Nahuatl word that means "place of pleasing waters" which makes sense since a gorgeous river runs through the city. We absolutely loved walking along what's called the "river walk" with our husky Laska and taking in the art/murals and river zoo. Wait until you see Laska's reaction to the coyotes and spider monkeys!
Orizaba is at about 4,000 ft (1,200 m.) of elevation which means during December, we're experiencing temperatures between 50 - 70 F (10 - 25 C). We couldn't be more excited to bust out our warm-weather clothes and brush the cobwebs off of them after living in the Riviera Maya for 2 years.
While in Orizaba, we got to see some of the amazing displays of architecture in the city, like Palacio de Hierro (Iron Palace) which was designed by Gustave Eiffel, the same French engineer who commissioned The Eiffel Tower in Paris! In this Mexico vlog, we'll also be showing you the Orizaba cathedral and the many, many jaw-dropping churches, like my favorite which is Baroque and Neoclassical architecture.
Since we're traveling during COVID in Mexico, we did have some trouble with restaurant hours, which is why we didn't show as much local Mexican food as we normally do. For instance, we had the darndest time finding some of Orizaba's famous coffee since many cafes didn't open until 11am or later. (That's too late to be drinking coffee for us, anyway.) That said, we quickly learned that Orizaba is one of the CHEAPEST cities we've traveled to in Mexico!! The cost of living in Orizaba is crazy low.
We also couldn't leave Orizaba without taking the Teleferico (cable car) which takes you up to an eco-park, meanwhile giving panoramic views of the entire city! The ride there and back is only 50 pesos (about $2.50 USD) per ticket, so we think it's a must-do activity in Orizaba. Once you arrive to the top of the mountain, there are other things you can do, like climb the lookout tower, go ziplining, and soaking in more spectacular views of Orizaba.
We actually did a whole lot more in this Orizaba video, including buying a Leon, Guanajuato-made leather backpack for Maddie, getting a pair of boots fixed by a local Zapatero (shoe repair shop), showcasing the Christmas spirit in Orizaba, and continuing our "centro of el centro" tradition (many times lol). We hope you enjoy this travel vlog!

We were there in August and I was expecting very hot weather but was surprised. It was in the 70's each day. I wish I had brought more of the local delicious coffee home with me.

Wow. Thanks for the shoutout for Orizaba, guys. This is the best tourist review of our city I've ever seen. What's unique about the expose you did is that you actually frequented local businesses and reported on the stunningly good values you can find. You actually found our flower market, and things no other tourist would bother to report on like the great value in shoe repair people! You *noticed* that the city is very clean and the sidewalks are gorgeous. Thankyou. And you have impeccable taste. You are exactly right that the Iglesia de la Concordia is our most beautiful monument. (We are privileged to live 2 blocks from it, so although you met no gringos while here, you came closer than you may realize.) In fact, you did a pretty thorough job of exploring the charms of the city. My sombrero is way, WAY off to you.

Really? Never heard that Veracruz is the most dangerous state in Mexico. There's not much going on really. Just greenery, lots of nature, quiet slow paced life. Usually Mexicans say that Guerrero, Sinaloa and the cities at the border are the most dangerous.
I've been to Xalapa, it was great but kinda boring haha And yes it is extremely cheap. In Cancun taxi is like 40-50 pesos, in Xalapa it was 20 pesos and well all the food is much cheaper. I loved how in Veracruz there's so much nature, parks, gardens everywhere. Lots of hills within the cities too. The only downside was the weather, it was raining a lot but was great.
