- Last panning trip of 2023. I decided to go back to the best place I know and finish off with a great take of gold. And boy did I ever. What a great gold deposit I found to pan under this large rock.

The greatest point dan makes is he loves doing this. I gold pan when I can on vacation and have a great time doing it.....he gets to do it and make a living doing it...I'm pretty sure he is winning.

Thing is, I'll bet he makes more money doing what he loves than if he worked at a drone job. People with far less subscribers make a decent living off social media revenue. If he's only making 40% of his income from it at the number of subs he has, he's doing VERY well doing what he loves.

Oh I certainly do. I've done labor, sales and tech work as an employee along with working for myself and the last 20 years of working for myself has been way more rewarding. You really do get out of it what you put into it where as working for somebody else is much more limiting in pay and free time. Never become a slave to your work even if you work for yourself

You really don’t have to justify your life choices but I get it how the trolls on social media point out the superficial points like $/hr activities. They only need to look at how happy you are and the great times you spend with your family to see where the real reward is found. That’s the true gold!

If the universe would grant me one wish, it'd be to be there with you prospecting, panning, messing around. Love this. Miss the good old days of doing exactly what you're doing today.
For most people it's a hobby or a side hustle. There are very few people that have the skill and education to turn prospecting into a comfortable living. And now days it takes a special person to enjoy the work required to do this. Between Dan and Jason's videos I've learned how to and put into practice everything from placer to hardrock and smelting. Next work station to build is for chemical purification.
I went panning yesterday up here in Maine. The Swift River. Didn't find anything on account of the ground being frozen solid in most places despite the warm air temp. Great upload Dan. Thanks!

I work as an archaeologist but am mainly writing reports in the home-office these days, wishing I was out in the field, or back on the placer claim which we don't hold anymore. That's one heck of a claim Dan. I've never seen so much gold come from loose gravels like that. I'll maybe get a flake or two of flour gold but the Frazier has some pretty amazing stuff and what looks like high purity due to the color and softness of those really ultra flat flakes. Quite possibly liberated from glaciation.

It seems that people don't understand the adventure side of what you do. I totally understand that. I recently took up metal detecting and have found some beautiful areas nearby that I never would have found without metal detecting

Any hobby, that you enjoy doing that pays at all is a good hobby and not a waste of time. Sounds like win-win to me. It’s like when I go fishing and I come back with a whole bunch of trout. I’d love to go fishing but I love eating them even more, and that’s definitely win-win for me or my motorcycling an essence it’s just going from one place to another and spending a modern amount of money if you’re lucky doing it but it’s worth it because it’s so much fun. Not everything has to be about greed and making money and earning a living.
