Your demonstrations of recognizing ripe watermelons is perfect. I also love the tips you show us on how to wrap and properly preserve the fruits. Thank you.
I came across your this tobbe sure I wasnt crazy about how I tell customers about watermelons.. I too work in a produce department, and when ever people come to me and ask about watermelon,I tell them about The colour and also the sound.. just came across this video and wanted to be sure I wasnt making it up thanks you very much for this 😀😀
there is a simple rule to picking a good watermelon. Always get the biggest one. Melons try to make seeds first(even seedless) then flavor and sugar. If the melon is smaller than it should for a particular variety it will be like a cucumber! Also early in the season, get the duller thumping ones, later they will be the ones that are too ripe. In that case get one with more of a ring.
very well done, thanx love the twist idea for the wrap; I eat watermelon literally every day of the year, and right about now even the ones from South America come in either over or under ripe often, so like you said, I take them back to Bravo tropical supermarket where they are sold year round, and they graciously take them back. I just bought personal size yesterday at Save a Lot and am about to have one for breakfast. They too will take them back, no problem. Since I am a vegan, I bring lots of produce back; its a good way to keep their Produce Dept. in the feedback loop.
Great tips! Good to know I'm not crazy for thumping my melons, ha ha! I actually equate the hollow sound I get from thumping the melon as a sign of it's juiciness. Works every time. But now I know how to pick a sweet one! Thanks. :)
this is an old video but still just as valuable! you just taught a 26 year old how to spot the right watermelon! i will give this a try the next time i go to the store!
Thank you Produce Guy, I found all of your melon videos very informative : not to mention tasty looking & just down right enjoyable. Now I can buy me some RIPE melons. Again thank you
I'm still looking for that "ripe" watermelon in the markets.... like the ones we used to eat when I was living in Texas. I remember it making this crisp, cracking like sound and it almost breaking open itself after cutting it in half, how "red" it was and how crispy sweet. I haven't had a really sweet watermelon since. I think the ones in the markets are picked too soon. Some where ou there, that "ripe" watermelon is waiting for me to find it! ha,ha!
Ran across your videos today. You have answered many questions I had about several products. Thank you so much!!!...Now I'm off to the store to see if I can finally pick a good watermelon. :)
Hi produceguy! I am a caterer and you are my produce guy foreal! I watch all of your episodes I really was enlighten on some things with your bell pepper show. Keep up the good work and I can not wait for the next one. One suggestion can you start adding produce from different countries.... I would love that!
All Trader Joes products and produce are GMO Free. They have been GMO free since 2001. Yes including corn and organic corn is GMO. I have been with Trader Joes for 10 years. Please fill free to ask my questions. Thank you!
Question. What if you get a striped watermelon seedless round that does not have a yellow spot on it? Does that mean that it is riper or less ripe than a watermelon with a yellow spot? Do the farmers ever rotate watermelons in the field so they don't have a yellow spot?
Another tip my Mom uses is that she'll ask the produce guy to CUT the watermelon in half before she purchases it. It's nice they let you return them but for an older lady .. it's hard returning a bad WM (10-12lbs) that she can barely carry. I stick to the personal size ones personally.
I’m in my second year of gardening. This year my watermelon‘s are growing too full girth; however, none of them seem to be fully ripe! One, look like it had been frostbitten; we have not had a night under 65°. I even had one that had a half a dollar sized mold in it! What’s going on? What did I do wrong? How can I prevent this?
Green ones are one thing, over-ripe ones are another. If you thump it and it does not vibrate cleanly (more like a dull thud of hitting a wet cement sack) It may be over-ripe. also if you press on the underside does it start to give way too easily!
i was so worried because i just planted super baby and i tried to find how to see if it was ripe but i couldn't but know i did thanks . Fresh Is best :)
Hi, Can you do another vid on to tell if your small seedless watermelon is ripe? The smaller, fancy watermelons look so much different and don't always have a color as you describe.
Everyone talks about "whether or not it's ripe yet". That doesn't bother me at all. What I want to know is how to tell if it's rotten. I got one that exploded almost, and the inside was fermented. How do you tell that?
I buy a watermelon at least every week and, despite all attempts to pick a good one, I find it very hit or miss. Do you think the seedless ones are not as sweet and tasty as the seeded one? I pretty much only see seedless ones these days and they just don't taste like the ones I used to get years ago.
You only need to score the rind (the outer shell) and then a gentle thump (a little harder than you would do when checking for ripeness) and the mellon will split along the score mark. The red stuff on the inside will be a little ragged, but if all you want to do is get it open, this way will work.
I will have to look into that. Corn has been the hot button on the GMO front, but that stuff is taking place in all segments of the market. I have always wondered how you plant seedless watermelons, so maybe it's time I find the answer on that.
+YourProduceGuy something to do with chromosomes and using a sterile female plant and pollinating it with a non sterile male plant, this gives the watermelon either no seeds or if any the small white small seeds.
are seedless watermelons genetically modified? seeded fruits have become so rare in the past 10 years or so. these hybridized fruits have taken over the market entirely.
Well that's fine and dandy about seeing a yellow spot on your watermelon as an indicator that it is ripe, that is one way of telling, but by thumping it, is no good that will never be a good indicator, now let me take you a little bit further on how you can judge a watermelon for its ripeness and sweetness, I know you've seen this before on watermelons the lacing on a watermelon means the spider webbing Brown lines, that indicates that the watermelon is at its highest sugar content meaning that the sugar is actually coming out of the watermelon, so fine those watermelons that have all that spider webbing all over the watermelon they are the ripest of them. Watermelons you want I go by that and actually I find the ugliest watermelons are the" best", not the prettiest ones but the ugliest ones with all the lines and battle wounds those are the mature watermelons enjoy!!!
Best watermelons are from saudi arabia, but it's hard to pick a good one, but if you did they're always the best. Goodluck :) PS: I'm not from Saudi Arabia.
i just had a huge WTF moment and decided to come here, i went to our local farmers market few days ago and we got watermelon, today i opened it up and it was yellow i had to stare at it for a bit... never seen one before... it tastes similar... it just looks different, im so confused did i just eat bad watermelon?
Thumping on a watermelon does no good, that’s coming from a guy that works in produce. You could pick a watermelon with the nicest yellow spot and it can still be horrible. I’ve had it happen to me a couple times. I tend to offer the customer to cut one open for them to really see how the melon is.
"I AM your produce guy" that confidence bro
@Elizar Tringov really enjoy the presentation. Thanky you very much.
Thanks for being professional in your videos. It’s refreshing to see. I hope more people see the videos and take your example
1:33 skip to when he actually starts
thank you! seed spitting contests...pfft
Thank you!
I never knew this. I like seeded watermelons also because they taste better and that's what I grew up with. Never did me wrong. Good video, thank you!
I just learned something. How to wrap your watermelon tightly. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! What a lot of great information about how to select and wrap cut watermelon. Thank you so much!
I need to learn to wrap melons like this guy
Your demonstrations of recognizing ripe watermelons is perfect. I also love the tips you show us on how to wrap and properly preserve the fruits. Thank you.
The demo on how to choose watermelon is great, I always get disappointed with watermelon when I get home and it isn't ripe.
I think the best part of the video was the wrapping....I never thought about that very much. Hey, you learn something new everyday!

Fabulous! I am now officially ready for summertime in New England!

I heard that comparing the weights is a good gauge too the heavier the melon the more water present the sweeter
I am so glad I found you channel!!
Stephanie Hildebrand IkR!!!
Thanks Mr. Produce. I've always used the thumping method. I like your wrapping method. Can you make a video on using/cutting fresh ginger? Thanks.

I liked it it wasn’t too long or too short.

You're Lucky to have those Seeded Watermelons > SEEDLESS Watermelon is worthless & tastes like Cardboard.
cd be gmo, usually a sign!
@@monal3650 Yeah, never buy and never eat a seedless watermelon. It's manmade GMO crap that will make you sick.
ty
Thank you Produce Guy! Can you share what you know about GMO mellons vs availability of organics?
I will have to look into that. Corn has been the hot button on the GMO front, but that stuff is taking place in all segments of the market. I have always wondered how you plant seedless watermelons, so maybe it's time I find the answer on that.

I always thump a watermelon to see if it sounds hollow. Works every time.
is it true that the narrower(meaning more) stripes on a watermelon the sweeter it will be?
I tried your suggestions and ended up with a mooshy one. How do I avoid that?

Place into sandwich baggies and chill in fridge. Done.
i think ontario has the sweetest watermelons.
WE get nice round ones here! how come yrs r long like that (from UK)?
Thanks
are seedless watermelons genetically modified? seeded fruits have become so rare in the past 10 years or so. these hybridized fruits have taken over the market entirely.
Look for a dry stem tail!!
Seedless watermelons were actually invented by big agriculture that wanted to make sure farmers had to buy new seeds every year
