  • Ed (@edbolian) loves manual transmissions like most car enthusiasts but they are getting rarer and rarer. In today's video, Ed explains why that is.

      Gotta look at prices of these newer cars coming out...they’re getting more and more expensive so we’re forced to buy used to begin with...and with the lack of manual’s we end up looking for used anyways, ex I have my manual 2016 mustang GT, then started looking for a daily to not drive the mustang as much, no new manuals so I ended up getting a 2013 Civic Si manual, only vehicles I have that are autos are my excursion power stroke and my 89 bronco...it’s kinda just our choices being taken away

      The irony is that that's actually backwards these days. I love manual transmission cars, but having ridden in a 991 GT3 with PDK around Bahrain circuit with a stellar driver, and driven a Radical SR1 for a few hot laps, the (properly-designed) flappy paddle DCTs are what feel like race cars now. that said, when I was shopping for a Cayman S, I was specifically looking for stick and not PDK, even though PDK is probably the best DCT on the market and better than the 3-pedal in every measurable way. But to me the manual is simply more enjoyable.

    • @deusexaethera
      @deusexaethera 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I spent 9 years driving stick, and every shift distracted me from actually driving the goddamned car. It didn't matter that I got really good at it -- making sure I was always in the right gear was nonetheless one more irritating thing I had to keep track of. I'm glad to be rid of it. Although, I'm an engineer by trade, and it bugs the shit out of me when machines need manual input to function correctly. I've spent my career making machines more automated so people can focus on more important and more interesting things than pushing buttons and pulling levers at just the right moment.

    • @erickdj2009
      @erickdj2009 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Sounds like a case of ADHD. When an experienced manual transmission driver is driving a manual, he no longer has to think about shifting or look at the tachometer every two seconds. A good experienced driver will be able to feel where the engine is at regarding rpms and load, that's when the magic happens, the driver becomes one with the car. Modern automatics have become really good and really fast, but they take away from the old-school "purity" of driving. A P100D with autopilot might be better and faster than a human driving a manual gas-powered car, but it's just not on the same realm when it comes to the true enjoyment of driving.

    • @deusexaethera
      @deusexaethera 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It has nothing to do with ADHD, jackass. Of course you still have to think about how and when to shift. You yourself listed all the things you have to keep track of to operate a stickshift correctly. You can't do _anything_ without thinking about it on some level. Most people simply become unaware of the mental effort involved after they've done something enough times. As an engineer, there are plenty of highly technical things I do without being consciously aware of the mental effort involved, but driving stick never reached that point. During the 95% of the time that I wasn't driving for fun, it was a source of irritation that I _had_ to shift the goddamn transmission because it couldn't put itself in the correct gear. Stickshifts make no sense in modern cars, because the rest of the car is aware of its own operating conditions to a level of detail even the driver can't achieve, and it adjusts itself accordingly, but a stickshift is still just a dumb box of dead metal parts. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy purely mechanical devices, but only if they have some amount of intelligence built into them so they don't require constant manual intervention to work correctly.

    • @erickdj2009
      @erickdj2009 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      It's obvious that manual transmissions just aren't your cup of tea. Also, of course shifting will always require some degree of mental activity, even breathing does, you yourself admitted that you've achieved that sort of connection with your activities at work. Somehow it just didn't happen for you while driving a manual. It's ok if manuals just aren't your "thing". There's plenty of options with vehicles, something for everybody. I'd love to learn how to play a music instrument, but I just don't have that sort of artistic ability, I just don't. However, to assume a manual transmission is just a dumb box of metal for everyone, just doesn't apply here. A good driver can take that box of metal and bring it to life in a major way. As good and fast as a modern automatic? Unlikely, but it can be an infinitely more enjoyable experience for the right person. I've owned both manuals and automatics, I'm perfectly ok with an auto to get from point a to point b. If I'm buying a sports car for the fun of driving it, there's no way I'm buying one with an automatic. Given the choice, I'll take a V8, manual, rwd over anything else every day of the week.

      I agree that manual transmissions just aren't my thing, at least not for daily driving. (as with most things, it's fun every once in a while.) My main objection was to your diagnosis of ADHD because of it.
      But manual transmissions _are_ dumb boxes of metal, no two ways about it. That's not a value judgement, it's a statement of fact. There is no intelligence built into a manual transmission, hence they are dumb in the same way that rocks are dumb. Many people have done very impressive things with rocks, building cathedrals and pyramids and whatnot, but the rocks themselves are still dumb. The only value judgement I'm making is about drivers who think they can shift better than the car itself can. (read the comments on this very video and you'll see plenty of people saying they can shift better than any automatic.) Driving stick may be more entertaining for the driver, but that doesn't mean they're better at it. Even the best human shifting gears is like fingerpainting compared to what an automatic transmission can do, and F1 proves that. They didn't switch to sequential gearboxes because the engineers wanted to deprive the drivers of their fun, they switched to sequential gearboxes because the best drivers in the world couldn't keep up and were making dangerous mistakes while driving due to the _seemingly minor_ distraction of shifting the transmission manually.

      @@AB-80X He said "as an option" not that it has to necessarily come with manual. And you sound like it won't work well as in it would be difficult to drive? It has and will be more challenging than using auto ofcourse. That challenge is the fun. Yes autos/DCT is faster and easier but that's not everyone's idea of fun.
      I'm not saying Auto is bad but if manufacturers start taking away optional extras that we actually want, it's not good.

    • @AB-80X

      @@aaryeshg.6526 I've driven some pretty exotic stuff as well as raced in the Radical series + gt4, so it's not because I can't drive i say what I say.
      The issue is that some cars are now so fast and steer so fast, that a manual would not be a good solution, not even as a challenge. Most professional racers would tell you the same. A car like the Ferrari Pista or 812 for example, would not be very fun as a manual, the TdF even less so. There are other cars that are great as manuals, such as the Porsche GT4 and GT3, but trust me, a GT2RS would be handicapped way too much as a manual. I like manuals very much, but I also have a pretty good idea when they won't work and just diminish the experience. I don't say this as a simple theory, I say this because I've actually driven these cars on track and road. These cars would be useless as manuals, that's just the nature of how things have evolved. All that being said, one of my favourite cars to drive to this day, is still the Porsche GT4, I actually prefer it over the GT3RS.

    • @aaryeshg.6526
      @aaryeshg.6526 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AB-80X I completely agree on that. Cars with over 600 hp, manual is not so fun or useful. And Porsche has been making manuals ever since the company was founded and have been the best at making it (they might even be the last to offer it before they kill it off for good, I know they're great, done a track session with a Cayman GT4).
      But I guess it just has to be left in history for good. I always enjoyed the manual mode in most automatics (stick it into manual mode and use either the buttons on the steering or shift lever in old Mercs). Right now I have a Lancer GT with a cvt and paddle shift, and gives the same thrill revving the hell out of it in every gear and down shifting and throwing the car in corners. Have to admit it, atleast we still have gears to play with.

    The reason I ask is because they originally planed that entire car around the rotary GM was developing back then. They would end up cutting the whole rotary development program they had going right before the car went into production. They had to jam a big heavy v6 in the car at the last minute destroying everything the car was supposed to be. It would be cool to see what that fish bowl was supposed to be like.

    The decline of manual Transmissions is a very unfortunate reality, I have a love for BMW's here in the UK and run my own garage specialising in them, an overwhelming majority of customer cars are automatic's, now I don't hate the autos, they have there purposes but I will not chose to own one, this leaves me in a bit of a predicament because as the brand moves through the times most higher models of interest no longer have manual options, my only option is to build what I want, the end result is unfortunately more expense on top of a particular models base price.
    The same also applies with the growing popularity of the X-drive system, for me it's just a no, I like rear wheel drive, I've been S long term fan of the 5 series, in particular the M5, the new F90 M5 for me is a total let down, no more true rwd, no more DCT transmission which is still better then a full auto, both have been swapped for X-drive and a ZF 8 speed auto which for an auto is really good but it's no different really to what you get in a 530d X-drive model.
    Maybe one day I'll move in BMW drivetrain conversions to build people the cars they can't buy...

I just want to say that flappy paddle shifters are great for highways during off hours, and I'm sure there great for track days. But they used to suck in traffic, like they didn't know what to do when the throttle isn't wide open. I don't know if they addressed this issue or if they care to as they're made for the open road, that's my only issue with them. They did shift way quicker than any human ever could with a stick, but not all race tech is good for the road.

    I drive a 2015 330i and every time I take it to BMW I get “wow your car is stick? We never get any of those” from the workers lol it’s quite sad that they are slowly disappearing

      Randy Bands honestly thumbs up to you for having one. I was in traffic the other day and noticed a guy with the same car who’s brake lights went off but didn’t move and I thought to myself no, people who buy those cars don’t buy stick anymore. When I pulled up next to him I saw the manual and then thought “this guy, he knows what’s up” older gent in a new manual BMW oddly proud of a stranger, but it’s good to see a brother in the crowd.

      I don't know many people that drive automatics (UK), 80-90% of cars here are manual.

      xiiBuzzinx so are the people who drive automatic looked upon as the cool ones or the lame ones? Lol

      @@randybands842 Not necessarily, the boss man at work drives a Bentley continental Gt sport and that's automatic because it's a high end car. The only people I've seen driving average automatic cars are either old, disabled or complete dunderheads.

      It's probably ALOT slower than the dual clutch BMW's.

    Do you have a podcast? If you don't, you need one. You have a great voice that is very pleasant to listen to. I typically don't follow this type of channel but your voice is almost irresistible.

    A few more reasons to add is the supply and demand. I remember reading this on Car Throttle explaining about the lack of manual transmissions when the Gallardo first came out, Lamborghini had to double triple check the client really wanted the manual shifter. The factory even went into the trouble of contacting the dealer and then contacting the client for confirmation that they REALLY wanted the manual shifter. After the production run ended, both Audi and Lamborghini gave out the stats for their sales. Surprisingly only 1% of all R8s, Gallardos and Murcielagos sold had manual transmission from the entire production run. So conclusion is that it's the people's taste to get their hands on the latest tech all the time... particularly with people who are always intrigued by the new technology that killed the manual shifter in the future cars to come because the company just didn't find it worth to invest so much money on something that required so much confirmation, resources and ultimately bought by just a few people.
    Hopefully the current generation of car enthusiast when they become financially successful do end up demanding for a manual shifter supercar. :D

      why would anyone buy a car built for speed want a gearbox that slows down the car?

    • @jsquared1013
      @jsquared1013 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@profstein-bq2tc many people find it more engaging to drive and a more enjoyable experience. Very few people who buy these cars are competing where that last 10th of a second per lap makes a difference.

      A supercar isn't just about speed, it's about driving experience. If you wanted the truly fastest thing you'd get a track toy instead anyways.

      Modern dual clutch and robotic gearboxes were not really available not to long ago. If I recall, they used to be 5 figure options when brand new. Prior to that, automatic transmissions were not the faster option, so long as the driver was competent. So, since cars became a thing in the early 1900's, until the 90's, stick was it for go fast. For many of us, it is what we learned to drive with. Today, people want them for nostalgia and the experience, which it very different and a bit more engaging. For some people, driving a car is more about what you can actually do with it than what some piece of paper says it can do.

    I could listen to Ed talk about anything.
    I have only owned manual gear boxes and I feel that the driving experience is enhanced by being more engaged with the car.. Automatics and sequential gear boxes allow certain people to multitask and not really enjoy the driving experience.
    Just my two cents
