For the inaugural video in our new series Under the Influence, MOONLIGHT director Barry Jenkins stopped by the Criterion to share his passion for the films of Wong Kar-wai.
The gentleman narrating is brilliant and is a astute observationist. His description pays a huge homage to this director. He knows precisely what he's talking about which is such an absolute privilege and pleasure for all of us who are listening. WOW! What a perspective and intuitive insight into the Consciousness of The Artist. Thank you.
"I'm watching this film and I'm feeling all these things" THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WKW DOES TO YOU. He can take the simplest of subject matter and turn it into something that affects you the rest of your life. I considered myself a film junkie and have seen sooooo many movies but it wasn't until I was 23 and saw In the Mood for Love that I actually "felt" something from film for the first time in my life. I love Barry's explanation of WKW films. Perfect.
I feel this so hard. I watched it for the first time last night, and it felt like a transcendent experience. I compulsively fiddle and move around in my seat- even during the best films I’m subtly moving, but for the first time ever, I was a goddamn statue, completely transported into this masterpiece.
Moonlight really takes a LOT of influence from Kar-Wai, but I can't really be mad about it when the outcome is so great and beautiful on it's own. If anything, I hope that more people get inspired by WKW, there's so many lessons to be learned from his films
"Moonlight really takes a LOT of influence from Kar-Wai" it does? I haven't seen it yet, but kar-wai is actually my favorite director. so that definitely makes me want to see "moonlight" a lot more than I already did.
beflygelt how could someone be mad to begin with? What reason is there, wong kar wai is a master...I am okay with the idea of works being connected, with the best work still manifesting some kind of originality.
I have seen both films and loved them as well, however I don't see how they connect (maybe the game on colours which can be found in Moonlight ?). Coulf you developp ?
As an architect, I draw so much inspiration out of these movies, how people interact within specific spaces and how only a bunch of frames can depict a whole atmosphere of a building. When I design I often think as an scriptwriter to imagine stories that could happen in the buildings I design...
I have always seen design students who try their best to stay away from film school to peruse cinema but this perspective is different and never heard off. Art imitates life , life imitates art ❤
One of my Criterion Collection dreams: Wong Kar-wai box set, including the films: - As Tears Go By - Days of Being Wild - Chungking Express - Fallen Angels - Happy Together
There's the "Revolution WKW" Boxset, with - Days of Being Wild - Chungking Express - Fallen Angels - Happy Together - Ashes of Time Redux Wich is available both in bluray and DVD :) Quite few extras compared to some Criterion editions, but I don't think there's much available...
terraMosh I've watched all of it. Gotta say, Chungking Express is my favourite. Love the idea of key characters and plots intersecting at the same locations in the city, but some never destined to be more than strangers, some destined to fall in love. They don't make films like these anymore.
you definitely should! His 90s run of films is simply incredible. In The Mood For Love is in a way the black sheep in his filmography.. I'd argue that what came before is even more unique than his late masterpiece though. I recommend to start with Chungking Express and go -> Fallen Angels (a "sequel" to Chungking) -> Happy Together (my personal favorite) -> Days of Being Wild (just as great as the others, not to be forgotten!). I can't yet recommend As Tears Go By as I have yet to see it, but it seems to be an early example of that very unique style which makes all the above named films so outstanding and beautiful
Would love to see Chungking Express sometime. Always love how Barry Jenkins speaks about his favourite films with such grace and enthusiasm, just makes me excited to go out of my way to watch more films.

I was watching Happy Together and, aside from it being about a couple gay gentlemen, the cinematography reminded me of Moonlight so much. I figured that Jenkins probably took influence from Wong Kar Wai. Two very brilliant and talented filmmakers. I've just started diving into Wong Kar Wai's films.
The Argentine song playing while Chiron drove down to Kevin, also the use of Babara Lewis song in the dinner and lastly, the shots of Kevin during the 1st phone call and imagery of Kevin smoking a cigarette in Chron's dream.
Wong Kar-wai, or Kar-wai Wong if you prefer instead putting his surname at the back, or simply 'Genius' if you want to address him by what he truly is. Nothing more to say, really.
while I love "chungking express", I think it's kind of sad how "forgotten" wong kar-wai's movies (except "in the mood for love") often are. because they are great as well (with "fallen angels" actually being my favorite movie period).
You guys NEED to restock Chungking Express, holy crap there's an empty spot in my heart which only a purchase of that movie can fill.
drop $100 on ebay or amazon lol
It's not exactly the same but it is available on Filmstruck
is it out of print already? think theres one at my bn.
It is unfortunately www.criterion.com/films/226-chungking-express
rss313 buy it quick. you can sell that baby for a lot of money. and if you want to sell it cheap, i'll buy it. i need a copy.
Wong Kar-wai is a master of the arts. Very delicate filmmaker.
so are you, Tommy
Matter of time before we see The Room on the Criterion Collection.
No. Tommy Wiseau is.

I saw Jenkins' Moonlight last night and loved it. What an amazing director.
FlyingOverTr0ut Yeah, really terrific film. Haunting in places, but ended surprisingly melancholy, which I loved.
FlyingOverTr0ut sss

This is very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

interesting take
there's a lot of time devoted to seemingly uneventful yet intimate moments with wong kar wai's characters and it all still feels fleeting.
That run of films from the 90's is insane, that has to be one of the best decades for any filmmaker
i really like the way he talks
Moonlight would be a perfect addition to the Criterion Collection!
One of my Criterion Collection dreams: Wong Kar-wai box set, including the films:
- As Tears Go By
- Days of Being Wild
- Chungking Express
- Fallen Angels
- Happy Together
Don't forget the original Ashes of Time cut, magically restored!
There's the "Revolution WKW" Boxset, with
- Days of Being Wild
- Chungking Express
- Fallen Angels
- Happy Together
- Ashes of Time Redux
Wich is available both in bluray and DVD :)

That's interesting, because there's an OOP Kino box set that has all of those films in it. I was lucky enough to buy one of the last ones on Amazon.
Wong Kar Wei has edited and restored all his movies in 4K....Rumours of Criterion box set next year
One of the better Wong Kar Wai essays I've heard in a long time. Respect Mr Jenkins.
Wong Kar Wai has been one of my favourite filmmaker 's since I was in my secondary school. His films where shown on channel four late night in the UK.
I must take a dive into the world of Wong Kar-Wai. I saw "In The Mood For Love" earlier this year, Very Special film.

Thank you so much I'll definitely take a note of all those titles. I enjoy Romantic work and Wong seems to have hit the nail on the head.
I adore Chungking Express!
A great great great movie!
And now we're getting a box set of WKW. Couldn't be more excited.
The influence of In the Mood for Love can be seen in just the trailer alone for If Beale Street could Talk
I love listening to barry talk, its very inspiring and passionate !!!
2046 on Criterion would make me weep tears of joy
Fallen Angels and Happy Together are probably my favorites of his.
Wong Kar Wai & Christopher Doyle films has changed my life.
A mi también
Now I see the Wong Kar wai influences in his films !
when ever I listen to Yumeji's theme from In the mood for love, I do slowmotion stuff :/
Would love to see Chungking Express sometime. Always love how Barry Jenkins speaks about his favourite films with such grace and enthusiasm, just makes me excited to go out of my way to watch more films.
I would love to see a closet video with Barry Jenkins
lyricsfromsweden Yes please!

they just put one up, and it is awesome!!!
oldmoviemusic I know, I've seen it 20 times!
Wong Kar Wai och Barry Jenkins äger!

Really interesting, moonlight isa my favourite ever film and fallen angels is tied for second spot with at eternitys gate, great video

I'll be expecting Moonlight to land on Criterion Collection within this year.
cant wait for moonlight!!!
No wonder some scenes of Moonlight makes me think of happy together. Even using the same song cucurrucucú paloma
Deenah Washington? Brother Jenkins, please. I'm still gonna see all your movies, though.
Ok Criterion you know what to do, please reissue Chungking Express.
Wong Kar-Wai represent Life in his cinema.
anybody catch the Happy Together reference in Moonlight?
The Argentine song playing while Chiron drove down to Kevin, also the use of Babara Lewis song in the dinner and lastly, the shots of Kevin during the 1st phone call and imagery of Kevin smoking a cigarette in Chron's dream.
deliaproductions 👍
It's not argentine. It's a Mexican song (Cucurrucucú Paloma) sung by a Brazilian (Caetano Veloso)
Oh that song is also in Almodóvar's Hable con Ella. Is Mexican, is called Cucurrucucú Paloma. :)
The sequence with Andre Holland smoking is so In the Mood for Love.
Happy Together is my favorite gay film of all time!
bless you criterion/barry jenkins/wong kar wai
I would pay to listen to Jenkins record film commentary on WKW films
brilliant analysis
Criterion release of Moonlight please?
Henry Willette Wait for it to finish its theater run lol.
Depends on how A24 deals with Criterion.
Reissue!!!!!!
This movie is pure art and inecente
Fallen Angles and Chungking Express is a must watch for veryone.
Where can I find this?
Wong Kar-wai, or Kar-wai Wong if you prefer instead putting his surname at the back, or simply 'Genius' if you want to address him by what he truly is. Nothing more to say, really.
Song at 0:00 is California dreaming
Chungking Express> In The Mood For Love
yo hold on a minute, I just like Chungking Express more than In The Mood For Love. Thats it.
DrPavelmCIA, blasphemy.
So good
Bring on the reprint
I second this!
Does this mean Criterion will reprint Chungking Express?
You cant mention wai without mentioning Days of being wild
Wong Kar Wai over!
How come he didn't mention which Barry "stole" the song from and the driving sequence. LOL
Reminded me of that movie but didnt realize it really was from that movie
RDPublicfeatures wong kai war used the song in the waterfall scene first, and then Almodóvar used in talk to her.
Almodóvar even invited singer Veloso to sing the song live. But Barry copied the camera pace to his scene on Chiron, now Black driving on highway.
I thought i was the only one who notice! thank god.
barry and the cinematographer literally pointed out the happy together references in tons of interviews lol
i feel u tho
No doubt Barry has Wongs influence.
why is this too short :(
💜💜💜💜💜
Unbelievable! The guy got into film school and never seen any non-American film before that. Only in USA.
Wich is the music in 1:00 and the other in the begining?
Can't seem to find chunking express anywhere in England or online... fuuuuuuuck
Curious why he says Deena instead of Dinah?
Because Deena is how you pronounce Dinah... right? That's what I've always thought.
Do you have a subscription channel in india
You know?
you know
Hollywood sucks.
Ugh.
Moonlight was so overrated
while I love "chungking express", I think it's kind of sad how "forgotten" wong kar-wai's movies (except "in the mood for love") often are. because they are great as well (with "fallen angels" actually being my favorite movie period).
