    I love the simplicity (in today’s standards) of the MX-5 with the 6-speed manual and normally aspirated engine. And by the way, the 2019 MX-5 has been rated no. 1 in reliability by Consumer Report, beating all the Toyotas including the Corolla. I have a 12 year old MX-5 and it’s the most reliable car I ever had and I’ve had 13 cars for more than 40 years.

      Awesome, I cant wait to turn in my 2018 Acura ilx for a miata . I've had only honda and acuras as my commuters due to reliability but I need something fun . I'm putting too many miles on my mustang because the ilx is so boring .

    I just wanted to say thank you. I watched this review and many others before buying my 2020 club. I never knew I could love a car quite this much.
    We went in 50/50 on the roadster vs RF and drove home with the roadster. The RF just felt like a lot of compromise, plus more money, complexity, weight and blind spots. I see a lot of reviews that minimize that weight penalty, and in most cars that would make sense, but on a car so light, it seems egregious.

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure how I helped, but I’m glad you’re happy. The roadster is the way to go. Enjoy!

    I got caught in a HEAVY downpour on the interstate in my Roadster with the top down. I rolled up the windows and barely a drop got on me, crazy. (2019 base model) I was running the 16" base wheels, Yokohama Advan Sport stock tires and was able to comfortably maintain between 60-70 MPH.

    Good review Brian ! The ND / ND2 are amazing cars in the world today as its price is affordable & there are not many of roadsters that you can say that about. Mazda is changing their infotainment system but its on the CX-9 & soon the CX-5. Eventually the MX-5 will get the updates. I didn't buy my 2016 MX-5 Club for the infotainment system. It works fine so does the navigation system once you find out the quirks. No car before this one has provided so much driving fun ! Even in the cold weather put the winter tires on & its almost as fun in snow. Love this car & what Mazda engineers designed. That Hush O Matic cat back active exhaust was a great mod from Flying Miata !

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Alan. As long as I can have CarPlay, the infotainment doesn’t matter to me. It’s effective and, most importantly, not distracting. Flyin Miata does good work!

    That is one good looking MX-5👍👍. My 16 Club with a Good-Win exhaust, Karcepts sway bar, adjustable Koni’s...just about perfect. Yes, I would like to have the 18 more hp, but not cost effective to me to trade. Agreed with your take on the car. It is a “drivers” car. Great sports car road and scenery👍😎 Nice review, Thanks👍👍

    True. Just bought a 2019 and I came from my '97 cobra 5 speed. I have been consistently shifting second to fifth, instead of second to third. Not used to the tighter gates of the six speed on a much smaller car.

    The same retrofitting upgrade that gets you Apple Carplay will also get you Android Auto. Completely worth it.

    • @johntechwriter
      @johntechwriter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here in Cali that CarPlay upgrade is $500 from the dealer. And, you’re stuck with Apple's crummy Maps app. The MX-5's native navigation app bites too. Google Maps is all I use anymore: it’s on all my devices, along with favorite destinations, my contacts list, etc., and it looks great on my iPhone RX's screen.
      How do I get all my favorite apps, including podcasts, Apple Music, Google Maps, Waze, and other valued traveling companions to pair up with Mazda's quirky infotainment system? The solution for my ‘19 Miata is to use the (free) Bluetooth feature to successfully run all my apps, not just the ones Apple thinks will be best for me. Another benefit: I kept Mazda from gouging me out of $500 for a feature they should be including as standard equipment.

    • @ChrisSoignier
      @ChrisSoignier 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John, I negotiated CarPlay/Android Auto upgrade as a condition of purchase. Contrary to your misperception, I have Google Maps, Waze, and Apple Maps to choose from on my ND2's screen.

    Awesome video!
    Just ordered a 2020 MX-5 earlier in the week, and can't wait for it to arrive. Got almost the exact car featured in this video: Club trim, soft top, manual, in red. The only thing I didn't get was the Recaro/BBS/Brembo package, as I didn't fit comfortably in the Recaros, and for 2020 you can no longer get the BBS/Brembos as a standalone package without the Recaros as you could in 2019. Gonna drive it stock for a while though, and then I can always go aftermarket if I feel like I need more.

    Enjoyable as always, Brian.
    I have a question for you: While driving aggressively, especially through curves, should a driver try to keep his hands on top of the wheel in front of them, (I’m a 9/3 or 10/2 guy) and slide the hands slightly, or should they allow their hands to cross and even get under the wheel? I watched another car review of the new McLaren GT, and the reviewers hands were crossing severely in higher speed curves, even to where his wrists were turned or cocked under neath the wheel. I asked about it and his answer didn’t make sense to me. To me, if you are crossed up or maxed out physicality in a turn, and then debris or an animal, or God forbid a person appear in that curve, how could you then turn more to avoid the obstacle??? You could only turn less, which could put you into oncoming traffic? I hope you understood my need for clarification and respect your opinion. That just flew in the face of what I understood to be the case.

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great question! And thanks for watching. Getting out for my first round of golf tomorrow. A little late in the season, I know. Anyway, always 9 and 3. I don’t know about any other reviewers on TH-cam, but I’ve been racing and teaching the craft for over 20 years. Cars are designed for 9 and 3 because it works for modern cars. Anything else is legacy nonsense that’s been passed on from older generations that pre-date power steering, modern tires, and suspension calibration. Stick with 9 and 3!

    • @BrianMakse

      Thanks. I had fun with this one. Access to these cars is the thing. I'm persona non grata at Nissan, so that precludes any Z-car action and Ford certainly doesn't have any Fiesta STs sitting around. Great car, that FiST, but times have changed and there are other options now.

    Like the demo, but why bring up stuff like entertainment system all the time? That has nothing to do with driving/handling or feel of a sports car. It has everything to do with a motorcar that's pushing < 13 lbs./horsepower. Now, as for the exhaust sound... I went with the Racing Beat Power Pulse muffler. You won't be sorry for spending about $470.00 for it. I originally bought it for the 16 MX-5 automatic, then I transferred it to the 17 manual, then to the new 2019 w/manual trans. So far, close to 90K miles on the muffler and no problems.

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All of the time? I addressed it once. It's inexcusably horrific for 2019. Why would you ever buy an MX-5 with an automatic?

      Mazda is trying to get up there in the Luxury segment so it’s good to note it real quick (it’ll weed out the tech nerds too). If you want better infotainment go for the CX- line the Miata already has the best infotainment system: legendary handling and top down fun.

      The 2019 2.0 liter is already two upgrades over the original engine. The JDM version gets a 1.5 liter with only 132hp. The USDM got the 2.0 and then this year got the hp boost in the upper end. Mazda explained that they could not fit their 2.5 liter into the Miata chassis (for production. I know Flyin' Miata shoehorns a V8 in there.)

So no, we dont need a turbocharged engine. If you really need it there are a shitload of custom options out there in the market

    Rf looks better. and top down give you a wind wing. and handels curves better

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. That’s personal preference. 2. No idea what a wind wing is. 3. Roadster handles significantly better than RF.

    • @RCotaku69
      @RCotaku69 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The RF is 113 pounds heavier on the back of the car and has slightly stiffer springs in back to compensate. That's almost 5 percent of a 2332 pound car.
      Brian, does the soft top really handle "significantly" better? Is it that noticeable?

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It sure is. Plus the RF is annoying with the roof open.

      Brian Makse like it! I live in Ojai (O-HI), in Ventura County, just North of LA County. I’m surrounded by twisting, mountain roads like these you were driving in.
