    Meanwhile the Toyota 86 is now even slower than the Miata. Great job Mazda! Showing the big companies who not to be lazy

      Blake Swan toyota lost its magic years ago. And honestly I'd get a Veloster Turbo(2nd gen) over the super slow and expensive 86 or the two seater Miata.

    • @TheAdventureAuto
      @TheAdventureAuto 5 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      The Miata was already faster, now it's just quite a bit faster. And please no don't compare a Veloster Turbo to this. I had a Veloster Turbo and that was a quick econobox, not a fun roadster. The Veloster was only fun once it was extremely modded.

      Jun Tak I havent been able to drive the new Veloster so I cant make a full comparison, but the engine is the exact same and it was a dog before...very laggy. I was a huge Hyundai fanboy before I test drove a Maxda3 because my VT was falling apart on me. Leaps and bounds better driving experience, I could never go back.

    • @danneu8
      @danneu8 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@daldrete01 Honestly, the trunk space is pretty damn good for what it is. I daily drive mine and can fit a completely full cart's worth of groceries in it. I can't imagine needing to haul more than that. If you need to get some large luggage to the airport or something, you'll just have to call a shuttle.

      What are you wanting for get a used ND 16, 17, the 19 is not a big difference. Just tune, headers and exhaust and you'll get more power than the 19

      Best fun affordable car mx5ND I might just save the cash and get a 16 or 17, yeah.. I like high revving motors though, and the fact that the new one is balanced better is appealing as well. That makes a big difference in how refined the car feels. But still, a 16 would be roughly 10k cheaper hard to beat that.

    Good review! Makes me miss my NBv2, but I look forward to picking up a NDv2 soft top in its 2nd production year (still sore about the NBv2 "155hp" claim).
    BTW, single mass and dual mass flywheels don't really refer to the overall mass/weight of the flywheel per se, but to different designs (albeit the dual mass FW tend to be heavier, yes). Thus, I'm not sure you should be looking at the rate of engine speed change to determine the difference. Maybe observe how the clutch engages and whether the drivetrain is smoothed out during normal operation?

    Nice video, thanks! I'm looking to pull the trigger on a 2.0 RF sport nav. I've driven the 2018 and it was an absolute blast especially with the top down. 2nd gear is my favourite. 3rd is a bit more slow burner. I do like to rev hard and go through the gears. I thought the 2018 sound was great and it seemed to have plenty of power and excitement. I'm not sure about the trade off between higher revs and more usable gears. I think I'm settled on ceramic metallic but am going to see the eternal blue and red this weekend. I'm still unsure whether to go 2018 or 2019. The best price I've found the 2019 new is about £25k. The 2018 I can get new one for £21k or 22k so roughly a 12%-16% saving. What do you think?

  • @OffroadNow
    @OffroadNow 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just did a video on why I picked up the 2018 over the 2019 and what you start talking about at the 4-minute mark is why I went 2018 over 2019... especially when coupled with thousands of dollars in savings. Anyway, I’m still glad Mazda is investing in and improving upon the Miata platform.

    Forget the power or the new electronic gizmos... what I really want from that car in my 2017 ND is the telescoping steering wheel. My arms are a bit too short for my height (about a cm or two) and I can't find a completely satisfying driving position in my car, no matter what I try. I'm either too far from the wheel to steer properly or too close to it to comfortably work the pedals. It's not a huge deal, but it is noticeable in a daily driver.

    Finally drove 19 MX-5 RF GT (sadly no GT-S package on this one) and 18 Abarth back to back.
    I thought I'd get my answer driving them both but I definitely didn't.
    I like Fiat's seats, steering wheel, steering feel and weight more, I like that the clutch and shifter are heavier and require more effort, and it's mid-range turbo torque is probably better for city driving. It also can be easily tuned to get more power (and maybe make the power band broader and reduce turbo lag). And I think I like the exhaust note more. Plus I've only seen two or three of them on the road vs lots of miatas.
    I don't feel like 19 Miata is any slower than Abarth at my elevation (4000+ ft), even though Abarth does pull harder with its extra torque. Miata's engine is more enjoyable/fun to rev out up to 7500 rpm whereas Fiat has a nice punch but then runs out of breath at 5000 rpm and the redline is much lower as well. All inputs (steering, clutch, shifter, and other pedals) are much lighter than Fiat's (that I prefer) but the car feels lighter/smaller and more tossable overall. Miata also has softer suspension with a little more body roll. The clutch is easier to use than Fiat's. Telescoping steering column is nice but not a deal breaker.
    There are certain things I like more about the Fiat but I think Miata makes a better package as a whole. Miata is soft, progressive, and better balanced, and Fiat is more in your face and a bit sharper/edgier.
    I am not entirely sure which one I like more. I think I'm leaning towards a soft top GT-S since it's a bit quicker and lighter.
    And I am sure S2000 (owned an AP1 previously) still is a better car for fun purposes and I'm trying to make myself not consider one (I am so tempted to just go get an AP2) since it's not that great when it comes to noise levels, fuel economy, range, and features (my car is used for road trips since my wife's 2016 Mazda 3 hatch GT is a lease).

    The issue is, if one is driving exuberantly, one may want to push the car close to redline.
    As that happens, in the ND2, one will be going up to the speed limit in second gear itself. In the ND1, one would have been in third at that same speed.
    So now, if you need to slow down, in the ND1 one will have to down shift to 2nd, while in the ND2, because you were already in 2nd, you just ease off the throttle.
    So the ND2 gives you a choice: don't go near redline and shift more, OR drive exuberantly to redline but shift less.
    This is described at 4:00 avove.

    Yes, finally another person that appreciates how a naturally aspirated makes you feel. Everyone keeps telling me to get a turbo engine and swap it. But I plan to just build the NA and make it rev higher and make just a bit more power. It has 170hp right now and I plan to break 200hp (crank) with it. That with a manual 6 speed will be so much fun. It’s pretty fun right now because I can R.E.V. it out and it smoothly makes it way up to the rev limiter that bangs (ignition cut off) if I spin it off the line. turbos May be faster and some people like that burst of power (which I hate that) but I prefer a constant and smooth engine. Sure you can learn to keep the car in boost and not have that lag, but it’s just not the same. You can’t get the sound of the mechanical engine working. When you have a turbo drowning it out. Sorry if I offended any turbo owners. Those engines are great too. I just appreciate an NA engine a lot more. Especially the 5 cylinder I drive. The sound is pretty interesting too. Less muffled.

      I'm not sold on the RF. I hear the wind noise (not just in this review) is pretty bad, and it's heavier, and it's more expensive. But the engine is a big deal. Think about it. People have been complaining about the power since 1989 when the first came out. If I bought a 2018 (I didn't) I think I'd be feeling pretty bad about my purchase after watching this review.

    Forget the power, telescoping steering wheel is huge. The ability to have good ergonomics is a great update.

    • @Kamukix
      @Kamukix 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't believe how many people gloss over this fact! The power doesn't mean anything since that's easy to make in the aftermarket for fairly cheap. The telescoping wheel on the other hand!!!!! That is the ONLY reason I cared about the ND2 update to begin with back when news first really started to trickle out.

    • @Kamukix
      @Kamukix 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ALCLCF the driving position in the ND is very good factory for me as well (rare in a Miata, and I'm definitely not tall lol), but I have always wished the wheel could be closer to me without using a spacer on the car (drive an NC now).
      I know there are a TON of people who just can't get the perfect driving position in the Miata, and the telescoping wheel is the missing link I think.

    I've found that wind noise is better if you crack the window open so you have about a 1 inch gap between it's leading edge and the door. Still not great, but acceptable.

    I bought a new ‘18 GT in late July 2018, just before the ‘19s with the new engines started arriving. No regrets, because I got a terrific deal on my ‘18. Would it be nice to have more hp? Of course, but I don’t spend a lot of time driving at high rpms where you actually get the benefit of the extra hp. And since torque only went up 3 lb-ft, I’m not really missing that either. Would be nice to have a nicer exhaust note, but I’ll likely buy a good axle-back this spring to improve the sound.
    One note about the regular drop-top vs. RF: I got the standard convertible top. The RF looks amazing, but besides the wind noise Thomas talked about, you’ve got a huge blind spots to content with all the time (especially on the passenger side), regardless of whether the roof is up or down. As much as I like the looks of the RF, top up or down, I love my normal drop-top.

      Hey brother, I have a 2018 rf gt as well, ulter sport exhaust was probably my favorite mod so far aside from the power roof which lets me put it down at whatever speed under 60MPH that I want. Definitely recommend it, diffuse plus an exhaust for under $900 is a steal

    Just bought a 2017 GS Sport with Recaro, Brembo and BBS. My daily is Tesla and I wanted a basic manual drop top. It will be my 8th MX5. My first was a 1990 NA, I also had a 1997 STO, 2004 NB Mazdaspeed, and a 2006 NC GT. Needless to say I like my Miatas. Looking forward to the ND1. I’m not an aggressive driver or need for speed so the ND1 vs ND2 isn’t an issue for me. I’m in Montreal and price is a factor for a Sunday toy. Your channel is fantastic! Thank you.

    Call me crazy but I like the hard top NC better. With the top down looks almost the same as the soft top and with the top up its a cool Darth Vader.
    Maybe now it's the time to get a 2013-2014 NC at a good price. Yes, less power, worse mpg, but a classier car, and the money you save can pay you tons fuel.

    • @Runoratsu
      @Runoratsu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just bought a PRHT with 30,000miles for less than 16,000. The condition is great. One of the biggest difference between nd and nc hard top is that when you close the top, nc has less wind noise.

    • @xinglu1408
      @xinglu1408 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And for those of us that exceed the 6’ height restriction that comes with the ND, the NC is our more comfortable option.
      I’m 6’2” , 180lb, and just fit in the NC. I took a pass on the ND when I bought my 2011 PRHT last year because of the tighter confines.

Will there be any hazards If i just leave it there? Can my ticket catch fire or ignite something? The ticket fell on the passenger seat side of the dash.

    I've watched video's of the 2016, 17, 18 and now the 2019 MX-5's and all of them complained about not enough power from the engine.... The 2019 has more power. But now they're complaining about not being able to run thru all the gears without going over the speed limit? What if they owned a Corvette or a Camaro? The next complaint is the old problem with wind noise... this is another bullshit item with only one answer for those talking this crap about a true "ROADSTER". As a young man back in the 1960's, I owned, both the '64 and '66 MGB's.. noisy, rough riding and wind noise are what true roadster's are all about. Don't want all that.... buy a damned Cadillac and be done with it. My 1st MX-5 was the 2016 w/auto trans... I'm in my '70's and thought an automatic trans was my speed these days, but I found the automatic trans too boring for my taste, even now. I then bought a 2017 with manual trans. I couldn't stay out of the damned thing! Then they bring out the 2019 with more horse power and some other added things that I couldn't care less about... I've had it about 3 mos. now and I'm right at 4,000 miles so far. I love this roadster more than any other I've owned or just driven in my lifetime.
