  • Lava Beds National Monument, located in northeastern California, is a captivating and unique landscape shaped by volcanic activity over the millennia. Encompassing over 46,000 acres, this geologically rich monument offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the Earth's turbulent past.
At the heart of Lava Beds National Monument is a stunning display of volcanic features, including rugged lava flows, cinder cones, and expansive lava fields. The area boasts one of the highest concentrations of lava tube caves in North America, with over 800 identified caves, each presenting its own intricate formations.
Lava tube caves, such as the renowned Mushpot Cave and Lava Tube Cave, provide adventurers with a unique underground experience. Visitors can navigate through dark passages, witness captivating stalactites and stalagmites, and marvel at the otherworldly beauty of these subterranean formations.
Despite its seemingly harsh environment, Lava Beds National Monument is home to a diverse array of plant and animal species. Sagebrush-studded landscapes, juniper woodlands, and high desert flora create a habitat for unique wildlife, including pronghorn antelope, bats, and a variety of bird species.
Lava Beds National Monument is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking trails wind through the volcanic landscape, providing panoramic views of the surrounding terrain. Visitors can also partake in bird watching, stargazing, and ranger-led programs to deepen their understanding of the monument's geological and cultural features.

Caves are cool. Especially the ones with ladders and hand rails. Getting home in the dark is a great exclamation point for “that day.”

This is 20 minutes from our house! Heck, you probably passed it on your way 😜 (We live just north of the CA border near Merrill, OR) Been there many times but you showed even us locals a cave I hadn’t been to!
