Columbia years, Laughing on the outside, Take a Look, Skylark.. The belt on Laughing on the Outside is sheer intense ferocity beyond reach, and the belt on Skylark is perfection and unmatched. Aretha has no rivals, like Mozart or Bach, she is a rival-less artist.

This is an example of why she's peerless. She was 23 in this clip. I have many favorites from her Columbia years. If Ever I Would Leave You and Skylark stand out when I think of the Columbia record years.

Also, from Columbia, 'In my Solitude' is a masterclass, as is 'Unforgettable, and 'Nobody knows the way I feel this morning' is a blues triumph. 'Only the Lonely' demonstrates that Aretha took the jazz standards and raised the bar, she showed that she could master the breath control and consistency of pitch and control on straight note holding, perfect vibrato and consistency of tone and pitch. Melissa and modern gospel style vocal acrobatics are easy for Aretha, nobody span vocal runs out of their throat like Aretha in the late 60s, her runs were inimitable, not even Vanessa Bell or Karen Clark can emulate the speed of run that Aretha could spin out, just one word like 'baby' could be twisted and turned in a hundred notes in one short belt, but singing the jazz standards was a discipline that the young Aretha had to master at Comumbia, accompanied by full orchestra in the Columbia studios, the pressure was on but she mastered with ease. You can play 'Only the Lonely' and most people have no idea it's her, they just hear this perfect pop/jazz traditional straight singing delivery and it's technically voice perfection, as well as the most beautiful sounding voice of course, then you say it's Aretha and they're dumbstruck.
Listen to Aretha's Columbia 'Skylark', which was the great Sarah Vaughan's concert showpiece, but was taken to a level by Aretha that is unmatched to this day and on hearing Aretha's Columbia studio recording of it, Sarah said to her musicians and a young Etta James, "Aretha now owns Skylark, I'll never sing it again." And she didn't.
Aretha's Columbia and Atlantic output solifldify her as the greatest voice in recording history.
