The Birds Final Attack Sequence with Full Symphonic Score

  • The final climatic scene from the 1963 Motion Picture "The Birds". This is one of Hitchcock's most-noted action scenes accompanied with a full symphonic score written by Marc Parella in 1992 and performed by the Arizona State University Symphony Orchestra directed by Henry Charles Smith.
The cue takes advantage of several preemptive and forecasting techniques. You know what's going to happen, but the music could fool you, until you know for sure. Equally important is the use of silence when Melanie (Tippi Hedren) opens the door. The final sequence is timed to a split second to coincide with the effects and quick edits.
Ms. Hedren called the score to her famous scene "thrilling" and "exciting".

Knowing what Hitchcock - after lying to her for the entire shoot - did to Hedren - not for one but FIVE DAYS with live birds : this scene will never feel the same.

Hailiey Brooke Took 5 days to film this scene. The birds were thrown against her or tied up in part of her clothes of body to look like they were attacking. They actually tried to run away. She had a collapse after 5 days doing, had to some days in a hospital. That scene was very stressful for her.

That's a cop-out. Most artists aren't gross, old, vindictive perverts who use their power to get revenge on vulnerable young women who won't have sex with them. The "darkness" you speak of, that artists tend to have, is usually some kind of inner torment, like clinical depression or alcoholism, not a desire to victimize others because they know they can get away with it.

Thank you for your kind and generous comments. You are right the film has a strange eeriness without the music. Hitchcock also did not use a score for his film Lifeboat. Hitchcock said in response: "Out in the middle of the ocean, where's the orchestra?" Film composer David Raksin replied: "Out in the middle of the ocean, where's the camera?" I think Hitch was right about not using music all the time. My project wasn't about improving the film, just offering a "what-if" scenario.

I love that you committed to this experiment and gave the scene a new feel. The music really gives it the flavor of a score from the Sixties, and you could have gone a number of ways with it. A score by Herrmann probably would have happened if they were have chosen to do one. I imagine he would have been more subtle, atmospheric and gentle, and then, once Melanie sees the birds in the room, he would have dropped the bomb, giving the scene the kind of inevitable, raw horror it deserved. Herrmann was a master at knowing when to hold back and when to strike, Psycho and North By Northwest as the major examples.

For those who don't understand the true horror of this scene, many of those shots involved her getting attacked by the birds for real, so the blood that you see on her body most probably come from authentic wounds.
Hitchhock wanted his shot realistic, so they put her in a room filled with aggressive birds.

This is indeed a wonderful score. But one of the reasons why I love this film so much is that it did not include any score, whatsoever, just sound effects. I think that having no score added to the terror of this film. But again, you've done a wonderful job in the Bernard Hermann vein that Hitch probably would have liked a lot. It's very cool to watch it with score.

With music, if you're on the same "page" with the artist, you can have a taste of what he had in mind when he chose the piece..... But in a full theater you might have half of the crowd responding to a different choice in music, Hitchcock in his brilliant madness chose to let each and every person in the theater build the suspense in their own mind..... biggest fears are the one you chose to keep to yourself and these are triggered by a million different reasons.
You can't fail with silence, as you might have the small chance to fail with music.
That being said, I liked your version way more than the silent one. For me, the choice you did was perfect, and worked perfect. I didn't even realize the scene had music until I read the comments and had to replay it again.
    Brilliant job my friend.

    • @marcparella
      @marcparella  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@RanNero: I am overwhelmed with your kind comments. Thank you very much. I am glad you enjoyed it.
The scene is a kind of a holy grail and I had the advantage of knowing that working on it so many years after the film's release. So I had to pull out all the stops and think differently. Not only do you have to think about all the visual components of the immediate scene you are working on, but equally important you have to be aware of where you are in the film. How the music applies to the context of the film is critical. Remember the film, based on the Daphne du Maurier novel of the same name, is really an apocalyptic love story, and the birds are analogous to the threat of nuclear war. But in the beginning, it is a lighthearted romantic comedy. (By the way I live just two blocks from the opening scene at Union Square.)
I was so fortunate to work with the Arizona State University Symphony and director Henry Charles Smith. I hired the orchestra and the students played like seasoned pros. I was also fortunate to work with a great engineer, Dave Schmidt who contributed a great deal in mixing and mastering the session.
If you are interested, I also composed a Main Title cue for the film. It is located here: watch?v=qzjHGxITlns

According to "All About The Birds", Tippi's character (Melanie) heard something strange. She proceeded to check many rooms, including the kitchen (where the lovebirds were). Eventually, she ends upstairs to the room where there actually ARE birds waiting to attack. For some reason, Hitch edited out all of the scenes where she was checking different rooms except the kitchen. After the kitchen scene, the camera cuts to her going upstairs. Yes, it still makes no sense for her to go searching for something that could very well be birds-in-waiting, but at least seeing her check different rooms would have made it seem a little more sensible perhaps before being attacked in the last room.

Alfred Hitchcock made her redo this scene over forty times. Being under contract made telling him to fuck off could result in no more film roles and costly litigation. She had live birds thrown at her again and again, by the end of the day's filming she was covered in bird shit, exhausted, and emotionally shattered. He wanted to have a fling with her but she wasn't interested (and seeing pictures of him you can understand why) being rejected by her made the old bastard mad. So he decided to make things difficult...

@Larry. You are probably right and I do enjoy the scene without my score as well. My goal was not to improve the scene but only present it with a different interpretation. Film Noir was a popular genre in those years and Hitchcock certainly drew from its stark realism. But then again imagine the shower scene from Psycho without Hermann's screeching minor 9ths. We have been conditioned by what we see and listen to and any new interpretation is suspicious.

A great compliment considering John Williams scored four or five episodes and the music was used over and over in the series because it's so good.

@meanoldrunk: Nope I did not. I have a letter from MCA Entertainment that states they do not object to limited "Fair Use" usage of this clip. I had written to the copyright owner (MCA Entertainment) in 1992 asking for permission to use the clip for promotional purposes. This clip has been showed in a number of film music classes and Ms. Hedren was sent a copy of the clip back in 1992. She wrote to me expressing her opinion of the clip. (See the above notes.) Everything is good.

You did a wonderful job scoring this. However, it also shows that Hitchcock was right to do this scene, and the rest of the movie with no score. The concept of birds attacking people like that is so unrealistic, so there being no musical score made it seem less cinematic and more realistic-- and actually-- more suspenseful.

After everything she has seen throughout the day, why would she go upstairs alone! Even tippi hedren said she was clueless by it when they were filming this scene.

Teddy: Whoa, still going. That's one tough pigeon.
    (Bob shudders for a bit)
Bob: I wish I had gone to Rudy's birthday. Is it weird if I just show up?
Linda: Bob, what is going on with you? I've never seen you like this.
Bob: Well, we've never had a pigeon trapped in the restaurant before, Lin. We've lived a blessed life, and now that's over.
Teddy: What's the matter? Did something happen to you? Did a pigeon wrong you?
Bob: I don't think so. I mean, maybe. But it would probably take years of therapy to- Oh, my God, I remember!
Linda: What? What? What happened? What?
Bob: I just remembered being in this house. It was dark inside. And for some reason, I don't know why. I-I went upstairs. Then I heard this strange fluttering behind a door, and I stared at the doorknob for what felt like three minutes. But then I went in, and there was this big hole in the ceiling. You could see the sky through it. And then I heard, I-I heard this terrible cooing. I guess a bunch of pigeons had flown in there, like, dozens. And then... and then they attacked me!
Linda: That didn't happen to you.
    Bob: Yes, it did.
Linda: No, it happened to Tippi Hedren in The Birds.
    Bob: What?
Teddy: Bob, you're describing an exact scene in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. They call it "shot for shot."
Linda: Bob, you think you're Tippi Hedren, honey.
Bob: I don't think I'm Tippi Hedren. I'm describing an event from my life.
(Later, Linda and Teddy show Bob the scene of the movie where Tippi Hedren’s character was attack by the bunch of birds)
Bob: Oh, my God, I'm Tippi Hedren.
    Teddy: Yeah, you wish.
Bob: I guess I must have seen that movie when I was young.
Linda: Oh, you poor thing. You poor dumb thing.

Apparently that scene was as real as they came because she was in a small room with birds being launched at her out of boxes and she ended up with one of them peck underneath her eye and she recieved a cut under her left eye
