    Tony Banks is one of my favorites, very under-rated synth player. you're good too :)

    Nice! You're now using the Behringer 2600! With that 1978 flavour ;)
    Love that synth. Here in Argentina is not shipped still, only the odyssey, but still waiting. 😎

    Sounds beautiful! Yes, that synth is quirky, but it sounds fabulous. I might be too picky, but I dislike most digital synths trying to do the job of an analog lead. Your sounds are again dead-on. That gorgeous phased/chorused organ and that singing lead synth. Just beautiful! Thanks for showing the exact voicings and fingering! Much appreciated!

      I haven’t found a suitable analog plug-in for leads, that’s for sure.

      @@mattthomasoverdrive4514 well I think your latest software plugins are very very close and fine for analog leads. You definitely know how to fine tweak and perform.

    I love your videos. One thing I noticed, I’ve watched a lot of your stuff on my iPhone and because you pan the CE-1 hard left and hard right I always end up with a Hammond or CP70 that has a heavy vibrato on it while I’m holding my phone horizontally and no chorus or vibrato while I’m holding my phone vertically. So apparently my phone is mono and I get a different channel depending on the orientation of my phone.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The single biggest complaints I get are about the effects, for what I believe is the very reason you describe.

    • @koenraadhendrik
      @koenraadhendrik 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattthomasoverdrive4514 you can fix this by panning less extreme. When the two signals are blend you’ll get the chorus effect, right now you have vibrato in one speaker and a clean signal in the other speaker. I own a CP70 and CE-1 as well and I pan them just a little bit to get a stereo image.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is the first time I’ve used my new Radial Reamp box for one of these videos. My effects reamp track for the organ was a default stereo track in Logic. I like the hard panning - not only does it match his live mixes heard on stereo board tapes and radio shows, but it sounds just like the JC120 I keep under my CP80.

    • @koenraadhendrik
      @koenraadhendrik 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattthomasoverdrive4514 I didn’t know Tony panned his chorus hard left and right. Very interesting. Do you know which show I can listen to so I can hear this? I’m just curious….

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll have to revisit my iTunes. I’ve ripped all the soundboards and radio shows from 1974-1984 for this band! I’ll report back.

  • @fulviabarkstonash

    Love you videos Matt. Can I ask, do you think the 2600 on the studio version may be going through a flanger? Or is the monetary square wave more likely pwm modulation? I hear it around 2'30" to 2'35'' in the studio version.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like the two oscillators are tightly tuned and are drifting in and out of phase there, but yes, I hear PWM. Or maybe one of the oscillators is a pulse wave and the phasing of the tuning is bringing out the pulse wave OSC.

    Hello, sounds very good. At the 02:37 solo, if I'm not wrong the time signature is set at 4/8 or 8/8, but sometimes I feel the signature as set to 6/8, which I think it is wrong. How do you do group the notes to play them fluid as they must? 4/8 or 8/8? thanks.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m always thinking of it in 4/4 because the organ chords change in half note patterns. Also, that riff is “borrowed” from Cinema Show in 7/8.

    • @mjaa1307
      @mjaa1307 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattthomasoverdrive4514 ok 4/4 you mean your left hand? thanks

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, since the organ chords in the left hand are half notes, it’s not really helpful to me to group the right hand sixteenth notes any other way. It’s a bit awkward in places, but that’s Genesis music!

    Great!! Now do 2021 version!...
    It's joke! Excellent as always. Your performances are a time travel to what I consider the best Tony Banks era in matter of synths, keyboards and effects.
    Speaking of current Genesis tour, I'd like to see what people like you think it should the ideal keyboard line-up and setlist for this new tour. About setlist, it seems the 2007 one had more variety on songs and this one is missing great prog and semi-prog songs that maybe Phil could sing properly (and the instrumentals too). Missing is Los Endos, that I hoped to be at the end (I'd love them to play it on the very last show).
    Even The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway would sound great in its original live version even low keyed (Phil sings it in C, lower than Ray Wilson). If I could propose ideas, one of which would be an ending minimedley:
    Dance on a Volcano / The Lamb (low keyed, otherwise similar to the beginning of the 1992 Old Medley) / Watcher of the Skies (as in 1982 tour) (coincidentally marking the 50th anniversary of Foxtrot and 40th and 30th to Encore Tour and We Can't Dance Tour respectively.)

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Solid suggestions. I think those 70s pieces were chosen to give Phil some chances on the kit each night; it seems as if the 21st century tours are more focused on songs to sing. Speaking of anniversaries, my band is gearing up for anniversaries of the Encore Tour, Six of the Best, and the Mama Tour, so I’ll share my music director and synth work with you all over the next couple years.

    • @FukiMakai
      @FukiMakai 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattthomasoverdrive4514 Ironic ir you notice Phil has some troubles to sing, so more instrumental bits would give him some breath in between.

      So The Genesis Show will cover Mama stuff? Neat!! That means you will learn the '83 album stuff, getting the new synths and doing the medleys? (The 1983-84 medleys are one of my favorites, being the Old Medleys that involved Squonk and Firth of Fifth the rarest, not only because it weren't released officially but because there were at least 4 variants during both legs of the tour. The "In the Cage Medley" is one of the best variations of it too, with the add of the B section of In That Quiet Earth (despite the synths sounds worse in the 1984 video show than in the non-official recordings, also I think Tony changed synths in early 1984 so the tone is different than in 1983 that resembled the Abacab tour ones more)
      I saw you didn't learned That's All yet in one of your VSTs videos, but you will get it, it's pretty easy compared to other stuff also.

      I learn all the keyboard, guitar, and bass parts and chart them out for my band, so they’re all difficult to learn! I love those songs and arrangements but I don’t get that excited about Synclavier and Emulator sounds. I do have those Arturia plugins.

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514

      If the length of the release in your amp envelope is long like Tony had it, you can play the whole solo detaché instead of legato, which makes things so much easier. That part you marked is the best example.

    Did Tony Banks use a leslie every time he used the hammond organ?

    • @mattthomasoverdrive4514
      @mattthomasoverdrive4514  ปีที่แล้ว

      He used a Leslie for not only his Hammond, but also his Mellotron, 12-string, etc from 1970-1976, through the Trick of the Tail album and tour. He stopped using it on Wind and Wuthering in 1976, using the the set up in this video all through the Duke album and tour in 1980.
