Lots of sound advice here. My grandma drummed one into the family. "Never leave a room, empty-handed." I always look around a room every time I'm about to leave it, to see if there's anything in there that should be in another space. Then I take whatever it is with me and put it away.

I agree a tiny home is achieved by a lot of small tasks instead of a big clean . I have made a lot of progress by my to do list for every day .1.do dishes 2. Make bed 3. Broom vac rooms 4.do a mad dash 5 minute pick up 5. Do a small clean and organize project. My list takes around 20 minutes and now the do the dishes step includes wiping counters, table, stove and fridge, microwave and toaster oven as needed. Each day it gets a little easier and a little better.

So, this video was an eye opener for me! My "clean as you go" needs improvement. My "a place for everything and everything in it's place" is non existent. And my "wait until I'm motivated,"....well, the motivation never appears.
BUT! There has been improvement, so all is not lost.
    Thanks!

My lack of motivation is exactly why I have to clean as I go. I can't ever count on feeling motivated to do a big clean, but I can do little things here and there, like wiping up a spill, always wiping out the sink, quick swipe of the toilet, etc. Learned a bunch from Flylady.

  • @JFlocRNa
    @JFlocRNa 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

"I'll do it when I feel like it." Nope, will never happen. Even if your whole day has gone down the toilet, do a little cleaning or pickup for 5-10 minutes and now your day is a win! I've made my bed at 5pm and it usually spurs me to do a little more.

This was very affirming because I do all of these things and do indeed have a pretty tidy home (I was actually looking for new secrets in case there was something I missed 😂)
Once your home is reasonably tidy, it's easier to keep it that way with these tips by the way. Decluttering and getting in these habits combine to gradually give you a perpetually fairly clean home.
I say fairly, because I have two kids and a cat and a partner and a full time job so, yes, it's not perfectly clean at any point. But it's never dirty, and never messy in such a state that takes longer than 20 minutes to deal with, because of my routines (and making my partner do the dishes, I hate doing dishes)

As far as motivation goes, I try to trick myself into doing the task I don’t want to do 😂 my various methods are to put on a podcast/youtube video for a distraction and just get started (don’t over think). Another is to say, “okay, I’ll work on that for 5 minutes “ and set a timer and start. Most of the time I’ll just keep going until I’m done even when the timer stops. Also I’ll tell myself, “me tomorrow will be happy I went ahead and did this now” cause ignoring the dishes isn’t going to make them go away or stop growing in quantity, there will just be even more tomorrow. And maintaining cleanliness is a lot easier than restoring it after letting it go for a long time.

    The Assigned Spot: Remedial Lesson
Don't put random things in spots that have been assigned to other things!
For some reason this was hard for me to grasp automatically, I have to work at it.
Example: There is a spot in my pantry for extra paper towels. Sometimes when I'm low on paper towels, other random things will get put into that empty spot where the paper towels should go. Then when I restock paper towels there's no place to put them, so, then I'm constantly tripping over a big 24-pack of paper towels that have been left just inside the door in the kitchen.

I live alone, have ADHD, Depresdion, Anxiety and 3 cats. I am back on The Tidy Train but when I am off it - Oh Wow !
I now " plan". Going to the kitchen - take dishes, glassware, trash add any items that need to be put back in Mt front/pantry. Same with bath and bedroom gather all that meets to go and can be dropped off en route. It works and my ride on The Tidy TrIn will, I think , continue. I also try almost daily to do a 15 minute per room clean/organize .

Great points! :) I also think a lot of it is 'when should things get cleaned'.
I think many people think 'this is visibly dirty - now it needs to be cleaned'. So they let things get out of control. Naturally tidy people follow their cleaning routines, whether or not it is visibly dirty, even if it doesn't really need to be cleaned. It is just a habit they are in - and it makes things a lot faster too, because it require less scrubbing. Their 'barre' for when something needs cleaning is simply at a different level.

  • @girly339

My mom is the tidiest of people. She does all of this except the assigned spot. Things get put up where her heart tells her in the moment. So sometimes hard to find things. We had a primitive grain bin as our toy box. It is (she still has it and I WANT it) 6’ L x 1’ W x 2’ D. It’s divided into 4 sections inside. We each go 2 sections for toys. We had to donate old toys anytime we go new toys. I really need to do this w my kids toys. For now I sort by type and they only can have 2 kinds at a time. The rest are out of reach on top of my 7’ ish bookshelves. She also never puts trash on the counter even for a moment. Neither does my dad she got him to stop that decades ago. She was ready to murder my husband when she was helping me postpartum because he was rarely throwing away his own trash. She made a point of taking him by the hand and demonstrating how a trash can works. He started throwing away his trash more regularly.

This is so tough! When I was working full time outside the home, I did a modified Flylady. So I would do meal planning on my lunch break at and order groceries to be delivered. The home blessing I would do one task a day. Any tasks I didn't get during the week, would be done on the weekend. I would follow the morning and evening routine everyday. Zone work I would just do about 10-15 minutes a week when possible.

Full permission to have a less tidy house at this time. I'd look for all the shortcuts you can. Buy precut lettuce, you'll eat more salads. Throw toilet cleaner in before you all leave for the day. Use your washer (if you have one) as a hamper. If you can afford it, get a Roomba or Shark robo vac (don't get the mop function, it's not great). Make simple meals. Do a 5 min tidy each evening. Sort mail into the recycle/trash/shred immediately. Put the bills and such in one spot, I use a clipboard in a drawer. Once a week take a few moments and pay them. (Or set up auto pay.) Your main task is to enjoy your evenings and weekends with your precious family. Clean and tidy will come very soon as your little is more independent. I know you didn't ask me but I remember those days and the pressure I felt. Many blessings 🌻🍄

Speaking from experience, there is a limited number of hours in the day. And you have to prioritize spending interactive time with baby, esp upon arrival at home. It is key. Then, after 10-20 minutes, move forward into preparing a meal, unpacking lunch boxes, dishes, etc. Put baby in a high chair, nearby, and let them watch you. Or let them put cans of cat food away, in a bottom cupboard, once a toddler. Let kid do something, even if it's slow. You can vacuum floors when baby is in one hand. You can wipe down bathroom sink, when baby in the tub. Some things have to wait till toddler, but you will squeeze things in. Just allow yourself grace for it to be less perfect, till 1 or 2 yrs old. Hire a housekeeper is an option, if your a stress ball about it. They keep up laundry, or trash removal etc.

No one can ever accuse me of being a great housekeeper. In fact, I don't like people coming in just for that reason, and if someone comes in before I can clean up, I am so embarrassed. But I am working on it. I take things with me when I leave a room, or even move things within the same room. If I am fixing dinner, and there is used silverware scattered around from other meals, I will gather all of them and put them in the sink if I am going to the refrigerator. One huge help to me was buying PVC snap together floor shelves. I think I have eight 4' tall shelves that are lightweight, and can be moved easily when empty. I use them as cat perches (they love to lie in the sun by the window or enclosed porch. I have a room that is an everything room - preps, clothes, cleaning products, books, shoes, extra carpet, beach chairs, etc. These shelves are great for storing boxes/bags of cat food, charcoal, clean bath towels, etc. I highly recommend getting some, as you will now have more space in which to put things, as you are utilizing vertical space and not floor space. You can find them fairly cheaply online. This same "vertical space" shelf thing is also good for counter tops, when "things" are starting to creep all over an area and they don't seem to have a real home. Pet medications, large lint rollers, bags of cat food, plastic containers with mystery items in it. Some of it can go to the big shelves, but some not. Counter top shelves for small items works well. Not that I would know, really, as I don't have any. But I'm definitely working on it. One tip I read is a gem, too. She said to do "groupings" of items on a surface. Even if they are unrelated, keeping things in "bunches" clears up the visual space and makes things look organized. I practice that, also, and it's great.

My house has always been tidy because I consistently pick up after myself. My husband is the same and my children are the same in their homes.
I had four foster children and my home was tidy except for the playroom and it was tidied up before or after the children went to bed.

These are great tips and I think I need to watch again and take notes. 😅
I recently learned that many cleaning routines are based off an index card looping system from a book called “Sidetracked Home Executives” from the 70s-90s. I wondered if you’d heard of it and if you’d ever tried it or would consider trying it.

For getting rid of things, especially sentimental, under a video about KonMari someone suggested taking a picture of the item. I learned from the method to thank things before getting rid of them, and it's helped. There may also be other therapeutic/spiritual methods we'd apply to parting ways with people that may help us part ways with objects.

I actually like organizing things; figuring out where to keep things, etc., so "A place for everything and everything in its place" has never really been a problem for me. MY problem is keeping things clean. Dusting is boring and so is vacuuming, etc. There is one advantage though and that is, when I finally do do some cleaning, I can really see a big difference, and that gives me a wonderful sense of accomplishment.

Let's just do it now so she can get some rest. Self love, that's really all it is. We all deserve a clean and tidy home to live in. Sending you a big warm hug, Ariel. 💌💕🫂💕

tip #1 is what I call “drive by” cleaning. It’s the sort of small task that I can pretend I don’t really notice while i’m doing it, since I didn’t set out To Clean This Area.

I do all of those too! Just to add a few more... I keep a small amount of some item of clothing - it could be socks, or underwear, or Pj's or maybe only a small amount of towels so when I am on the last one I know laundry must be done. This works better for me than having a scheduled day for laundry. I also got away from being upset with other's in my home, who aren't as tidy as me. I figure I like the home to look and be a certain way, but they do not. It is up to me to keep it the way I like it (the common areas). Of course I don't de clutter any of their belongings, instead I have designated spots for their items and they know to look there. If they do decided to de clutter something I always have a donation box at the ready. Another hack is to keep a launch pad where the keys are kept, by the door we use to enter and exit. If a book needs to go back to the library for example it goes on the launch pad. Or if something needs to be mailed or returned it goes there too. Another good tip is I keep a magnet paper list on the fridge with a pen attached. When we are out of something we add it to this note paper. Or if I get an idea for a meal I add it to the list. When I'm going to the store I grab the list and purchase what is on it. Convenience is the trick to all of these. And I also like the motto - if you make it fun it will get done!

ADHD makes clean as you go really difficult. I still try to do it, but I go on a lot of side quests. Or I end up so hyper focused, or behind/late that I leave a mess behind me that looks like a tornado came through. Working on minimizing what I have has significantly helped with messes though, since I have less stuff to manage and get overwhelmed by. Just something to think about and understand about individual people (maybe even yourself) if certain things seem perpetually difficult no matter what you try. You've got to work with the brain you have and that means understanding tips and tricks and accomodations that work for your brain, not the "ideal".

My advice to all is look at what you call clean and tidy and be more practically realistic. The trick is to redefine neat, tidy and clean is to do it without berating yourself. As Dana K. White says "Do the dishes". Also do a load of laundry when ever you see a full one to do. Do not wait until it is up to the ceiling. That includes drying, folding and the ever dreaded putting away. Also the put things away when ever you see something out of place saves oodles of time later. Dana also says to put things in the first place you would think of finding it. My house was never the definition of neat, tidy and clean that we put up on a ourselves but everyone else thinks that it is. It has everything put away and it is neat. inside the cupboards and closets are not perfect but the visible couch and chairs only have the things that they are supposed to on them. Decluttering will happen on a day when I have 5 minutes here and there. Be kind to yourself. It is the only one that you have.
