    You have to remember that Meatloaf and his pals were theater folks, first. They wrote songs that were very theatrical and he assumed a character that acted and sang a part in mini musicals. I think that helps explain a lot!

      Jim Steinman wrote all these songs

  • @ravenstromdans
    @ravenstromdans 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

    Jim Steinman, the songwright who wrote the song and, unless I'm mistaken, the pianist on the song as well, had a gift for crafting musical stories of really kind of dysfunctional love. Meatloaf had a gift for giving those songs *life* in a way other artists rarely managed, though a handful of his song became famous from other artists - "Holding Out for a Hero" and "Total Eclipse of the Heartt" by Bonnie Tyler, "Making Love (Out of Nothing At All)" by Air Supply and even "It's All Coming Back" by Celine Dion.
    But Jimmy and Meatloaf were a thunderously strong duo and their unique energy in the music industry is very much missed.
    Hail the Travelers. Hail the Tale Spinner, Hail the Story Teller. Good Journey, gentlemen.

    • @oliverrimbaud4556
      @oliverrimbaud4556 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Steinman is incredibly underrated! The piano player is supposed to be Roy Bittan, Springsteen’s pianist. He is also amazing, having played in most of steinman’s songs and with dire straits’ third album, Bella Donna by Stevie nicks and a lot more while being in the E street band since Born to Run. I personally like to believe that in terms of integrating technique and style into rock piano, he made as much of an impact to rock music as Billy Joel or Elton John!

    For my European friends: the "Coupe Deville" in this lyric refers to what was Cadillac's most popular model when this song came out. Sure, The Cadillac El Dorado was "nicer" (and more expensive) as were the Fleetwood sedans, But the Coupe Deville was THE car people thought of when they thought of Cadillacs in 1977 (I only bring this up as ""coupé de ville" can be inferred as a specific car body style from ANY make.)

    Meatloaf's was sort of my jam since I first heard him do Bat Out Of Hell. His music always told some sort of story in a very theatrical way. I saw him live three times with gaps of ten or more years between shows He didn't tour the Canadian Prairies that often. He was also a pretty good actor in more than one film and TV roles.
    The last time I saw him live was June 17th 2016 in Edmonton, Alberta he was doing his show which was always pretty theatrical. He had cancelled a couple of shows just before this due to health concerns, and there were questions about whether this show would happen. It did, but he didn't look in the best of shape. He was singing "I'd do anything for love" in his usual dramatic manner when he slowly collapsed on stage while singing. At first it was hard to tell if it was part of the performance or if something had happened, as the band kept playing for a bit before band members and crew rushed to his aid. The show immediately ended, and he was taken to hospital overnight. Suffering from a severe case of dehydration. Made the show even more memorable.
    So, I enjoyed you reaction to this tune.

    While Meatloaf sang the songs, it was Jim Steinman who wrote the songs. Jim also wrote many other popular songs like Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero by Bonnie Tyler. As well as Making Love Out of Nothing at All by Air Supply.

    Just wondering if you have ever seen the movie Rocky Horror Picture Show? Meatloaf has a small but great part that you may also enjoy the craziness of the movie. Although the best way to see RHPS is in a theater with audience participation.
    Love seeing you find new musical interests, facts and your reactions to things that I have taken for granted for many years.

    The first verse is him telling a girl he will never love her. But he wants her and needs her and he has found out that those too aren’t bad by them selves and she will learn it too. The second verse is explaining that he gave away his heart to someone years before that told him that she would never love him and that’s how she learned 2 outta 3 ain’t bad. So now it’s just a vicious cycle that keeps playing on into the future.

    Meat Loaf always had some really fun songs. Loved him in "Roady". He was born in Dallas, TX in '47, so he would have been 16 when Kennedy was assassinated, so it's very possible he was somewhere near Dealey Plaza when it happened. His death being attributed to Covid though might be a bit of a stretch since he died in late January before Covid became a real issue here in the States.
    Fun fact: He was in Rocky Horror Picture Show.

    If you like Meat Loaf, you should check out Bonnie Tyler, a Welsh singer who stylistically is basically Meat Loaf's female counterpart. This is mostly due to the fact that Meat Loaf's songwriter, Jim Steinman had a falling out with him and started writing songs for her, most notably "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "I Need a Hero".

    Giving credence to his stories: He grew up in Texas (JFK killed in Texas), Moved to LA/Hollywood area (Charles Manson era).
    Try the song that put the band in the spotlight (though a long and arduous journey that year) in Bat Out of Hell (full album version - need that intro) Iconic/epic song. A masterpiece by Jim Steinman & Meatloaf.

    I could be wrong, but my perception is that musicians up through the 1980's succeeded because they had tremendous talent. Sometime in the eighties or nineties, marketing and technological help in the studio made more musicians famous because of their looks or celebrity rather than their singing talent. Although of course there continues to be talented singers coming along.

    Yes!!! Not only are listening to one of my all-time favorite Artists, Meatloaf, but you chose my favorite song of his. This is not as easy as it may sound as he has a massive, wonderful discography. "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" is on the first "Bat Out of Hell," album which to me is the perfect record. Not only is every song outstanding but I know them all by heart. I could sing any of them on command which of course never happens, since I sound like two alley cats fighting under a trailer. a perfect follow-up would be "Paradise by the Dashboard Light." I will now watch the video (Yeah, I did this kind of backwards).

    Okay...the entire Bat Out Of Hell album is filled with amazing songs like this, all written by the incomparable Jim Steinman. He wrote a lot of Meat Loaf's songs, including the hugely successful albums Bat Out Of Hell, Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell, and at least half of Bat Out Of Hell III. Steinman also wrote Bonnie Tyler songs "Holding Out For A Hero" and "Total Eclipse Of The Heart", among many others, and wrote the lyrics for the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Whistle Down The Wind. There is a version of the song "A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste" from the musical recorded by Meat Loaf with Bonnie Tyler that is fire!
    I also suggest seeing The Rocky Horror Picture Show, with Meat Loaf playing the small role of Eddie, one of two roles he originated in the Los Angeles Roxy Theater stage production that also starred Tim Curry as Dr. Frank N Furter. Meat Loaf sings a blistering rock song "What Ever Happened To Saturday Night?" in the film. The other role he played onstage was Dr. Everett Scott, a role recast for the movie.
