    I remember in 1996, i was 6 yrs old, my family fled Sarajevo in the war and as soon as the war and siege was over we went back to Sarajevo. At that exact train station with the coca cola advertisment, i remember it lividly. The walls where charcoal black from fires in the war and the whole floor was full with Refugees from all of Bosnia. It left a distinct memory in my head.

    Good job NOT taking the bus, many tourists make that mistake. The coaches you saw at 6:05 are actually old Swedish passenger coaches from the 1970s and 1980s which were donated to us after the war. They actually even look quite good given how old they are. The Talgo train is about 20 years old, on the other hand. We have newer KONCAR trainsets to go to the towns around Sarajevo and back.

    That was an awesome reminder of the Neretva valley scenery. I love the entire section from the outskirts of Sarajevo to Mostar, even by car you will see many of the same views because train tracks go on one side of the gorge, and the main road is just on the other bank of the river. But train is much better than a bus because of the space you get!

    I always feel incredibly smug when I've been to a place before you guys, as it's pretty rare! Fantastic train journey for sure. For the main railway station in a capital city, yes it's eerily quiet! You bought at the ticket office but when I was there a couple of months ago you can just buy it on the train. The train staff are very friendly.
    The early morning train gives the opportunity for a full day trip to Mostar, and frankly it's a day trip destination, although I stayed overnight. (Alas it was pissing down in the evening and the next day.)

    Even funnier - blue train cars on 6:04 are not ex-Yugoslavia, they are ex-Swedish (this corrugated sides are typical of Swedish railway designs, has something to do with snow and ice forming on the sides). They were given I think for free by Sweden after the 1990s wars to restart rail operations, though there was some talk of them having asbestos insulation so it was far cheaper for Swedish railways to give them for free than to pay for their dismantling.

    I took that train to Čapljina a bit further on from Mostar. I don’t know about current situation but the train previously had gone all the way to Ploče on the Croatia coast. Unfortunately the breakup of Yugoslavia and the current political situation Bosnia and Herzegovina prevents other lines from operating.

    • @Aboleo80
      @Aboleo80 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Port of Ploče was created to serve Bosnian Industry in Yugoslavia. Once Croatia gained the independence Bosnia had no access to it any longer. I think the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina has signed a 100 year lease a while ago but since Bosnian Industry has massively declined the port sees very little use.

    Lets get something clear: There is no such a thing in architecture called "communist architecure" 😅
    The Sarajevo railway station, built in 1966, belongs to the modernist architectural style.
    So this style is not communsit but MODERNISM.
    Designed by Bosnian architect Vladimir Zarahović, the building features characteristics of modernism.
    Modernism is known for its functionality, clean lines, and use of new materials and technologies. The Sarajevo railway station exemplifies this style with its simple and practical form, large glass surfaces that allow plenty of natural light, and the use of concrete and steel
    Additionally, the station was designed to be functional and suited to the needs of passengers, which is another key characteristic of modernist architecture.

    Oh, yeah, this is nothing. I mean, these views are 0 compared to let say Jablanica (35 km from Mostar north). That's the place where Tito partisan's beat Germans and Italians and Serbian Chetniks in WW2. Also, Jablanica is the best know for its lamb meat (best in Balkans), they have 10's of restaurants near Neretva river, with best possible views. Now, the Jablanica views are 0 compared to some other views in Balkans. Hmm, where those best views could be, let me see, oh ok, I got it, this is the ride of a lifetime. If you don't like heights, don't go, because the train is riding on the side of the mountains and down bellow are 3 kilometer views. This is more like Grand Canyon type adventure, but the train is interesting, because it is old, Yugoslavian train, you will be transported in 1975. Forgot to say where is that, it is train ride from Belgrade to Bar (Monte Negro). It's very long ride, 11 hours of incredible, impossible to describe views (mostly in Monte Negro of course). Train is Monte Negro Express (not sure how it is 11 hour express though).
