Hah I took up spinning and pretty much learned all the basics from JillianEve's channel. It was her tablet weaving video that got TH-cam to suggest me your video on tablet weaving (which made me subscribe to you). And now you're both in one video, hah. It was really enjoyable to Evie’s-drop (see what I did there?! 😂😂😂) on your conversation with Evie. I could listen to her for ages as she knows so much about hand spinning; it was nice that the conversation moved around naturally just as if I’d sat down with her at one of our Guild meetings… And well done Kristine for being brave enough to do your first spinning - on camera!

Oh, wool cards existed before the metal toothed ones. People would attach a
"carder's" teasel head to a backing and use that. They used the same device for fulling too.
Evie is talking specifically about metal-toothed carders as we use today. A carder’s teasel sounds great fun though! May have to look more into that.

If you like historical fiction books you should read the Circle of Cerridwen by Octavia Randolph set in the early reign of King Alfred and the first book is about a Peaceweaver bride to a Jarl (Viking) she actually makes you think a lot about wool and flax and the troubles of women… I love the whole series.

I'm trying to think how to make carding brushes before fine steel wire. Maybe fish bones? Combs could be made with animal claws.
I think Sally Pointer has some videos about that. ❤️
There's a video I haven't yet watched about making a hackle (for flax processing) with thorns, so my guess is that they would have used thorns. I don't think fish bones would be strong enough but I have heard of fish jaws and teeth being used for processing cotton in India.
In some parts of the world during world war 2 cactus spikes were used as needles to play records. Each needle only lasted about one record but it did enable you to listen to something when you didn't have access to metal record needles. So spikes and thorns are both sharp and durable.
I wear a leather apron when I comb. Just in case I get distracted.

Kristine, I'm a little surprised to see you spinning right handed, or has the camera reversed you?
It's lovely seeing a couple of my favourite crafting creators together.
I spin with my non-dominant hand and I have no idea why, other than it just feels more natural to me.
@@AndyBun: I spin right handed on a wheel (I'm normally left handed), possibly because that's how I was first shown how to do it back in the days when vintage wheels were just wheels. I've tried left handed but I find the right hand struggles at being the fibre hand, although the left is happy drafting.
If and when I try spindle spinning, I'm planning on trying to learn left handed.
@JillianEve what is the length of the distaff you are using in this video?
I u followed because you post so many long online videos that I just don't like and I don't want to remove them all the time but I love all your normal stuff (also no fan of the short form).
Maybe you could make a second account? Or otherwise explain why you don't, thank you
