  • He piloted prime ministers and royalty and later commanded our country's largest air force base in Trenton, Ont. Today, Colonel Russell Williams sits in a prison cell convicted of multiple charges including two murders, sexual assaults and dozens of break and enters. This unbelievable story has captured the country's attention and left people asking the same simple questions: What really happened? Who is the man behind the headlines?
To answer these questions, the team from the fifth estate conducted an exhaustive journalistic investigation over many months as they chased down a multitude of leads, knocked on countless doors and asked many difficult questions of the people who agreed to talk.
In exclusive interviews with those who know him best, host Bob McKeown reveals, in intricate detail, the story of Colonel Russell Williams - career military man, respected community leader, husband and, now, convicted murderer.
    Original airdate : September 24th, 2010

we owe a debt of gratitude to Barker for being vilgiant in noticing the SUV by Jessica's home, then able to put 2&2 together and prompty reporting it to the police. In this case if Russell does not admit to these crimes, does not go to the police station, does not surrender his boot, if he lawyers up, if he just simply walks out...the neighbor gets life without parole. The interviewer/investigator in this case is absolutely top notch. He definitely did his homework.
At 1500 however, russell never had to show up and never had to remain. For these few hours the neighbor hangs in the balance. THAT is the horseshoe toss not covered in this case.

a tip to the women who live alone out there. I once heard someone give this advice years ago when I was a kid... If you're a woman and you live alone go to the thrift store and try to find a pair of used work boots and some used baseball hats. hang the hat's up or you would hang your stuff and put the boots where they can be seen from the front door. even if you have a porch you can put a pair of old work boots on the porch. The purpose of this is to give the illusion to anyone who may come to the door or anyone that comes in that a guy is around or at least comes and goes.

Moment they stopped Russel and saw the tires and vehicle that had been tipped he became the prime suspect. Has nothing to do with belief. It has everything to do with evidence. Why were they after Larry? I have no clue. He was a gun owner and a hunter that alone gains unwarranted enemies to point fingers these days in Canada. Most folks larry's age in the middle class are at home without alibi in the evening and night. Obviously in hind sight all the evidence against Larry was circumstantial and false. But if they had nothing else and no one else to go on then they followed it till they did. Police did their job. The public on the other hand is the public. They always knee jerk and pick sides and jump to conclusions these days.

I think the thing I respect most about Detective Smyth is that hes not phony. Yes, he tried to solve crimes by using guile and techniques, but I honestly do believe he also DOES treat even the suspects he interrogated, the respect that he stated in his interview with Russell Williams.
I know criminals like these probably dont deserve that, but I do admire people that have integrity. Detective Smyth encompasses that.

The thought of someone like this Russell creep crawling into the basement window of my home while my wife sleeps and I'm away... is why, when we got engaged we adopted our first (female)of two German Shepherds from the humane society. A week after our wedding we adopted a second (male) from a different local rescue. No protection training needed for a breed with inherent defensive traits, vast intelligence regarding strangers, and the kind of bark which says- "go knock on another door!"
And while this detective may very well be a badass, it took authorities way too long to catch this guy. And who in the world were these witnesses who were so observant that they noticed the SUV at night in the field? They must've been very familiar with the victims property and, I suppose, the victim. Lucky break you wouldn't want to have to depend on to stop a serial killer ramping up his game. I guess many big cases are cracked with lucky breaks like that. Russ is just whole other level of creepy though. You have to wonder if he's used his authority or fighter pilot notoriety to lure other victims beyond the four in this story to their deaths.
