Just found you guys a couple days ago and have been binging your channel since.
I do not understand why you guys don't even have 50k subs, you're doing a great job. Good, spot on and fair reviews without all the fake nonsense about all the movies I love.
As for "The Ring vs. Ringu", I think this is a rare case where a remake is significantly better than the original.
I have seen The Ring first back then, and all these years heard how "so much better and scarier Ringu is", so I watched it finally and wonder if I watched the same movie as these people.
From overall production quality all the way to the soundtrack, effects and story alterations, and perhaps most importantly, actual horror, The Ring is absolutely superior.
It also dives way deeper into the characters, where Ringu leaves too many things untouched, I feel.

Great review boys...The Ring 2002 is one of the few Hollywood remakes of Japanese/Korean horror movies which I reckon stands up well to the original. I thought likes of The Grudge, Shutter and The Eye were poor compared to the Asian version's.

See, I went the other way, seeing _'The Grudge'_ and _'Ju-on'_ as being closer than _'The Ring'_ was to _'Ringu'_ 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think that building a cabin atop of an old well that you want to keep hidden is actually a brilliant idea. It is creepy as hell. And it is clearly taken from a horror The Changeling-a nice nod to a horror classic. And I agree," less is more" sometimes. But in case of nearly all japanese horrors the "less" is often so glaringly visible that it makes those movies almost hard to watch.

I've been watching horror movies for over 40 years, and I can honestly say that the last 5 minutes of Ringu is the most terrifying thing I've ever seen. It took me three attempts to get through it without switching the telly off. I kid you not!!!

  • @harlequincat

Thanks for this review of both movies. I had the same experience as Gary and Ian, I saw Ringu for the first time on VHS tape late at night. I had never seen a Japanese movie before, and I remember it was hard to follow because of the language barrier and the culture shock ...also the lack of sleep worked ;-). But it was dreadfully scary, the concept of dying of fear with a frozen scream on your face had me question the movie all throughout; How do you die with a face like that? How?? And the long and dragging scene when the husband and wife were emptying the well, it worked for me. That loathsomely slow sequence had put me totally off guard. When I thought they succeeded in putting the soul of Sadako to rest, I felt disappointed in a way, because I thought I was not going to get my answer. But then suddenly the sharp music is back and an uncalled for scene starts. The end of this movie .... well that's how. It was an unforgettable experience.

These movies have elements that worked great back then, the videotape format was common for movies, the bizarre creepy spirit, the pressure of the time limit, and both use their own cultures and style of filmmaking to express many things. Japanese horror films are very good, and the ring made people and Hollywood get interested in Japanese horror productions.

I love Ringu, the first time i watched that was late at night all alone in my room, watching Sadako move as if every bone in her body is breaking...that really left an impression on me!
As for The Ring, i'm really not that keen on this to be honest, Samara looks like a Special Effect, and that absolutely ruins her whole presence for me.
Ringu is a Mystery Psychological Horror masterpiece, whereas The Ring is a Psychological Drama with underpins of Horror.

Dunno about anyone else, but when I was a kid I would sometimes daydream about media, mostly films, doing stuff it wasn’t supposed to. Like, watching movies and suddenly the characters would break the fourth wall or the camera would pan over to something it never had before. Shit like that. So the premise of The Ring does speak to some long dormant fear of mine.

    • @eduardo_corrochio
      @eduardo_corrochio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The ending leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'm assuming the plan is that Rachel will show the tape to someone in order to spare her son's life; the curse or virus has to be passed on to another person. Also, I don't see how the curse has a condition that includes this VCR copying business. If you watch the tape but then make a copy, you won't be doomed within a week.
Frankly the American movie always seems to be coming to an end too many times and then we have even more plot to go through. It's not mentally exhausting but it does induce eye rolling. I like the movie as rule-- especially the score by Hans Zimmer; the film is just a bit flawed. Its atmosphere and creepiness won me over.

One of the rare times were Hollywood made a good remake of foreign horror. The original J-horror “Ringu” is a classic & like most A-horror, very creepy. It’s a lesson in “less is more” horror. Ambiguity is one of the key elements in horror/slasher/creature features/supernatural flicks. Yes the green saturation is annoying, unnecessary & takes away from the movie …otherwise enjoyable. The Ring sequels aren’t that good.

The book of the ring is interesting and enjoyable. I enjoyed the Ring Remake the dark tone, the soundtrack - I was actually impressed. The only thing I wasn't a fan of the remake was the child actor he just irritated me. I always thought it was tight that Noah/Ryūji got killed in the end. I preferred it over The Grudge remake. The Grudge both versions had me scratching my head. Watched the remake first and was like I don't get it and then watched the Original - oh boy I was even more confused lol. The original Ring is good as well. In the book if I recall Samara is a hermaphrodite and was raped at one point.....it's been a while since I read the book and I'm sure Samara in the book had a more darker tone and menace.

American version is a masterpiece. Well-paced,beautifully shot, more entertaining, with better visual effects, better music, better lighting, darker atmosphere. An original Japanese movie is boring as hell, static, poorly executed, actors are bad,and you can actually see the tiny budget they had ,which is always a disadvantage.I get the feeling that a lot of people praise Japanese horrors simply because they are not Hollywood-made...

The actual vhs footage for ringu is super creepy and well done, the American one is pretty cringe
