    I like this song and video a lot but there are a few things that keep it from being a 10/10 for me. First and foremost I'm not crazy about the vocals, and I also think the production/arrangement on the demo was better. It had a house-ier vibe and also a better bridge (which they cut for the final mix). After you've reacted to the whole album maybe check out some of the demos, which are widely available. As for the video, I love the concept and it's executed well, but it feels like it's missing something - I wish there was a second (or different) set or something. It feels a bit cheap being on one soundstage the whole time, especially for a lead single. And the weird color filter doesn't really add anything. The whole Rebel Heart era was odd because the demos leaked months in advance and Interscope didn't handle the situation very well. But some of her best post-Warner songs are on this album. I just don't think it came to fruition the way she intended. The tour is great too though.

    "Rebel Heart" ..everything is in that title...We've seen a lot of the rebel over the years and now we have the vulnerable side and the heart is revealed. The song "Rebel Heart" just tells you everything about how she didn't fit in, couldn't be like the other girls, belonging to a different tribe? being a narcissist....all of which is exactly how a lot of her fans felt growing up... Its just relatable

    This song actually fell flat for me initially, but I really like it now and it's great for working out, but the whole album got a bit of a rocky start with different leaks and a very angry Madonna. I wish some of the songs didn't get a makeover (like the Avicii collaboration Wash all over me th-cam.com/video/9fd1MDnzJ9U/w-d-xo.html ), but I loved a lot of them. My faves: Living for love, Devil pray, Ghosttown (so beautiful), Unapologetic bitch (fun and sassy), Joan of Arc (made me cry), Iconic (fun!), Heartbreak city, Body shop. Wash all over me is so great in the original version, but plain boring in the final cut :( The original should have been on the album. I also wish Borrowed time (Avicii version) would have survived the cut. Such a great song! It would have been a great send off as the last song. Also Best night, S.E.X. (NSFW), Addicted, Graffiti heart (demo version). So many great songs, but they killed the mood of several Avicii collaborations in the final edit.

    Rebel Heart was for me Madonna's last great hurrah. I really loved Madonna but when the millennium hit she just lost it for me. She stopped being a trendsetter and instead clung to the coattails of more modern pop culture idols of the time (Ali G, really???? & Nicki Minaj, just gross & Pharrell Williams). I only truly enjoyed 2 bodies of work from her 2000's onwards catalogue. Confessions on a Dancefloor & Rebel Heart. They to me just felt like more authentic and sincere bodies of work that truly kept the essence of Madonna intact imo. I found everything inbetween just messy and kind of desperate to be relevant particularly American Life, Hard Candy & MDMA. Madonna has always had a shock factor around her and has always been more or less unapologetic for it. It just hit differently later in her career and I found myself cringing rather than applauding. I often think of Kylie and how she has maintained a very lengthy career playing to her strengths, she knows her lane and primarily sticks to it and does it with class and maturity. Madonna unfortunately hasn't aged as well imo and no I'm not referring to her physical appearance I just mean her whole attitude and approach to her career hasn't aged as well for me anyway. She will always be a pop goddess in my eyes largely based on her first 20/30 yrs and it just gets a lot less consistent after that for me personally.

    As on the whole Rebel heart album I think this could have been far better. The demo of this song was better but not perfect anyway. I guess the great piano notes Alicia Keys gave to Madonna were amazing but at the same time they were a problem cause (I suppose) the song was going to sound like a mix of like a prayer and vogue and even when it feels fantastic the truth is it was completely out of time. She was looking for this to sound contemporary. Finally the song was forced to sound like nowadays music, but it's far from the sublime song it could have been. From the demo to the final version you can see Diplo and Madonna tried many things and as the album got leaked on the internet everything was rushed to came out. Its good but I should have been an incredible song because of the melody, the choir, the piano by Alicia Keys and Madonna's vocal performance

    What a fantastic, spirited, uplifting tsunami of a song. It channels that Rebel Heart energy and attitude perfectly. Her performance of this song at The Grammy's was staggeringly good and impactful and brilliant. She set a whole mood that had the audience in awe and amazement. The ultimate performer that leaves everyone choking in her dust. Never repeating herself and always changing and evolving. Although radio stopped playing her songs because she is apparently "too old" she keeps on evolving and challenging herself as an artist and entertainer because no one does it better or with more passion and authenticity than she does. It's just in her DNA and soul. She effortlessly conjures up and creates art that informs and inspires and educates and empowers. That's why she is an icon and in a league of her own and we love her for that.j

  • @deantailor357

    For me this song was a disappointment. After two underperforming and frankly weak albums (Hard Candy, MDNA), this was supposed to be another "Like A Prayer" moment, but it missed the mark on many levels. The song was derivative and she again, was late to the party when in the past she'd BEEN the party. The pre-album leaks didn't help as it kinda took the wind out of her sails. There were better or more catchier tracks recorded for Rebel Heart (Queen, Tragic Girl, Alone with you, Two Steps Behind Me) that didn't make any of the multiple version line ups (another problem) and some of the production was overdone to the point of losing the cohesion of a Pat Leonard, William Orbit, or even Miwais Ahmadzaï. The writing on Rebel Heart was stellar (Ghosttown, Joan of Arc, Devil Pray, Messiah) but the execution was flawed. She wanted to put out a double album but Interscope weren't interested and offered very little in the way of promotion. There was at best, a muted buzz and even falling off stage couldn't resurrect this. In 20 years, the internet generation will "discover" Madonna via this album, but until then, it'll remain a missed opportunity for Madonna to return to her top form.

    • @bridgethegapreactions
      @bridgethegapreactions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great post as usual, thank you! I've been thinking about your Like A Prayer comment all week and I still can't get my head around how what we hear here was supposed to be comparable to Like A Prayer. I'm not saying you're wrong to reference that, just saying that they reaaallly missed the mark if that's what they were aiming for. This song only suffers in comparison with that! I guess you mean the gospel-y backing vocals towards the end? Or maybe it was just supposed to be as big as Like A Prayer? I really like this song on its own terms, but it just doesn't pack an emotional punch, for me.

    • @deantailor357
      @deantailor357 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bridgethegapreactions It was more about timing. This was the first time in a while that she was focused on producing the new music, just for the music. There was no film, or Superbowl to tie into or promote. It was the "comeback" that didn't happen and it was almost given that it would happen. The promotional shots were very similar to those of the post Like A Prayer "Truth or Dare" era and seemed (to use one her own words) reductive. I'm sure it was calculated, she doesn't repeat herself so if she does, it's for a good reason.

    Her performance on the Brit Awards for this song in 2015 is a must see. She is wearing this long cape and accidentally gets pulled down the stairs, falls pretty hard, and gets right back up ironically to sing the lines about watching her stumble and getting back up lol but it was not in any way a stunt. Last minute they had to tie the cape tighter because of the weight it kept falling on it's on, so it was too tight when the dancers cued to pull it off her did so, and she was yanked off the stairs. As expected, she handles it like a pro.
