      metal571 what headset you think is better
      M40x with blue snowball ice
      Shp9500 with blue snowball ice
      G4ame one
      Or another headset without a mic for 80-90 or a 150 headset with a built mic.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +sean milrad M40x junk for gaming. No soundstage. SHP9500 also not good for gaming. Closed back soundstage in an open back. G4ME One is a 558 with a very good attached mic. Highly recommend that one. However you'll need at least some kind of decent mic input since getting good quality out of 3.5mm mics is quite difficult. If you don't want a headset an ATR2500USB with mic arm and pop filter and a 558 will do the trick nicely. Might blow budget a bit but the 558 actually has a wider soundstage than the 600 making it ideal for gaming.

      metal571 so what are your final thoughts.
      G4ame one or the 558 with that mic you listed?
      I know the game one is 160 dollars but how much the headset and mic combo costs (with a pop filter off course)?

    Could not disagree more. None but the very best open backs are better than the SHP9500, imo. Treble and mid accuracy are much better on the 9500 than all but the very best, and imaging and soundstage are certainly better than the hd600 (which sound flat and closed to many people) and basically on par with all but the very best. The accuracy is astounding. :-) Even rtings have them rated higher than most higher tier headphones, and they are way more comfy, as you must know. SHP9500 is indeed an $80.00 miracle. Heck, they are considered by many to be 98% as good as even the HD800S for 1/25th the price, and much less harsh in many respects. The Shp9500 would be praised and respected even more if they were priced at $399.00. People can't get it into their heads that more expensive does not mean better. I believe they are ridiculed by some because they are miraculously inexpensive, so can't be good, but in blind tests they would be better than almost any other open backs including all but the top hifimans and a couple other "luxury" models. It's funny how real blind tests are so rare in the audiophile headphone world. :-)

    SHP9500 has a 50mm driver vs. HD600 & HD650 has 40mm driver. The is no compensation for displacement. ;D
    The 9500's are not 'better' than the HD600/650... but they are among some of the best price/performance cans out there. Philips did an excellent job with these cans.

The 9500/9500s is definitely is a diamond in the rough for performance and price.

      They are buying it for the price, plain and simple. They are amazing for a $60 headphone, but very weak compared to a $300 headphone. The majority of us who are into this hobby do not make purchases solely based on price.

    Problem with the headband/ear pads is sweat takes awhile to dry and since it's made of cloth it can not be wiped off.

    Uh? shp9500 have bad imaging and no soundstage? Maybe the rigs being used with these cans are a factor in this, but I own both hd600 and shp9500, and there is no comparison, the philips do have soundstage whereas the 600's don't. The 600's are not as wide or deep. Also, imaging! The 9500 are not bad at all! I hear good instrumental separation and localization in these cans. Sure, nothing astonishing like hd800, or stax, etc.., but imaging is definitely there, and it is not confused. Also, aside from the bass roll-off issue, which is common to both 9500 and 600, bass on the 9500 is tighter, more material than on the 600. On the other hand the 600 wins in the mid range, more liquid and classy, and the treble is also more controlled and more elegant; the upper midrange (and its emphasis at 4-5K) is the weakness of the 9500 to me. But they still have more air and resolve a tad more than the 600. It is totally true that the 9500's take eq-ing way better than the 600, but that is to be expected; they have a 50mm diaphragm (vs 40mm), and in general a driver that's some 20 years more modern, so bass can be eq-ed really well on the 9500 whereas it easily distorts or gets boomy on the 600.

    I don't know about you but with my Cavalli Liquid Carbon X the SHP9500s sound beyond amazing. Besting both AKG K712pro and my recently returned Hifiman He-560 v2 (balanced). The sound stage and imaging is astonishing and not to mention incredible sub-bass with a bit of EQ. I only wish I bought 10 of these when it was sold for $50. To my ears, it pissed all over the he-560 v2 However, a proper amp is required to maximize the 9500s potential like the Carbon X did for mine.

      It's a cheap open back dynamic headphone. It's going to roll off in the sub bass because that's how physics works, but for this one it's an exceptional amount of rolloff there. Saying it is like an XB950 is dangerously misleading. Also I found the soundstage to be really disappointing on the 9500 personally

    They are outstanding for gaming. Very wide soundstage. Very good imaging.
    On DOOM, they give me goosebumps because you can play them loud without sounding bright or irritating. The negative effect is that I feel vibrations from the drivers when playing loud and it distracts from the experience.

      You're absolutely right, hence why there are no responses. I'm so sick of people saying these have no Soundstage that it almost offends me. When I'm sitting there playing a game and get up because I perceive a knock at the door, how is that not good Soundstage? And I'm not even exaggerating. I literally took my headphones off, went over to the door and looked through the peep hole and no one was there. Kind of felt dumb actually lol.

    As someone who was fortunate to try out a pair of Audeze LCD-4z, the SHP9500 are a great headphone. Sound is subjective, so the fact I enjoyed the experience from a $60-90 headphone versus a $4000 pair speaks volumes.

      @@TheRealChilly yeah that wasn't specific enough. 4Z is worse in grain, especially in the treble, and the stage is not as wide, yet costs the same as the full LCD-4. SHP9500 is fine for $50. The width of the soundstage is not there? Boy, do we ever hear differently! The width was the first thing I noticed. I gave it to my sister and she immediately reversed the cups because she felt the orchestra was behind her rather than in front. No width? Please, listen again.
    As for the rest, I've owned just about every headphone there is over the last 50 years and the Philips is phenominal. If anything it reminds me of the Stax Sigma I owned once in giving a slightly distant perspective with (again) hugely wide soundstage. If I have a criticism of the Philips it's that the treble suckout just before the peak causes a lack of attack or punch in the presence range, leading to a lack of excitement on some tracks, but that conversely has the effect of lending a pleasant smoothness or sheen to the sound, particularly massed strings (I'm into classical). Overall I would rate the Philips as up there with some of the best phones I've heard like the Beyer T1 and T90 , HifiMan HE500, Senn 650 etc. Frankly, your review leaves me totally confused.

The bass is better extended (closed back), but it is much more balanced, and even though the SHP9500 has a boost in the highs, sometimes the CB1s reveal more detail.
    The ONLY thing the SHP9500 does better than the CB1 is comfort; they're extremely light on the head and comfortable, but honestly, the CB1 isn't far behind for comfort, at a cheaper price.

    Hi Metal571! I own a pair of SHP9500(s) for 2 years. I like its fast/transient sounding, but the "confused" sound stage/imaging is definitely a big problem for me. Just comparing with the headphones leveling next to SHP9500 I owned (K701/Q701/K7XX, HD650, DT880), the first thing I notice is SHP9500's treble sounds fuzzy/gritty. It might not be very obvious in music, but definitely shows itself after a short period of listening to TV/Movie/narrative in RPG games. The characters' narrative are confused and mixed around background, all over the place. It is a sense of of accumulated uncomfortable/annoying. A rational implemented headphone like K701 or HD650 will present the narrative in front of you, and the background sound effect around organically. Fortunately, RTing has their measurements on SHP9500. I think the main problem lies in the harmonic distortion. SHP9500 has a level of THD not the same league with K701 series, HD600/HD650 or DT880. www.rtings.com/headphones/reviews/philips/shp9500-hifi-precision-stereo

    Hi, Metal571. 1 month ago i bought a Samson SR950. Great Headphone for the price ($32 there in USA). I foun it far superior to the ATH-M50X. Although the treble is acceptable, only slightly elevated, I wanted a way to tame it a little bit, especially the mid-highs, wich sounds a bit bright in some (few) female voices. After searching, I found a way: Tame the treble with Kitchen Paper Towel in front of the drivers. After several attempts, I believe I have found the perfect point: One ply o towel paper (of the most strong - Brands Scott or Kleenex) with a 4,5mm diameter hole in the middle. You can adjust the size of the hole, depending of the Paper Towel that you are using: a smaller hole if the paper is more permeable or larger hole if it is less permeable.
    Anyway, after the mod, the sound became quite warm, neutral and organic. I compared recetnly the moded SR950 with a Sennheiser Momentum 2 and the Samson was far superior: More detail overral, Much bigger soundtage (almost like an semi-open), more defined bass, more neutral mids and similar, and more detailed treble, being never simbilant.
    It would be great to see you do a review of this headphone, especially after modifying it with the paper towel and comparing it, for example, with the HD600, with is the king of neutrality. Thanks in Advance.

      I have the open back version the SR850, unfortunately they have the most uncomfortable stock pads in the history of headphones. Do yourself a favor and get some HM5 pads, or anything that fits K240s.

    • @Gatominobaldo
      @Gatominobaldo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought the stock pads (velour) comfortable enough. But thanks for the suggestion. I intend to by soon the brainwavz round sheepskin pads. I have the pleather hm5 in another headphone and they are great.

    • @MonkeyPunchZPoker
      @MonkeyPunchZPoker 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They aren't the same pads then. The pads I had felt like something they put on the outside of bumper cars, after 30 minutes it turned them into a medieval torture device. Velour doesn't isolate sound hardly at all, that's probably why yours sound semi open. Other materials definitely would change the sound signature. Here's a video of a guy talking about different pad options for those headphones th-cam.com/video/loCK9DsqeJQ/w-d-xo.html

    I just got them today. Just finished 4 hours of a/b testing with my AKG K550. And to be honest.....there wasnt the OH MY GOD I CAN FINALLY HERE THE MUSIC moment. Is it because the k550 is "so good"? Bought it a few years back and used it since with my 60€ SMSL dac/amp. And was pretty satisfied.
    Now today the 9500 comes in. With a/b testing it feels like the 9500 doesnt even have treble AT ALL. Its crazy. So I dont know if the k550 is just THAT over emphasized in the treble? Or does the 9500 just lack of treble?
    In the bass I cant hear that much of a difference. The k550 seems to have more punch since its closed but the 9500 is more....defined I would say.
    So I also ordered a Fiio E10k and a iFi Nano LE for testing. And.....MAYBE I can hear a suttle difference with the iFi being a bit more spaceous but just a little touch. But nothing worth a $150 more.
    So I probably will stay with my SMSl since its a desktop dac/amp and both of the others are designed for portable use.
    But I still dont know if the 9500 is just lacking of treble or the music just sounds right now and the K550 was crazy over emphasizing. Opinions?
    And the HD600/650 sound really similar? Like....not worth spending another $300 for it? I havent had the chance to listen to them. I fairly new to the hifi game anyway. I was just using my Ultimate Ears 900 since a few years on my HTC One M7 (which is supposed to have a good dac and tbh I couldnt really hear a difference on my SMSL dac either. Except for crazy noise without music, usind an airplance adapter fixed it tho) and now on my Moto Z which only has USB C port and came with a USB C to 3.5mm adapter (i guess the dac is inside the cable?! but theres no electronic, how does it work?) and was satisfied over the years. Now my UE900 broke and I bought quick replacement in form of the ATH E40s and....well they sound different, but I dont know if better? More bass punch but not that defined. I guess theyre just not that neutral as the UE900s.....well....yeah. So far.
    I like them (9500) for their comfort. And I can hear a bit more headroom and soundstage compared to the K550 but honestly no world changing difference as I hear it in almost every review. So now im a bit....confused? Or disillusioned? As I hear everybody talking in so many reviews what they can hear in different dacs and amps and god knows what. Am I just a...bad listener?
    I was planing on buying a pair of M1060s in the future. I guess I have to pre-listen now as Im not expecting the world changing difference in those. Or spending money on a additional dac (Pro-Ject Dac Box S2+ [32bit/768kHz, DSD, MQA,...]) and a balanced class A amp with balanced cables. Whole package would be about $1000. Lets see what CanJam Berlin brings for me....
    Thanks for the review!

      Okay now I watched your review....im quite confused even more. You (and apparently everybody else too?) finde these bright and over emphasized in the treble?? Geez. Now I wonder whats wrong with my K550 or my ears?! Am I deaf already? Hm.

    I just had comparison of SHP9500, AKG K371, and Sennheiser HD58X several weeks ago. SHP9500 is good value, but no comparison to the other 2, other than the sound stage. Upper-mid is recesesed, and with elevated upper-bass(almost 15db difference in FR chart), that resulted in a V-shaped preception(more high & bass than mid). K371 has the best timber, but I cannot stand the narrow sound stage. 58X is the most neutral, even, and sound stage is reasonably good to differentiate the details. Eventually I chose HD58X cuz I also used it for playing my synth, which cannot be EQ'd as the laptop can.

    i dunno for me as one who owns a 9500's, formally a HD600, replaced it the HD650. Its definately does have more harsh treble, not so much harsh but harsher than the hd600s and hd650s. There is a rollof but its something that i dont mind. In an imaginary spectrum its a more centered headphone while the 600s would be flat/wide and the 650s geared to the left. Prob why i replaced my 600s woth 650s. But i do think that maybe overtime the soundstage gets better? To me it doesnt sound like it has much much less soundstage than the 600, 650. hi metal571, do you know about the measurement on rtings (www.rtings.com/headphones/reviews/philips/shp9500-hifi-precision-stereo)? According to this, the 9500 does not have good imaging but has very good soundstage. The same happens to HE400i, which is said on many forums to have narrow soundstage. From close to a decade of reading reviews the very best for gaming in terms of directional and distance accuracy is the ADX line (500X/700X/900X/1000X/2000X). I have the 500X and they are really great (though could use a bass boost). However adding a mic could be a problem (I just use a CAD U37 on my desk). The 9500 does come close, if the 500x or 10/10 I would grade the 9500 9/10 for competitive gaming, and with the detachable cable the BoomPro is a nature fit. I'll link a review of a guy who says the M40x are really good for gaming (I've never listened to them) and also is a natural fit for the BoomPro.
      I would rather have a 9500 and an M40x than one MSR7BK (open back is nice, but sometimes closed is a necessity, plus you have two separate sound signatures), but for only one the 9500 is the best way to go.
      edit: almost forgot to link to the M40x review th-cam.com/video/X6wBv03B1nk/w-d-xo.html

    IMHO best first open back headphones are still Superlux HD330 + Beyerdynamic velor pad . In this configuration they cost around 50 euro/dollars, and you can mod the crap out of them. They are very easy to disassemble and change everything inside.

    I'm still relatively new to headphones, but have been listening a lot (in stores and to one's I've owned - which have included B&O H6, AKG 553, Fostex T50 MKIII, Philips X1, Fostex TH-XOO's, Audeze iSine 10's, and a couple others). In-store I've listened to many more, usually briefly, including some really high-end cans like Audeze LCD's and Focal Utopias. Haven't had a lot of time with any of those, but have had a taste, and a few (like the Utopias) I was able to sit and listen for a little while to a few kinds of music with. Anyway, the point is that, while I'm not a headphone or hi-fi expert, I have had a bit of experience at this point, and based on my experience I feel that the soundstage on these is epic. Maybe not necessarily from a critical listening point of view in music, but certainly in terms of surround-sound-like effect. When watching movies/tv with these I literally jumped and looked behind me for the longest time (until I got used to it) when there was dialogue/effect happening behind or to the side of me. So I was really confused to hear Metal say soundstage was poor and not recommend these for gaming. I think he may be confusing imaging, separation, and soundstage a bit (I'm sure he knows the difference, but just ito of his speech here). I agree these don't have the best imaging, and that separation is so-so, lacking some tightness and clarity, but soundstage, ito the sensation of being immersed in the music and having it come from all around you (even if the sound itself isn't super tight and accurate), to me seems phenomenal. Would like to hear everyone's opinions, especially from those with a lot of experience in the hobby. Maybe I just haven't heard the right cans? Or haven't spent enough time with the high-end ones? But to me soundstage on these (though not imaging or separation) still seems excellent, and not just for budget cans. There is a lot of air (which I think of as a related thing), and I definitely have the sense of music being open and coming from all around me (though I do tend to notice it most with movies and dialogue). Honestly, my opinion about these cans is that (while I would tweak a a few things, and skew them little more neutral and little up in the bass, like he also seems to feel), I generally like the sound signature, love the soundstage, but just want faster attack/decay and crisper, tighter, cleaner, more accurate and analytical sound - basically a similar thing with higher end drivers. In other words, maybe closer to the HD600's, but without giving up the more open, immersive, and relaxed quality that I (and not Metal, apparently) seem to feel that these have. Am I the only one?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, still sounded like a small soundstage to me, wasn't just imaging that wasn't good but also the soundstage width. I don't know, my test songs I run through all headphones made it pretty obvious. I wish I could get at least 3 units of each headphone I review to see if there's any variation, because sometimes that can skew the reviews.

    • @Abbbb225
      @Abbbb225 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      metal571 hey, thanks for the reply. I suppose it could be the individual set. Do you think it's also possible that something like soundstage is just subjective based on the shape of someone's ear and the structure of their auditory nerves, Etc.? I know people are saying his reviews are less critical, which in some ways I agree with, but Z also praised their soundstage, thought they'd be great for gaming, and definitely thought they had more width than the 600's.

    • @charliebrown3082
      @charliebrown3082 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know about gaming but for music the shp9500 is way better than hd668b even with upgraded pads/mods. Zeos talked about the ultra wide Soundstage on the hd668b,I'm not an expert, but I did not hear it. I also think the Soundstage is pretty good on the 9500's but certainly not very wide.

  • @jordohayes
    @jordohayes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't agree with you at all on the Soundstage. For gaming, these have been by far the best headphones/headset (pairs amazing with the VMODA BOOM PRO) I've owned for position cues, etc. (I've gamed on several known gaming headsets through the years, and my loved Creative CALS (for when I needed an okay, closed headphone for lan parties)). With the 9500, I always know where an enemy is placed and on which floor (in Overwatch and Destiny, these are god mode). That said, I haven't gamed with 600/650s or X2s (know for soundstage). I'm now starting to compare my 9500 to my Z7s and m1060 to see which can reigns supreme in games. Two Qs 1) Which games if at all did you play these on and did you use anything to provide surround sound (like an astro) 2) Can you recommend a better headphone for soundstage?

    • @seanmilrad1634
      @seanmilrad1634 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jordan Hayes do you think the m40x with a vmoda mic will be better than shp9500 with blue snowball ice?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd sooner buy a Samson Go than the blue snowball. M40x is pointless for gaming...

    • @jordohayes
      @jordohayes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Sean, you are looking at two completely different experiences here. The m40x are closed cans, where the shp9500 are open. For soundstage, opens are king (though some closed cans are good). The increase soundstage will make it tremendously easier to get an understanding of where enemies are at AND just how far away they are. Closed cans really jam everything together so distance to me is harder to pull out. The distance between objects in games matter (games tend to lower the volume to give you assumptions of separation/ distance (and to what degree), but they are not 100% best).
      If you need a headphone that has to block out all noise (can't hear anything in the room and nobody can usually hear what you're listening to) then the m40x are worth your consideration. If you are not going to play in a noisy environment, don't care if others hear your sounds/music/anything...then the shp9500 are damn hard to beat for the price (Newegg just had them for $50 bucks).
      Caution for the m40x: The 3.5 input I believe is unique to that headphone and I'm not sure if a standard 3.5 will fit. The vmoda boom might start to insert but may not make full contact. Any closed headphone you may want to purchase, I would look for a standard 3.5 input. Some mods can make the 3.5 doable or you may get the connection to work, however, it may also be unstable or easy to pull out - just a word of caution.
      If I was in your shoes and you can do open, the 9500's are just so, so good to begin your adventures with. Music sounds great given its pricepoint too :)

    • @seanmilrad1634
      @seanmilrad1634 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jordan Hayes i know that open back gives better sound stage.
      I play on a room with not a lot of noise so i prefer the open back for better sound stage.
      I saw the hd558 got a better one so i thought about spending more on a headset and buy the vmoda boom pro instead the blue snowball ice.thank you very much for responding.

    • @jordohayes
      @jordohayes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I remember right the 558's can't use the vmoda. I also prefer the 9500 over the 558 and 598s. The price difference, though not huge, is IMO totally not worth it. 9500...go go go! ;)

      Zimtron Well obviously these won't beat a $600 headphone. But SHP's soundstaging has very good depth compared to $150 - $200 headphones such as HD 558, ATH M50. In fact, when I spent that $150 on the m50, it felt like my investment didn't bring huge upgrade in sound quality. It definitely sounded better than the SHP due to calmer treble but I ended up returning it
