Heya mate. I’m a games art student and we are just getting into 3D work and substance is what we are up to now... your tutorial is hands down THE best for a beginner that I have found to date (I’ve looked at a LOT) just wanted to thank you for this and you earned a subscriber :)
Woah! Thank you so much :D I'm so glad you found it useful. It took me a lot longer to make this video than expected, so hearing your praise has made it totally worth it! What other software are you learning and is there anything in particular that you are looking to learn?
Hey bud! Sorry for the delay in replying! Just had to turn in my first ever 3D model so was busy! 'm learning Maya, substance and Zbrush. As far as tutorials I'd love to see Maya would deffo be a BIG one. I'd love to learn how to take a 2D silhouette and turn it into a 3D shape, and also how to create more organic shapes, swirls and spirals etc.
Thank you for this Iain - finally I felt I could get my head around SP! The Allegorithmic videos, whilst being thorough, are dauntingly detailed and rather a put-off when, as you say, the trials last only 30 days. I liked the way you just went into a project with the beginner in mind. I would like to see you do more beginner videos like this, and might I suggest you take them a bit slower with explanations of all your adjustments - you got a bit carried away towards the end! I'd also like to suggest you do a video of something like a stone statue - plenty of opportunity for creating weathered/blackened textured etc. Anyway, well done and again, many thanks!
Thanks David, I'm glad you found this video helpful. I'm sorry if I went a bit too fast in places. I ended up doing multiple takes a few times, so I was growing weary by the end! haha A stone statue is a good idea! I've been very busy since I made this video, but when I find some time I will bear your suggestion in mind
4:20 I guess you can just press Shift and Alt together and Left mouse button in the direction where you want to view. That helped me get the straight view I needed.
Thank you so much for this! I felt like I finally understood the tools. Other videos go way too in depth about things for a beginner level and this one kept it simple and to the point! Really appreciate it!
Thanks Kayla! Yeah, I hear ya on things being so long winded for beginners. I prefer to just learn as I go and wanted to make this video for others like me :D Glad it worked out for you!
Weirdly I enjoy that you're not that coherent with this tutorial. It makes you realize that professional people are just people rambling on, doing the best they can.
So how can we turn on defuse color in marvelous designer , a material created inside substance designer is't working in md can you make tutorial on that problem
fantastic work. Thanks so much for this tutorial. I understand the substance painter workflow fine now. would love to see a 3D modelling tutorial on your slick looking speed bike!!!! preferably using blender...
Thanks :D I'm not too familiar with Blender I'm afraid. The basic modelling principles apply to most 3D packages though so maybe it could still be helpful to you if I did! Thanks for your suggestion, I'll bare it in mind for my next tutorial
awesome demo man, I'm learning 3d graphics and such and it was very helpful . quick thing, you might want to work on the audio in future vids though, there's a lot of sibilants and they're piercing my ears. a quick de-esser plugin or even just removing a bit of frequencies around 5kHz-8kHz with an eq will do it for you. anyway, thanks for the vid, you've earned yourself a subscriber.
One of the best quick Intros to Substance Painter out there, if not the best. Great job! (Would be perfect if you didn't have some back and forth at some point later in the video.)
Hi Ian, great tutorial thank you,........there`s probably way too many questions in my head at the moment but how do you create and apply your own graphic......like your `Love Hawk Rainbow`??
Hey, no problem! How I did the decals was make the images in Photoshop then export off both a colour/diffuse and a black and white alpha. In Substance, you can then assign the alpha to a default brushes' alpha chanel, and the diffuse to the diffuse slot in the material. Then you can paint the image onto a blank layer on the model. Remember though that because it's a blank layer, you won't be able to make adjustments to it once it's on the model (bar masking scratches out of it). So it's worth playing about with the settings to get the look right before you put effort into placing it correctly. You can also add height and gloss to it to make it look more like a sticker :) You can also save the presets as a tool if you ever want to use it again. Hope that helps!
Hi, when i import file form Maya its coming in one layer, i have given different material to every object but still its coming in one layer, can u help me to fix this problem.
Hi there, Do you mean one TEXTURE SET? Or one Layer in the Layers tab? When you export an obj or fbx from Maya with multiple Materials they should be displayed in the TEXTURE SET LIST. Then you can switch between the materials from there, hope that helps. You can also check out the official video on sinstancing if you need to move substances between the layers th-cam.com/video/5piSS1JSp5Y/w-d-xo.html
Hi, sorry you are having trouble. The part that I skipped was just me doing the same thing I just showed you but for each object in the mesh. So the Wall has it's own folder, as does the floor, and the rail. I skipped out you having to watch me do the same thing I just did over and over. Feel free to ask me any questions though and I'll try to help you out :)
It could be because your baked maps are too low resolution. Or possibly, you just need to scale up the resolution of the textures in the TextureSet Settings. It's often faster to work at a lower resolution and then scale it up to see how nice it is at a higher res later. So perhaps you scaled it down and forgot to put it back up? The smart masks and other edge wear generators are often not very sharp at low resolution. So a lot of the finer details won't show up/look great in a game model for example.
i am new here.. so i have one question that you imported low res model and at starting when you go for bake you did not import any high poly model.. you run bake process without importing high res. and after that i see that thats work ao detail coming without importing high res in baking setting.. How ?? in xnormal we import both high and low res model for baking detail.. its necessary.
There is an option to use your high poly model in the Baking box, under "High poly parameters". If you have a high poly model then that's great, but you don't need one as you can paint on details with custom alphas etc. It's up to you though.
This may be a dumbish question but still I'm gonna ask. Can you work with more than 1 different meshes in substance painter? Or to be a bit more clear: is it possible to have more than just 1 UV in SP workflow? Thanks in advance! I'm asking this because I've seen people are texturing huge characters with many parts..
Hey, that's not a dumb question at all :D You can bring in a mesh with multiple materials if you like. They can be either on seperate meshes or just applied to certain faces of the model. Just make sure that the materials are applied and names to the right polygons or meshes in your 3D software before importing to Substance. The different materials will appear in the Texture list in Substance when you've imported the model/s
Hey man, sorry to be the dissonant voice here but I found your tutorial very hard to follow. The video resolution is not good enough to make the text readable, the audio is off-sync, you`re not always really clear on what buttons you are clicking, sometimes you hover the mouse cursor over all of them before clicking one (like in 9:43) and almost all the time you just keep moving the cursor everywhere making it very hard to follow what you are doing. At 11:58 you just cut the video and there are a lot of new layers and you just go on about them like it doesn`t matter at all, but the folowing explanation will not work without that layer configuration. Somethings like moving the light around to show the specular reflection you don't even say how to do it. For a "Basics" tutorial one would expect clearer explanation on how to do stuff like this. It's kinda pointless to make a short 20 minute tutorial if you have to go back 5, 6 times every minute before understanding what`s going on.
Old video, I know. But I agree. Like he says, he has the windows customized to his preference, and is clicking left and right, not saying what he is doing. Not much of a "basic" tutorial if 80% of the info is still not conveyed.
Gotcha! Firstly it looks like you have two materials applied to the model when you exported it. That's why the legs of the table are dissappearing when you paint on the top. Secondly your UVs are definitely overlapping/you haven't unwrapped it yet. Check out the model I supplied to see how the UV sheet should be set up. Each plane/group should be unwrapped and placed into it's own section the sheet. www.mediafire.com/file/9pt6aniho2c5crc/Steps.fbx Here's an a quick example of how it should look img-new.cgtrader.com/items/634849/026f62a12d/bedside-table-set-1-3d-model-low-poly-max-obj-3ds-fbx-blend-mtl.jpg As for exporting correctly from Cinema4D with a single material, I can't help you, but I'm sure a quick Google search can ;) Good luck!
You can bake those directly in Substance Painter. If they aren't already listed in the TextureSet Settings then you can hit the little plus icon next to the Channels to add them. Hope that helps!
Cheers! I'm glad you liked it. Is there anything specific you'd like to see/learn? Would you like to see some Maya tips? Photoshop tips? Or just more Substance? Let me know and I'll see what I can do!
Nope, just the textures. It can also export to most image formats, not just png You presumably have the model already. otherwise you wouldn't be able to texture it :)
Very nice! I have a question. What 3D Software did you use to create your models, and did you create your uv map on your 3d software, before opening it in substance painter? I noticed that when you clicked bake textures the uv was already neatly arranged. Thanks!
Thanks! Yes, I had already unwrapped the UVs in Maya before going into Substance Painter. Substance Painter is purely for texturing and doesn't offer any mesh manipulation at all. What 3D software do you use? Would you find it useful to see a tutorial on setting up UVs for Substance? Having said that, there is already some great videos for that on the official Allegorithmic TH-cam page th-cam.com/video/2NFXuFQYjvo/w-d-xo.html
Hello, I mainly use 3DS Max in creating my objects and scenes. Let me check If I got it right, first I model/create my objects, 2nd I unwrap the UVs in 3ds Max or in other 3D softwares that I use, then I'm good to go in importing the model into substance painter? Oh yeah, will importing my models as .obj be more easier for substance painter? And Yes, I would find it very useful to see some tutorials for setting up UVs in Substance. Finding this video was gold thanks for this! Never knew about this before. Thanks!
Yep, you have to do all the preperation for the model in Max/Maya/Blender first. I'll start planning a video to cover that when I can. OBJ's and FBX's are both fine to work with in Substance :)
Does that still happen if you apply a smart material? If it doesn't then you probably have black mask on your layer, which would mean nothing with show. Also have you unwrapped the UVs for your model?
Try just dragging the material into the layers and then paint on the mask. Also it looks like you haven't baked the ambient occlusion map yet. It's best to bake the textures first before you start painting stuff.
ah! haha, that's me doing it by hand in Sketchfab. There's some weird hacks to get it to work in Sketchfab but I didn't have time to figure it out. As for Substance, there isn't an opption as far as I know. You can do it in Maya and Zbrush but then you wouldn't get the same lighting without extra effort!
oh! as in actually just move the camera! I thought you meant rotate it around for display. Sorry, That's something I totally missed! They are the same controls for a few other 3D programs so I just assumed people might know it. Good job for finding out though :)
If you mean tumbling the 3D view :: alt + mouse LEFT = rotate alt+ mouse MIDDLE = pan middle mouse SCROLLING = zoom in & out Maya is the same, as is Unreal Engine, but in there the 'alt' key isn't necessary.
indeed! haha. Depending on what you want to use the model for, you may not have go too crazy with the unwrapping. For games its good to take your time on it and really get the most from your sheet. The good thing about Substance Painter is that if you notice a certain part isn't detailed enough, you can change the UVs, reimport the model, and Painter with automatically update the textures to fit the new UVs. With the exception of any non procedural details like symbols or bolts etc. Those might have to be redrawn. I changed the UV's and high poly model multiple times when textureing my hover bike :D
Yo dude! Thanks for this tutorial, it's been really helping me out today. Just a quick question though... I get as far as when you apply the rough steel material to the railing but for me the material just comes out black. Seems to be the case for any metal materials I try to apply, like I get the texture and the glossiness but it's like the IOR is really low or something and it just comes out as a black glossy material. Any thoughts? Cheers Iain! :)
Hey Kraig! Sorry to hear you are having some problems there. Have you tried adjusting the size of the Testure set in the TextureSet Settings? by default I think it goes to 512, so maybe putting that up to 1024 or 2048 might help. Another possible reason may be Output size of your Baked Textures. Again, it defaults to 512! I usually just put that up to 2048 or even 4096 if it needs it. It improves the quality of the maps and you don't have to export them that size when you are done so it's fine to bake them higher. Other things to check are that the UV's have enough space on the sheet, and that the "diff" button is ON in the Material viewer (sometimes it gets click off by mistake). I hope that helps! Let me know if it doesn't and I'll try help you further. Cheers!
Iain Gillespie hey man, thanks for the reply. It' more that on the actual 3D view I only get black materials with metallics rather than it being a problem with exporting. If I put just a coloured diffuse material on it it seems fine (as in if I put a red material on it actually looks red) but anything that should look like metal just looks black. Weird!
hah, no worries! I thought it must be the same person. Either that or someone with the EXACT same problem. If you are still having the problem, could you send me a screenshot of your Substance screen? I may be able to spot whats up then!
as in it's not an option in your materials? It may be that for some reason there is no defuse/base color in your TextureSet Settings. You should be able to add any type of map you need from there
hard to see how you use the *select* tool to paint uv's. you seem to have got carried away with making noises instead of showing us how you would paint or fill the selected uv's.
Sorry to hear you are having trouble. What is it exactly you are having trouble with? I make a Fill Layer and then give it a Black Mask, then I paint on the mask with a brush or use Poly fill.
I am trying to isolate some UV's so I can paint just on them and not the rest of my model. I have read other peoples replies to this question on SP blogs and all the answers are muddled.
@ 9:55 you give the strong impression you are going to use the poly fill tool to mask parts of your mesh so as to paint a different colour from the surrounding polygons. but you do not do this. I made my comment because I am not able to use either the mask created when you hit the T key nor can I use the polygon select tool.
I see. I tell you at 10:35 what each of the fill options do. If you want to select a few polygons on a model then use the polygon fill. If you want to fill an entire mesh then use the object fill and so on. Perhaps you haven't got the mask selected when you are trying to fill an polygon?
I know this am I have tried it only to find when I paint in my selected UV's the surrounding UV's get painted as well. I have not seen any one use this feature successfully. you say it is your favorite tool but you do not use it.
Thanks! I hadn't planned on any more videos just yet as this was mainly to share tips it with other artists at work :D Let me know if there's anything specific you'd like to see and I'll see what I can do!
Great tutorial but if this is for beginners you need to teach like we are 5. You went so fast and didn't explain what you were clicking on or what you were clicking on. But if I knew this program already I would say again great tutorial.
Hey, sorry that I didn't mention navigation in this. As I said. ALL of that stuff is covered in the official tutorial videos, so all you have to do is go look. The navigation is the same as Maya and probably a bunch of other 3D tools. So it might be worth you learning those things before you get to substance painter. If you can't navigate around in 3D software then you probably can't model, which means you probably won't have anything to texture. Hope you find what you need elsewhere x

Allegorithmic videos are annoying. There is nothing to go in depth about: The guy just repeats everything like 100 times to make a video last over an hour.
now this is a proper substance painter tutorial
Thank you so much
Heya mate. I’m a games art student and we are just getting into 3D work and substance is what we are up to now... your tutorial is hands down THE best for a beginner that I have found to date (I’ve looked at a LOT) just wanted to thank you for this and you earned a subscriber :)

A stone statue is a good idea! I've been very busy since I made this video, but when I find some time I will bear your suggestion in mind
Great tutorial, thanks. But... next time you could record in higher resolution so we could read text from the screen. thx
Thanks! Yeah unfortnately by the time I realised it was only recording 720p I'd already done most of the video! Next time though!
It was 2016 - the maximum resolution was 720. Oh my god, people.
4:20 I guess you can just press Shift and Alt together and Left mouse button in the direction where you want to view. That helped me get the straight view I needed.

how have i lived without knowing this program existed 0o0
Thank You for this simplified start-up. I am exactly as you said - time restricted, so I was looking for video like this one. Appreciated.
That's great! I hope this video helped :D
Thank you! Do you have plans of doing the series of videos about substance painter?
Thanks! Glad you enjoed and found this useful.
I do have some plans :) Just need to find some time!
You press alt+shift to straighten the UV's up in the view.. Great vid!!
ah! yes!
Thanks for the reminder!
I found that out not long after I posted the video but I haven't updated it with an annotation! I'll do it now :D
fantastic work. Thanks so much for this tutorial. I understand the substance painter workflow fine now.

One of the best quick Intros to Substance Painter out there, if not the best. Great job!

You can also add height and gloss to it to make it look more like a sticker :)
You can also save the presets as a tool if you ever want to use it again.
Hope that helps!
Can we use the provided model in projects? Thank you.
Thank you for the tutorial. We need to read the screen though......... 1920x1080 Will try to work through this.

Hi,
one layer on layer tab, when i export an obj or fbx maya with multiple materials its not coming in substance, its coming only one material only.
Yes, only one texture text only coming. i exported an obj and fbx from maya with multiple materials but in substance its not coming properly
No clue how you manipualted the ground with brushing past min 14 cuz of the foldering
Hi, sorry you are having trouble.
The part that I skipped was just me doing the same thing I just showed you but for each object in the mesh.
So the Wall has it's own folder, as does the floor, and the rail. I skipped out you having to watch me do the same thing I just did over and over.
Feel free to ask me any questions though and I'll try to help you out :)
i can't understand one thing... i never get the same scale and quality when i use the smart masks for the edges....

How ?? in xnormal we import both high and low res model for baking detail.. its necessary.
There is an option to use your high poly model in the Baking box, under "High poly parameters".
If you have a high poly model then that's great, but you don't need one as you can paint on details with custom alphas etc. It's up to you though.
you should be able to hold shift when rotating the UV view and it will snap.
Thanks! I've actually been half heartedly trying to annotate and correct this part of the video for ages. haha I'll give it another go now
This may be a dumbish question but still I'm gonna ask. Can you work with more than 1 different meshes in substance painter? Or to be a bit more clear: is it possible to have more than just 1 UV in SP workflow? Thanks in advance! I'm asking this because I've seen people are texturing huge characters with many parts..
Hey, that's not a dumb question at all :D
You can bring in a mesh with multiple materials if you like.

Great quick start tutorial. It gives me another reason to get Painter. Cheers.
That was my aim! Glad you found the vid useful :)
Thanks Iain for your tutorial. Hope u brings us more ! Really Good !! Cheers Hope Life treats u well!
When I paint the texture why it randomly paints all over the model and not just in the area i'm painting
It sounds like it could be that your UVs are overlapping. Either that or you've forgotten to unwrap them! :)
Thanks, I am using Cinema 4D, how do I export and import my model so Substance recognizes the different parts because my model is 1 object
Gotcha!
Firstly it looks like you have two materials applied to the model when you exported it. That's why the legs of the table are dissappearing when you paint on the top.

Good luck!
very helpful tutorial man! i really hope you could also do basics for substance designer.thanksss
Thanks :D
I actually haven't really used Designer much. Maybe one day though!
Could you please explain how to obtain the position and thickness maps please! I'm lost on what program I should use to achieve those
You can bake those directly in Substance Painter. If they aren't already listed in the TextureSet Settings then you can hit the little plus icon next to the Channels to add them. Hope that helps!
You've done a great job, my man! Subscribed in hope that you'll do more like this. Thanks!

so substance painter only creates the texture (.png), doesnt export the model with the texture?
Nope, just the textures. It can also export to most image formats, not just png
You presumably have the model already. otherwise you wouldn't be able to texture it :)
Sorry I'm new to 3D and hadn't tried to see if opening in Max the textures would apply correctly.

Yep, you have to do all the preperation for the model in Max/Maya/Blender first. I'll start planning a video to cover that when I can.
OBJ's and FBX's are both fine to work with in Substance :)
Oh sweet! Thanks again!
Thank you i learn lots of thing from this video.. I m beginner in substance painter..
Pls help i wonna paint my model wich materials and this not work.Just nothink heppened
Does that still happen if you apply a smart material?
If it doesn't then you probably have black mask on your layer, which would mean nothing with show.
Also have you unwrapped the UVs for your model?
Maked same how u.But for me not work.Just not painting materials
prntscr.com/eiae74 Just try paint.But .....
Try just dragging the material into the layers and then paint on the mask.
Also it looks like you haven't baked the ambient occlusion map yet. It's best to bake the textures first before you start painting stuff.
i used more 3 version programs
Real nice job. Look forward to more if you make em.
Thank you!
Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see and I'll see what I can do :)
man I wish the res was higher cant see the details
How do you pan the camera around the environment?
ah! haha, that's me doing it by hand in Sketchfab. There's some weird hacks to get it to work in Sketchfab but I didn't have time to figure it out.
As for Substance, there isn't an opption as far as I know.
You can do it in Maya and Zbrush but then you wouldn't get the same lighting without extra effort!
I found it. Press Alt + left/right/middle mouse.
oh! as in actually just move the camera! I thought you meant rotate it around for display.
Sorry, That's something I totally missed!
They are the same controls for a few other 3D programs so I just assumed people might know it.
Good job for finding out though :)
How the hell do you move the Camera around sounds stupid but for me it legit wont turn
If you mean tumbling the 3D view ::
alt + mouse LEFT = rotate
alt+ mouse MIDDLE = pan
middle mouse SCROLLING = zoom in & out
Maya is the same, as is Unreal Engine, but in there the 'alt' key isn't necessary.
Thx mate!
do your models have to be UV Mapped before using the program??
Yep, they do :)
Well, crap XD got a lot of Unwrapping to do then.
indeed!
Thanks this was helpful! Still not sure if i'll be buying Substance but this is enough to get me going on the trial version
You could make a student account and get an educational license!
Great overview - thanks so much! Exactly what I was looking for :)
Excellent tutorial! Thank you!
Hmmm... What studio do you work for??
Bossa Studios in London
Weird!
Sorry, I don't know why but replying on my phone used my Google+ username (or some Google username). The last reply was also me :)
hah, no worries! I thought it must be the same person. Either that or someone with the EXACT same problem.
If you are still having the problem, could you send me a screenshot of your Substance screen? I may be able to spot whats up then!
great tutorial my friend
Thank you mate
Cool tut, cheers dude!
Great video. Many thanks.
Very cool. Great tutorial. Thanks. :) Also, that Love Hawk logo reminds me of the logo for Caldors. :P
Thank you!
haha the logo sure is similar. I love that 70's style :)
Indeed. Brings me back to my childhood. Love it.
I don't have diffuse
as in it's not an option in your materials?
That was awesome! Thanks buddy!
Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it and I hope it was useful to you :D
Yea man! Keep it up! :)
Thanks!
Subscribed =) hope to see more
Thanks! I hadn't planned on any more videos just yet as this was mainly to share tips it with other artists at work :D
Let me know if there's anything specific you'd like to see and I'll see what I can do!
Very useful, thank you very much.
On my mobike device, I have a hard time seeing anything, but thank you for tutorial
Thank you very much for this video
thank you
that vehicle from the beginning, if anyone's riding it, and made a hard brake, he or she's gonna smash their head very hard on hard pointy edges.
You should have recorded more
Excelente Saludos !
Are you Rage Nineteen?
Nope, I am Iain. a.k.a Gillespionage
Great tutorial but if this is for beginners you need to teach like we are 5. You went so fast and didn't explain what you were clicking on or what you were clicking on. But if I knew this program already I would say again great tutorial.
@11:55 haha thumbs up for this tut
haha Thank you so much :D
awesom
umm... navigation controls? anything about that? no. ok. very cool BASICS indeed.
Hope you find what you need elsewhere x
good job dude, you made me confused af
keep up moving on

yusshhhh!!!
Allegorithmic videos are annoying. There is nothing to go in depth about: The guy just repeats everything like 100 times to make a video last over an hour.
Please, don´t do another "tutorial"!
lol
I agree totally. That was the worst... horrendously bad.
