This camera is the best purchase in 2022 for its money! I just have found one with only 2,5k shutter count for just 1300$ on eBay! That’s insane! Best deal!
I know this video, and the camera itself, is 9 year old now, but I'm getting a used D4S as they are now available for about £600-£700, which is a steal! I think the reason Nikon avoided the touch screen is that it would have reduced the reliability, or otherwise impacted the usability (accidental touches etc.). Great series, really appreciate the time you both have put into this and especially the 7h tutorial set. Thank you! :)
Just had one put aside for me :) cost 550 pounds!! has 200k shutter! but the condition was crazy! like new with box! the original owner had two and clearly looked after them!! i just need to pay off 400 and its in my hands :) I have been using a D3 for years and just LOVE using the pro range! I have done stuff day and night! all temps!! never an issue :)
Tony, Nikon should give you a new D4S for giving such a professional preview. You are a very good speaker and seem quit comfortable in front of the camera. I would be more likely to by a D4S now that I have seen you preview instead of watching the sub-par previews from other channels. Thank you for doing such a great job!
Nice informative review... particularly valuable to those of us just waiting around for delivery... I don't want to be tethered... but then, I never upload live. I'm not personally a fan of touch-screen, so that's fine with me. USB2 is definitely a downer.. but then, I don't download directly from the camera... Well done Tony!
What one should I buy the Nikon D4s or D810 for overall photography? I like to shot in low light, back light, etc, I don't care about video that much, I do mostly still shots, not much action shots.
A very nice minor update from D4 and I'm not too critical of the disappointments :) It appears to me that Nikon has added as much stuff as possible that can't be addressed by accessory, leaving those few missing nice-to-haves that can be addressed via accessories.
The feature Ive wanted in my nikons for years (and canon apparently read my emails to nikon) is starring of photos. I shoot sports/news/event and it would be great to cut image selection out of my post process so I could get to my clients faster. For now it is just locking an image to mark it...
I sort of agree on the touch screen. To me, I love as many physical controls as I can get. Looking at the photos and changing focus would be cool, but I'll only make the jump to touch screen if there is still physical controls on the camera.
I don't agree with the fact about lower MP on these high end camera. Unless you have any supporting prove? I believe the lower MP is mainly due to the technical constraints. First, to achieve more than 10fps with large megapixel seems not possible as of now. You probably need ultra high buffer in the camera to maintain certain period of continuous shooting. Secondly, these camera requires to operate in ultra low light environment. Low MP is required to maintain the high ISO performance. I don't believe there is any constraint in the workflow with high MP file. With such computing power of PC and high speed interface nowadays, 36MP shouldn't be a problem at all. We can hardly drive the computer to its limit by just processing photos. Furthermore, extra detail is always welcome (if possible) not only to the amateur, although it is not the most important spec that we should look into.
excellent video Tony - right on - DS4 super for studio work on portraits - the pros know that for skin tones MP is not what counts - and these will be mostly on a tripod or indoor in a nice studio -
"pro`s only" ? I`m only an enthusiastic amateur/hobbyist since the late 1970s, but that doesn`t automatically mean I`m not shooting under the same bad weather conditions like a lot of pros do sometimes, so I like and need those tanky cameras like the D4s, I`m not interested in toys, but I`ve no problem to buy such cameras used years after their release to save money - there are no bad weather conditions to stop your passion as long as you use proper gear :)) - but I realy don`t need WiFi, a touchscreen, GPS or a faster USB in a camera body, ok, I don`t need video, if I would, I would buy a second-hand pro camcorder
got some comments on this video: 1. you comment way to much that it is "only" "pros" who need most of the functions. 2. the usb 2 connection, one less thing to carry around if you took a card reader? why is that? you would still need the cable for the camera, why not just simply change that cable to the memory card-reader instead? 3. and here i thought there were quite a lot of pro-photographers that used the nikon d800, sure it's not a sport camera but it works great at landscape and stuff like that? except for that, good video :)
interesting to hear some of your thoughts, I always thought that they keep the mp lower on the 1DX and D4 cameras because they can't get the high frames per second out of the higher mp, thats why the D800 does only 4fps, Plus the lower mp is better at high ISO, and thats the two main things they want out of those bodies, but your reasoning also makes sense about the work flow, and I think the reason it has no wi fi or gps on the pro body is because a camera needs to have some plastic to send the signal out through, and they don't want to do that with the weather sealed pro body, but I agree that it should be there somehow, I also agree that every new camera from this point on should have a touch screen, I can't believe the A7r and the XT1 didn't get one, in my opinion the D4s is Nikon's response to everyone thinking the 1DX is better than the D4, and they don't want anyone else switching over, and I don't think Canon will be in any rush to put out the 1DXll, I also think within 2 years there will be a mirrorless camera that does everything the 1DX does, but with the weight of a 6D, and with no mirror it will do even higher fps, better focusing, and have a touch screen, the future is mirrorless, and Canon and Nikon need to get into the game, Tony are you getting all of these cameras on loan, or did you actually buy an XT1 and EM1 ?
I think, lower MP=better high iso performance, consider d600, d800 and Sony a7 and a7r, all that 24 and 36mp, if the sensor have the same technology then lower MP will win the ISO battle because of the pixel quality. Well, for me it's good for wild life, sport shooter, photo journalist, and some others. But if the photog shoot more landscape, studio, portrait, all that need low iso and rarely crank up iso to 1600 or maybe more, so maybe more MP is better for better cropping. I don't do sports, wildlife and 80% of the time only use iso 100-200, and the rest 400-1600, so I prefer more MP, not too big as 36MP, but 24MP is enough. CMIW, cheers and happy shooting. Thanks also Tony Northrup love all your videos.
I am happy my two year old 1Dx still heading my brother's 2014 brand new D4s in term of fast and accurate focusing and burst rate speed from the processor to CF card ( based on the Lesar 1000x 32gb). Sport pros and news reporters can still stay with Canon.
Hi Tony! I am having this big debate whether to go for this camera or the D810, they look so close on what they can do,. What is their major differences, beside the prize? They both have the same 4xprocesor. thank you for your insight...
If you haven't purchased already, D810 all the way. Smaller camera, somewhere near half as expensive, and more room in your budget for lenses. D4s is pretty pointless if all you can afford is a 18-55 kit after spending 6,500 on a body.
Having a usb 2 but QXD slot just make no sense at all. Even a D800 have USB 3 cable and i used them a lot. Sometimes its so much easier to directly transfer from the camera to pc instead of finding the card reader hidden somewhere in ur bag. I think its especially true when i only got a SD/CF combined card reader.
amaying D4 is much sharper then D4s , not by a small amount , its huge difference , like 2 totally different cameras and manufacturers , how is it that you dont see this .
I don't care for the touchscreen or whatever USB is in the cam (external card readers are much quicker anyway, even if both are USB2), my gripe with with the D4 is the XQD and Compactfalsh cards - shey should have made it 2 of the same type, preferably compact flash. Nobody else uses XQD cards - why do we need them anyway?
Agreed. I do like that the 5D3 has mixed SD/CF cards, since SD cards tend to be cheaper and more readily available (say, if you fill up a card and need to buy an extra at a pharmacy).
Hi tony, i have ordered the canon 6D, can you help me with choosing a lense a can start with. I am an amateur photographer. Also how can i get access to ur blog. i have an account but i cant seem to access the buyers guide section but a was blocked.
Hi, Herman. If you've bought my Photography Buying Guide and can't access it, you can open a support ticket at sdpcommunity or just email me at tony@northrup.org. That should help you choose a lens, too. Thanks!
gilbert de la torre At this level, the difference in the lens systems is probably going to be more important. Check this: th-cam.com/video/Jva08HY6uLE/w-d-xo.html
The D4s is capable of using the WT-5 wifi adapter, which I own and use all of the time and it works great once you learn how to use and set it up properly. It is also made extremely well and is weather resistant and feels extremely well made. I am a photojournalist and it has held up to tough usage and still works great!
Why do you put so much emphasis on it being "Designed for professionals only."? There's literally nothing that sets it apart from any other full-frame dslr other than it just being better. It's in no way "Designed for professionals only.".
Well, it's substantially larger and heavier, making it less portable. A pro might need that, but it will generally discourage amateurs from bringing their camera. The buttons and dials are waterproofed and thus not as easy to use. The sensor captures far less detail than that of the D800, streamlining the pro workflow, something that isn't important to amateurs. And a pro can justify the cost; an amateur would be better of getting a D600 or D800 and spending the rest on lenses. That's why I wouldn't recommend it to an amateur, or even most pros.
SuperDigitalMe .... what the hell do you work with? i did as tony said, i got an d800 and for the rest of the money i got: an flash, 2 lenses, an reflector, new camera bag, new memory cards, filters, stronger tripod. and still got some money left to spend before i am up in the same price as the d4s :)
Tony Northrup Hmm... that's crazy. I just googled the D4 specs and it appears it too does have USB 2.0. Perhaps you can utilize that ethernet connection to download images really fast and also the wireless capabilities which I assume are also in the D4s now? The D800 for sure needs it with huge files, but on a 5000+ dollar full size body you'd think they'd have it too. I'd like to use a camera with wireless transfer. I don't know how fast it is, but it's probably super convenient.
How strange! The camera has no USB 3.0, no wifi, no gps and the screen solution is not over 1 million pixels. And it costs more than 50 000 Swedish crones. Am I right?
nah.. i think nikon is purely on business.. not on a rush... because they still want a good profit on d4s.. then final model to beat 1dx is D4x for sure..
The reason why they don't want to put USB3 on cameras is because it will interfere with the wifi. They explain the reason here (www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2423604,00.asp) I have wifi for my desktop and every time my external harddrive (USB3) wire gets too close, I lose internet.
Unfortunately necessity doesn't drive corporate decision making, the bottom line does. Which is why they are charging the professional $500 for the wifi add-on.
Just the d4s seems like it falls a little short when compared to the 1dx, I hope it's low light capability is as good as they say, I mean they had time to bring a nuke instead they brought a grenade, I guess we will wait and see like I said I only own nikon so it's a little disappointing for me such a minor upgrade.
Victor Oliveira The D4 beat the 1DX in overall performance. The 1DX was a little inaccurate autofocusing and it had a shallow buffer compared to the D4. The D4S is even further ahead. Read the reviews. If the Nikon is half-assed then Canon is just plain junk. Too many people fixate on one single aspect of performance and miss the overall picture.
"You can just toss it and it will not break" heh? I treat my D4 with great kindness as a $6500 camera should be. Start tossing these things around and they will break, they are not made that well.
+Monte Comeau you should watch digital rev torture test, they do everything to kill a D90 and can't kill it. I drop and smash a d3100 and d700 in the river and it is still working.
wifi? bah, no big deal... if you want it, use a mirrorless toy gps... not relevant (to me) touch screen would be of limited use in a pro body that explodes features into buttons... im to busy shooting mine to worry about fingering it on the screen card reader is no big deal either... usb is a last resort, and in my experience usb connections are not as durable as xqd or CF ports
With a touch screen a Pro can use a stylus when shooting with gloves or dirty hands, most of all physically challenged people with limited mobility in there hands can use it.
You must be kidding mentioning Facebook and social networking to justify the need for WiFi in Nikon D4s. If you need to post of facebook ,just use your smartphone to take the pic and post it. Who would buy this pro body to post pictures on FB?
+Antutu Konelan indeed, it is rather annoying when my wedding client ask me to send 1 picture immediately to her phone, but my camera doesn't have wifi.
Buy the Nikon D4S on Amazon at help.tc/d4s
This camera is the best purchase in 2022 for its money! I just have found one with only 2,5k shutter count for just 1300$ on eBay! That’s insane! Best deal!
+Wilbert Barraquio, that would only cause interference if you used USB 3.0 and Wi-Fi at the same time... and the D4S doesn't have wi-Fi.
@4:00 the Canon 1D-C can do 1920x1080 at 60P. Its a video optimized DSLR but it is still a DSLR.
My favorite part was when you started talking about the Disappointments ;)
For me, I'd want GPS the most out of the ones you listed.
i never had problems knowing where i took a picture, beats me.. never understood the usage of gps on cameras.

What 1D is that? Didn't know you have one...!?
i think it's eos 1V.
My D3s can do Manual mode with auto ISO too
Hi tony, i have ordered the canon 6D, can you help me with choosing a lense a can start with. I am an amateur photographer. Also how can i get access to ur blog. i have an account but i cant seem to access the buyers guide section but a was blocked.

For general purpose use can't beat the 24-105 IMHO.
don't you have any old full frame camera that you don't use anymore and want to sell it ?
I dont know if its just me but he keeps saying 18megapixels. Isnt it D4s is only 16mp?
Thanks for your video, now comment on 1dx so I can make a decision. canon has a sale on 1dx.
Thanks

The jury is still out there if the D4s is has good video. I'm hoping its aliasing and moire free unlike the old D4.
Thank you for the schooling!
Too many mega pixels is too much work? I think the main reason is larger pixels have better quality, and low noise in high ISO photos.
Yes, it's both.

Too many people fixate on one single aspect of performance and miss the overall picture.
if you have nikon lenses you buy a nikon camera
if you have canon lenses you buy a canon camera
you cant help that !!!
I thought it was 16, the same as the d4, my bad I guess
wow is all i can say about that camera.
"You can just toss it and it will not break" heh? I treat my D4 with great kindness as a $6500 camera should be. Start tossing these things around and they will break, they are not made that well.
+Monte Comeau you should watch digital rev torture test, they do everything to kill a D90 and can't kill it. I drop and smash a d3100 and d700 in the river and it is still working.
wifi? bah, no big deal... if you want it, use a mirrorless toy
gps... not relevant (to me)
touch screen would be of limited use in a pro body that explodes features into buttons... im to busy shooting mine to worry about fingering it on the screen
card reader is no big deal either... usb is a last resort, and in my experience usb connections are not as durable as xqd or CF ports
Pros use social networking... think wedding photographers. but PJs also need to send images back to editors.
+Antutu Konelan indeed, it is rather annoying when my wedding client ask me to send 1 picture immediately to her phone, but my camera doesn't have wifi.
