- In this video I just want to explain how to approach CTFs for learning. It's not about solving challenges and not about winning.

Thank you for uploading these. I’m a beginner student and it feels like every pen tester/ hacker comes off as arrogant (at least the ones I’ve met or seen) and I’m just intimidated to ask questions because I feel stupid for asking basic stuff. Thanks for being motivating and encouraging people to learn. This is my passion and I want to learn all I can. Keep up the amazing videos brother👍🏼
I'm from Mexico and I feel exactly like you
If I may ask, how did you start your pen test / hacking journey? There's so much info out there I don't know where to start.
Arrogance is often used as a tool to obfuscate one's shortcomings. There are way too many frauds and confidence tricksters in any field.
@@hansrichter5227 I find it very easy to ignore these types, their arrogance just bores the hell out of me.
you can make a team with me i know its kinda late but i am not rude at all and can accompany you with learning by learning myself
Tip: Try every question on a CTF regardless of its points. Sometimes you may get discouraged by looking at high points questions but they are either super simple or super complex yet cool and fun
As a beginner, I find it hard to look for topics to learn. I don't even recognize the terms used in a writeup. But I am learning slowly. Thanks for the good advice. I have found two people so far in youtube from whom I enjoy learning. You are one of them.
Whats the other one I'm alot like you a beginer
@@jaymesc4436, the other guy is Ben Eater.
Could try Hackerspolit and Jackktutorials.
Progress? I am about to start my journey
go tryhackme,,,,avoid this ctf....I never heard about this...look my comment
But like, is no one gonna talk about how sick this hoodie is?!
OMG I thought the same, mega cooler Pulli :)
it's teddy fresh from h3h3
So fxkking SICK!
shaggy?
Was gonna say something but you have it covered...

50% of the CTFs I've not completed...is a result of me not following the \"one\" idea I had before giving up and looking for the write up.
So I appreciate you pointing out that you should try and include everyone you think and do during the CTF.
Thanks for the video :)
In Soviet Russia, Flag captures you.
Literally XD
🤣
lmaaoo
In Soviet Russia, flags don't capture me because I'm also don't capture any flags...

Learning with gamification techniques (like CTF’s) is awesome! Great video mate well done
I recently thought of starting CTFs as practice and fun , I really enjoy your videos .
One thing though , I think volume is quite low , I would suggest moving mic closer or something so we can listen better ..
Exactly how me and my team started in CTF ! In fact, we get to know CTF through this channel

Love you bro ... Tysm .. u answered most of my questions and directed me to a good path .
Plz carry on these daily videos.
Honestly I love CTFs, I did one my freshmen year and it was the reason I changed my major to cyber security and got in to hacking.

That mentality should be applied to everything

The little cloud on the chair looks like saying "whatever he is saying is true and you have to obey him" in a cute way.
Thank you for explaining this! I was thinking of trying CTF just for fun and now I at least know what to expect😊

Thank you! Your video tutorials are very very useful and i am very happy you are doing them!
There are also on going CTFs like ctflearn.com. You can do the easy ones just for fun or learn something with the hard ones.
PicoCTF is another one
Best explanation ever and so much to relate to. Thank you so much !!

Thank you, CyberSec Michael Cera!
Is that a Teddy Fresh sweater? I see you're a man of culture
Thanks for this video. It inspires me to continue studying. :))
What I need to know before I can do my first CTF? Do I have to be advanced or maybe an expert? Or could a person who for example never thought about programming an shacking start doing CTFs?
Depends which category do you choose, if it is reverse, you need some asm knowledge.
I recommend you to learn linux CLI basics to start.
Tryhackme is really good for beginers.
Is that Ben Eater's 8-bit computer build kit I see? Awesome stuff.

One quick question about CTF, when CTF gives you file and in the file it has a long text with begin and end binary like JPG, what do you look for?
Too early for funny comments 😂
Should i use kali as primary os or on vmware
Because after installing kali as primary os i am getting worst battery backup i tried all things like tlp powertop but nothing helps its having amd graphics driver problem it doesnt support what should i do

Hey, which OS do you use? Looks like Windows on the first glance :)

I'm trying to do the Over The Wire AdventCTF and I feel like I can sorta understand 2 of them but it's so so hard since I still don't know many things. I'll try my best till the end of the month.
yeah "sorta understanding" is was motivates me to do it more, that's the most interesting part. I'm a beginner too
Please make next video on How to take notes,
Like is it okay to write it in notepad or should i write it on paper,
What should I write like those
Whatever you prefer! Sometimes I write by hand. And sometimes just notepad notes.txt
@@LiveOverflow ok thanks
I recommend paper & pen unless you are dealing with some crypto stuff where you have huge numbers, that you could copy&paste. In that case obviously notepad is a better idea.
Do you have a 8 bit computer made with arduino on your desk ?
Going to Participate at the 36c3 Junior CTF
Please make video on vulnerable JavaScript library that could cause dos
you remind me of my Compilers TA haha
Thank you 🔥
Great tips
So the process is something like find the challenge, do your best take notes etc, and then.. whatever the result is.. look at the writeups and learn from them?

Then there's those of us that wonder what basic skills do one need to start a CTF, is there a ctf for dummies or walkthrough for at least the mindset?
Don't really want to sit and read writeups in the hope of getting it without an idea of what I ought to be looking for.
Check out the OverTheWire challenges, especially Bandit for complete newcomers!
The basic skills for participating in a ctf is being able to use google. No really though, if you are a beginner who has minimal knowledge about hacking/doing ctfs the best u can do is to just find one or two challenges and not focus on getting the flag but more on the process of how u tried solving it. A lot of times hacking means doing intensive research and acquiring new skills to use them to your advantage.
Try solving a few picoCTF challenges, that's a good start.
i am not a thief but can i take your heart pls???
Very Nice bro ;)

It’s been 1 year. Can you answer your question now?
Hello !
I do not have enough time to spend 2 hours on a ctf .. so I try to solve challenges on www.root-me.org regularly and when I have no idea how to do I'm stuck and finally I give up and I move on to another challenge. I do not think it's very constructive to give up on these things because it's precisely on these challenges that I'm supposed to learn the most. How could I still learn from these challenges? Asking for the answer directly does not seem to be a very good solution, and when I ask for help on the root-me irc, even when I just ask a little help to know a little better what to do without give me the answer, at the slightest hint I know what to do next as if I had been given the answer (I mean that I almost feel that I get too big a hint and that it is ultimately not constructive at all for me).
Are CTFs helpful for beginners? For those who don't know much just very very basics?
Can you put a link to your sweatshirts in the "Stuff I use"
@@perkinskurt6147 No.

PinkoCTF is really good for beginners, the makers of this ctf won the defcon ctf 4 times i believe. Ctfs are definitely addicting cant want till im out of school so i can use all my spare time for ctfs, vulnhub , and bug bounties (im not that good yet tho)
