- The petrochemical industry is an exciting industry that will expand during the coming years offering plenty of job opportunities. Zackary Bunyan heads to the Pohokura Gas Field in New Plymouth to learn more about the role of a petrochemical engineer.
Owned by Shell Todd Oil Services who operate a number of Taranaki oil fields, Pohokura is somewhat unique in that it is operated from a remote control room allowing the plant to be unmanned most of the time.
The control room is where one operator is able to monitor and manage gas and condensate which is extracted from five offshore wells which travels by undersea pipe back to the Pohukura processing station before being fed into the national grid network where it accounts for 40 percent of the country's gas supply.
Zackary learns that 95 percent of problems at the processing station can be dealt with from the remote control room but there are aspects of the job that need an onsite visit. One of those is launching the PIG (Pipeline Inspection Gauge) and to his delight, this is a task he can get involved with at the station.
A fascinating career with many options and opportunities within New Zealand and overseas, Zackary has found a job that has certainly caught his interest.
