👋 Hey all! This is the start of a complete beginner's course to Notion that I'm creating. I've decided to release the lessons as I create them so I can take your feedback and questions into account for future lessons. You can find the course home page with links to all the resources and templates here: thomasjfrank.com/fundamentals/ 😎 Enjoy, and let me know what questions you have!
Thanks for the great content , also I was playing with your ultimate task template it’s great but I just can’t figure out how to use the cold task feature , if possible make a video explaining how it works , one more time thanks and good luck
@@hananeqorar2510 I'll make a public video on it when I can - in the mean time, have you seen the video I put in the Ultimate Tasks changelog? Should hopefully explain most of it! www.notion.so/collegeinfogeek/Ultimate-Tasks-and-Projects-2fccba2d42e544a687194b6337272192#80f2d417950942ef912607a588013856
all sounds good..but how do I download and install the bloody thing on an iMac ??? this would be my first fundamental step ..ps I am NOT computer savvy !!!
This video was awesome! Certainly helped me from struggling a lot! Best notion video out there. But how did you get that pixel llama emoji? Can you send it? 🥹
Thanks for the video Thomas. To all the viewers, in this video you will learn about, 1."How to create a new page", 2."Comments", 3."Backlinks" 4. Page view-"Full Width & Normal View" 5. Edit font style. 6. Customize -"Change the view of Comments, Backlinks and Top-level discussions" Thank you
Pluses - Starting from the beginning but not too slow paced. Even if you are already an avid Notion user you might find a tidbit. But Thomas does not make assumptions about his learners, he explains the concepts and that usage in a straightforward way. He also provides a context for when you might use these features. Level Up: Although this is a top-tier youtube video, the learning could be extended with an invitation to apply the learning to create a notin page independantly.
Things I noticed... I am not trying to pick on you... I know you want the feedback to make your course. Thanks for making this free! These comments are for Lesson 1. There doesn't seem to be a duplicate button for Page 3. I was able to duplicate the other pages. I could not find the Database with the top hat so I made my own. It took me while to find the templates so I could duplicate them. Also the templates and the video are not named the same. It might be good to let people know that there are resources in the written version that are not in the video
Thank you for my first intro to Notions - Even though it changed a bit I was still able to follow and I am looking forward to the next lesson. This is going to help me stay organize.
Dear Thomas, thank you so much for the free notion fundamental course. With the help of your course I was able to create a beautifully prepared case study in notion for my internship interview and was able to get an offer! I am very grateful for your work and wish you all the best! Yours, Venjamin
You know what, nowadays, Thomas Frank Explains Thomas Frank Explains became most visited & most favourite, TH-cam channel, i love your explain dude, thanks for the video.
Not only did you teach me a bunch about notion, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear a Discworld reference with the mention of a Turtles all the way down. The Great A'tuin would be pleased.
Your channel is a phenomenal resource. I'm new to Notion and your explanations are very helpful. Here's a little tag line I thought of for you. "When it comes to Notion I need a frank explanation, a Thomas Frank explanation that is!"
Hi Thomas! I binge-watched your entire video over the weekend. It's beneficial both in terms of tips and thinking about how to organize work. Thank you so much for making this series. 🙇
This has been a massive help to me as I work to learn and master Notion for myself and plan for the rollout of it to my team of 10 users for work collaboration and their own personal project management. Thanks, Thomas!
Dude, your references to stuff, like Neuromancer and the universe on the back of the turtle, are on point! Also, this was super helpful. I thought I was going to get one or two nuggets out of this. This was all the nuggets, all the time
Thanks Thomas. This video is so helpful giving me a well-paced introduction to pages (and clarifying for me the difference between pages and blocks). I am now onto the third video in your fundamentals course, and the others have been equally good. I also appreciate having the information in both video and text format, as well as the templates.
Fab, thanks Thomas! Had been cracking on doing stuff but with lots of independent pages. So good to see a basic building block and see clearly how they're MEANT to be used! Looking fwd to working through the rest of this series!
Thanks for the video. You'd make an excellent Zangief cosplay, hilarious random example. Learning about "Necromancer" was cool too, high-value details!
Thanks a ton for doing this course, Thomas! I've been wanting to learn how to better use Notion for a while now; it feels kind of intimidating and I haven't taken the time to really sit and fanagle with it so I just use basic pages for note-taking. The lesson was clear and helpful; greatly appreciate you showing everything (including keyboard shortcuts)! Looking forward to future lessons =D
Hey Thomas! I'm currently doing your notion fundamentals course and so far I'm loving it ... however I am having trouble accessing the sample page template from the first video that you have done as I wanted to keep that as a practical example in notion... nay help or am I being silly and not doing something right ?? I would appreciate the help, Thank You!

Perhaps Notion had a glitch when you checked those pages?
Hello Thomas !! Do you have a complete beginner to advance course on Notion ?? I mean a long Course to completely understand notion from scratch ?? Or can u please refer someone's course ?? It will be really helpful for a rookie like me !! 🌼💐🌹
Haha I should've started with these first but actually started with the master class as my first tutorial! LOL This one felt a bit too basic but I'm working through the tutorials in your Notion Fundamentals page!
I can‘t use the templates. When I click the link, I‘m forwarded to your external page and when I try to log in to duplicate your template, I land at my own pages without a way to get back to your page. When I open the link again, I‘m logged out again and the cycle repeats. Can someone help me?
I have no idea how to put the backlink field to empty page... I had linked page to the other page but the backlink on linked page didn't show up. What is the block or field to view the backlink on page???????
Hi, Thomas! What is the difference between page created from typing "+" and from typing "/page" ? Can't understand this. Seems similar, but looks different
They're very, very similar. In most cases, you'll get the same end result. Typing "/page" creates a Page block and takes you to it. Once there, you'll set the title for the page. By contrast, typing "+Book Notes" and then choosing the first option will create the same Page block, but the title will be already set by what you typed - "Book Notes". Essentially, the + command is a shortcut for creating new pages - or, to be technical, sub-pages, since you're creating the page within the current page. The + command is also flexible; you can choose to create the sub-page elsewhere (instead of on the current page), create a sub-page from an existing template, or even use it to link to existing pages (which you can also use @ and [[ for). We'll be going over all of this in Lesson 4!
@@ThomasFrankExplains Great, thanks for the detailed answer! It's a bit tricky to convert one to the other. I have a page with both and I don't know how to make my links look even. Also, both of them are useful in certain situations, so I can't refuse one of them. Hopefully, Lesson 4 will help me fix my workflow. )
@@igorbeaver4692 this actually pushed me to discover something new - thanks! There is in fact a difference I wasn't aware of until now. When you use the "+" command to create a sub-page, you can actually create that page inline - meaning it can be placed in the middle of a line of text within another block. It's like the difference between Mentions (inline) and Links (blocks on their own line), which deal with existing pages. So if you want to have a sub-page within the current page - but have it linked inline - you'd use the + command. This could be very useful for creating a wiki-style setup, with links right inside text blocks. One key difference from Mentions and Links - in this situation, using either the + command or the Page block will result in the new page being visible in the sidebar navigation. This makes sense, since the current page is where this new sub-page lives. On the the other hand, Mentions don't create links in the sidebar - but Link blocks do.
Yes, but there will be some limitations. The primary one is that the mobile apps can’t create multi-column layouts right now, so when you get to that lesson you’d need to have access to a computer to make use of it. Most everything else is doable, though you’ll have some slight UI differences compared to the desktop apps!
I deleted a page accidentally by choosing "permanently." Can I still recover it? All my life projects are there, and my business is going to be ruined because of my error. Please help.

Thank you for doing this. Searched many videos --- but yours are the best...
Hi Thomas ! The way you explains is great.
Well this was more useful than the ton of notion videos I've watched. Let's see how the rest of this course goes.

I did not understand the shortcut key CTRL + L, what does it do exactly? Does it copies the link of the notion page?
Yep, just copies the URL of the current page to your clipboard!

good information but still too fast for me, is there a beginner beginner video, my side bar is different then yours and I cant help databases help!
I deleted a page accidentally by choosing "permanently." Can I still recover it? All my life projects are there, and my business is going to be ruined because of my error. Please help.
I'm a little confused. Whenever I open a page, it's blank. Whenever you open a page, it has all that stuff on it. I dunno what is going on.
This video is a couple years old now - recently, Notion changed their UI so that those options are along the bottom of the screen.
you did not inform how you created database page
Nice intro
what to start with the web or desktop app
I prefer the desktop app!
They are functionally identical, except the desktop app has a cache that can make it faster than the web version at times.
jacked!
