we hv a saying in my part of the world. A big heart is usually overcrowded. I feel like in this juncture of the story, that is the difference between LZ and WY. WY has too much going on, too many people he loves and cares about. LZ is there too, but sort of locked away in a safe place since he doesn't have to worry about LZ's safety and security. LZ's heart on the other hand, has been closed for so long to the world, that when he let WY in, he ruled his heart single handedly. Plus LZ's is worried to death about WY's well being. There is an imbalance right now. Both love each other deeply, just have different paths to travel. It is beautiful how that is shown here.

穷奇道分离后，蓝湛想了很久要怎样帮魏婴，所以不夜天的时候说”有变，事情没有那么简单”。只可惜师姐突然来了！

The past was filled with tragedies due to following his heart, yet Xianxian never changed his righteous self. He was able to continue and discover that he is not alone in the world. He never changed, he is just like old Xianxian who will follow his heart and do good. Who has really changed was Lanzhan.

I think they have confessed before the scene in the wood, but this one nail it on the head with the question "Who Am I to you" to responses of WWX "I once consider you as my soulmate" & LZ's "I still am" - they literally speak from their heart. The internal conflict of different cultivation practices and their love bear a great pain for both of them...how can they be together and see as equal if one keeps feeling insufficient. Weiying keeps misunderstood Lanzhan's intention of protecting and helping him with his Zither's songs and hiding him in Cloud Recesses. I love the scene with his sister best - Weiying's coddly questioning his sister about love and hinting at his own "love" with curiosity...how can you not see clearly he is so in love already. He is conflicted with his pain to love and not burden someone with his love. Weiying is always selfless and think of others more than himself (i.e. detach himself from Jiang's sect and gave golden core to Jiang Cheng). That's pure love right there. However, his love for Lanzhan is much more especially care for Lanzhan's reputation and not tainted by his love. Weiying had to hold back but his thoughts cannot lie to him and that always called out for the name "Lanzhan" - he is in too deep, no need for 16 years later to realize this.

Does the word used by WY really mean soulmate? I have heard so many translations, confidant, close friend, etc. I know the word 'lifelong' has some implication here but did the word used mean soulmate?

Not quite. I generally don't reply TH-cam comments but as someone who knows Mandarin Chinese, I've always felt that the translation as "soulmate" is not quite accurate. I'll explain. The term that Wei Ying / Wei Wuxian (WWX) uses in explaining what Lan Zhan / Lan Wangji (LWJ) means to him is "毕生知己“ (pronounced: bisheng zhiji).
毕生 (bisheng) = lifelong, 知己 （zhiji) = confidant
毕生知己 (bisheng zhiji) = lifelong confidant
The interesting thing to note though is that the term 知己 (zhiji) can be used in a platonic way or a romantic way. So, a person may refer to a platonic close friend as 知己 (zhiji) but a person may also refer to a romantic partner as 知己 (zhiji). So how does someone know whether the 知己 (zhiji) is meant to be platonic or romantic? It's usually by context. In a heteronormative society, people would assume that if you are referring to someone of the same gender as 知己 (zhiji), you mean it in the platonic sense, whereas if you refer to someone of the opposite gender as 知己 (zhiji), you mean it in the romantic sense. Of course, since both WWX and LWJ are male, this leaves the 知己 (zhiji) here up to the audience's interpretation. In fact, I believe the ambiguity is deliberate.
If you look at the chinese characters that make up 知己 (zhiji), 知 (zhi) means "(to) know" and 己 (ji) is short for自己 (ziji) which means "(one)self". So the idea of 知己 (zhiji) is someone who knows you as well as you know yourself. [Technically, I'll argue that WWX doesn't know LWJ that well, and the person who reads LWJ the best and can be said to know him as well as he knows himself is actually LWJ's brother Lan Xichen.]
I think people who translate 知己 (zhiji) as "soulmate" may be trying to look for a Western concept or a Western equivalent for the term. I know some people may say that soulmates can also be platonic or romantic but, generally, I think ”soulmate" seems to have a grander or more romantic connotation, while 知己 (zhiji) is more neutral. If you were to translate "soulmate" into chinese, it would be 灵魂伴侣 (linghun banlü) [灵魂 (linghun) = soul, 伴侣 (banlü) = partner or mate.]
Lastly, I would add that there's some element of subjectivity or interpretation in translation, so perhaps after reading my explanation, some people may still think "soulmate" fits the description of 知己 (zhiji).

enigmatic cynic thank you for the explaination. I didnt think it meant something as literal as ‘soulmate’ from a western context but platonic or not, it still sounds like more than ‘a good friend’. Sounds like one would call very few people their zhiji in one lifetime.

If I were ranking the different terms by level, I would say soulmate / 灵魂伴侣 (linghun banlü) is the highest level and it would be equivalent to "the one", while 知己 (zhiji) is a notch below that, and then a good friend would be another notch below.
