    The price of the pearl necklace isn’t because “pearls were considered rare at the time.” It’s because the pearls are *NATURAL PEARLS* not cultured pearls. They happened completely by accident, rather than being created by human intervention and are even more rare now than then. Additionally, they are perfectly matched and therefore even more rare, completely unlike a cultured pearl necklace of the same size.
    The difference between a natural pearl and a cultured pearl could be compared to the difference between a real diamond and a man-made diamond.

      Definitely agree with you that natural pearls worth a lot more than cultured pearls. The point I was trying to make there is to explain why Plant agreed to swap the mansion with the necklace at the time. It’s difficult for people to understand why a fifth avenue mansion was priced the same as a pearl necklace under today’s circumstances. So my comment of “rarity” (which is reflected by market prices) is in comparison to the mansion, not man-made pearls 😊
