UPDATE: The button seems to be a crap design. The tactile switch requires that backing plate to be solidly glued to the front panel. It came loose and the button didn't work any more. I had to take apart again and epoxy the backing plate in place to the front glass.
And it should help to use tape over the broken glass to prevent fragments flying everywhere.

It reminds me of the first time I replaced an iPad screen back in 2015. took half an hour and i ended up having to manipulate the back plate too because one of the corners was too messed up to receive the new glass. obviously found that out after peeling off the strips on the adhesive. oh well, you have to start somewhere, lol

I'd say good job for a 1st timer repair, about the one thing I'd suggest would have been to cover the shattered display with packing tape. It's a common trick to keep shattered displays in one piece with alot less shards to vacuum up afterwards. Other than that, everything works, so good job (for a manure hauler).

    Help for newbies to this:
Use a heated mat, it warms the whole pad making it very easy.
Use a little isopropyl alcohol, it really helps loosen the glue.
As others have suggested, cover the whole screen with parcel tape.
When you get hold of a piece of double sided tape sticking it down you should gently pull it, makes the job easier.
As Dave said, always resin down the home button plate or it’ll come loose.
Use 3m fabric tape and don’t trust the adhesive that comes with the digitiser.
Make sure the iPad is switched off when you plug in the lcd or you will blow the backlight.
Hope this helps a few people, I’ve probably missed a couple of things but there are so many things.

The button bracket was screwed to screen, so it holds better, but the glue on button membrane had worn out and does not feel the same anymore. The tape on glass tip is actually very useful as others pointed out
Not a big deal but I would avoid working in devices that are fully charged, you never know
And lastly I do not recommend buying a screen with a home button pre-installed as you will loose the TouchID functionality. The little chip next to the button is cryptographically tied to your motherboard, hence the need to transfer it in order to keep the biometrics working.

Had some success with a (2500w) flatiron, just heat it up a few seconds and turn it upside down (and put it in a vice or something else to hold). Put mobile phone or tablet on it and let it sit for a while. For better heat spreading, move it around on the iron. You can also attach a flat metal plate to the flatiron (upside down) to increase the heat surface (easier when service tablets) however needs a longer time to heat up. After a while take off the device (wear gloves when doing this!) and I was able to rip it off in one go! Very easy.

I have done the same repair and I never want to do it again. (Un)fortunately newer iPads have the digitizer glass and LCD permanently bonded so if you break one you have to replace both. More expensive but there is far less that can go wrong. You're also very lucky that dented corner (which is what broke the glass in the first place) didn't crack the replacement glass.
EDIT: Apparently the newer cheaper iPads are still separate glass and panel. I fixed an iPad Air and gave it away, the Air 2 that replaced it has a bonded screen.

My iphone 5S battery is going to die some time and I was wondering if I should take it apart, but I don't have hot air equipment. The only other thing I could think of is getting like a big power bank thing and a long cable, and running it from my pocket.

    • @KarlBaron
      @KarlBaron 4 ปีที่แล้ว

You can get any corner phone repair shop to replace the 5S battery for you for like $30-$40

The 5s screen isn't glued on like the new phones. You just need a suction cup.

Thanks for all the info. I think it is actually a 5C and I messed that up. I think it was the cheaper one.

Hi Dave, man that really sucks. For around $20 you could've bought an armour type case for it. Then the kids can throw it all they like.
I know because my 6 year old is a ruffian with my Air 2 and if it weren't for the case, I would've had to do several repairs..

y'know, my iPad 1st gen had a wall collapse on it, and still works perfectly. It's just useless because no apps support it anymore. Still gets pretty decent battery time, too.

With everything apart I’d have recommended replacing the batteries. That would give it like-new capacity and you wouldn’t have to do all this all over again when the original batteries start to go bad.
You definitely don’t want glass shards getting around when you go barefoot in the lab all the time!

I don't think anyone was screaming at you, Dave. The screams are reserved for Apple. Every iteration, they challenge themselves to design a product that a) the user is more likely to break (glass to the edges, slippery as possible, etc) and, b) is more difficult to repair than the last. You have got to have a case and screen protector on every iPhone and iPad.

Feeler gauges are a cheap source for metal spudgers, 2-3 bucks and you get a bunch of them of various thickness. Count your blessings that the glass wasn't glued to the screen, that is a pain to do.
