    I am building a raised shack shelter using natural materials. I make a bark roof using pine bark. I use an axe and saw to carve log cabin notches into the roof logs. The way I have built the structure means that it is completely self supporting. Although I have used bushcraft to make cordage from tree roots. The shelter is inspired by an old book called Shelters, Shacks and Shanties by D.C Beard. There is a link below to this book. I am trying to build the bushcraft camp shelter as close to the stilted shack shelter in Beard's book as I can. But I am adapting where possible. The log cabin notches help to keep the upright logs in place. I am not confident that the bark shingle roof is going to prevent water getting in, so I will soon add more debris to the top of it to make the shelter more waterproof. The camp has been built from entirely dead wood that I have used from my previously dismantled bushcraft camp in the woods. Thanks for joining me on the adventure! Part 3 will be out soon.

      A suggestion for the bark roofing, Using it like curved roofing tiles might work in sort of v^v^v^ type of a configuration lengthwise with the pitch of the roof with the down curve V overlapped with the up curve ^ .

    Your bark should go vertical rather than horizontal. Also make it one row upside down the other rite side up. This way you have hills and valleys and the water runs from the high to low then off the shelter. Almost like the terracotta roofs.

      Gawin, I'd agree with you. Whether you're tiling roofs or thatching cottages and haystacks, you try not to create mini "dams" so water with the help of gravity can make the fastest descent. I was expecting another such layer on top of this one but nothing eventuated.

    Your mallet sequence made me go dig out " thumper". We found each other when I was maybe 13. The crown of a hawthorn root with three " sprouts" from it. Cut two of them off and this was a true friend as I explored bushcraft in the early 70's way before this was a thing.
    Damn ... this doesn't seem to want me to share a pic ...

    With regard the bark, by placing it across the roof beams the curvature of the bark will have a tendency to drip water down through. Instead,think Spanish tile.
    Start at the bottom and lay upside down bark in the grooves between the beams,then, sections of bark the right side up between the pieces you just laid down but overlapping them as much as possible.this approach along will help shed water down the roof pitch.
    Just a thought!

    Gawin said it right for you but after I would put the bark on cover with the bracken to hold it all in place. Lastly place a couple more pole on top to hold it all together. On the front of the cross beam add to more pole opposing the roof to help support the uprights.

  • @southernwanderer7912
    @southernwanderer7912 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could tie or brace a notched log across the roof where the sleeping area starts and then add the roofing material and you wouldn't need as much. Why cover the part not covering the sleeping area? I think the bark will help hold the bracken in place so a good idea.
    That was a great shelter build. Another option for out in the woods. Look forward to part 3.

    I think laying the bark with the poles up and down with an initial layer upside down (UUUU) and the next layer (nnnnnn) like Mediterranean roof tiles it would have afforded a bit more rain protection.

  • @eh3309
    @eh3309 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    If only that bark came out in big pieces you would be golden. I think it depends on the type of tree and bark it produces. The shingle idea is a good one, since you can apply it verticaly or horizantaly. Good video! you can always layer on top of it as you said. When there is a wil, there is a way!

    make a gauge for your log cabin notches . Just like your pole to tell you how long you need your poles, the notch gauge tells you how wide and deep to cut them. While being small, light, and portable to where you cut the pole down.
    @26:00 the roof material dilemma. Do you have clay? really dense peat? Put that down as the first layer to seal the gaps then heap on the debris. There is using the pine bark. Lay and layer with the outside down, then a layer with the outside up. These interlock and and shed water if you place them from the bottom up. The upper layer over lapping the one beneath. To harvest the bark, it's like beech bark; use your axe the cut vertical down the trunk then pop it off in two halves. That your tree is dead helps as the bark separates from the tree easily. A Slick is a tool for taking off bark. Looks like a chisel with a two, three, or four inch wide beveled blade.
    To bad you do not have a froe, then you would make some one meter length shingles for one meter lengths of log.
    @32:00. Use a come along. attach one end of the cable to the tree you need that is stuck and the other end to a firmly rooted tree. Use padding if the firmly rooted tree is still live. A few sticks will do, just so the cable doesn't dig into the live trees bark.

  • @johnmeyer5474

    That seems like a lot of work and a lot of wood for the shelter you get. I notice that you do not have much of an understory from which to gather supple, small-diameter materials: one has to go with what is available. I felt the way you do about adding diagonal bracing for rigidity. This is meant to be a basic structure; more sophisticated joinery might come later in the book. It is great fun to watch this project come along.

    Still watching but..
    On the roof top of go either
    Brakken then bark or vice versa
    Use both I'd go with brakken 1st to cushion the bark while insinuating like a real home theory
    And harvesting the bark with ease ? I haven't tried it yet but
    Maybe like a wire saw or maybe even rope ... Around the tree under the bark and slide/scoot up or down until you get the size chunk of bark desired or it falls off lol
    Hope that helps Mike
    Another great video love it

    2 ideas for bracken roof. First, somehow weave it to form a tighter, more rain-resistant “material”. Second, bundle it like bundles of thatch (using “rope” of bracken to tie bundle), then put a row of closely placed thatch bundles across bottom and the second or next row up would overlap first row by 50%, etc, etc. Might be tons of work....so maybe not practical.

    You should learn thatching, that would be really cool on a shelter.

    Mike secretly wants to build a full-size log cabin in the woods, he’s a cabinaholic, and just can’t admit it. LmAO.
