I do hope they find a way to bring the M&L games to switch since they haven't touched a single NDS game for switch yet except for pokemon mystery dungeon we haven't gotten anything special from the NDS maybe something small idk but dual screen games are kind of hard to pull off and most M&L games except for the first one are dual screen games

Sometimes a game just works better on a different console, and things like RPG and TTYD coming back in an improved form for a new generation to easily access just seems like a flat positive to me
When is Nintendo's line up not Mario heavy though? It's easy for it to not be a problem for you, because you're enthusiastic about Mario. But not everyone is enthusiastic about Mario, some of us want something else, like a proper new Donkey Kong Adventure.

I don't know why, but it seems like people like him expect for us to have some kind of guilty conscience or something for being excited for what is arguably a pivotal renaissance for Mario, especially the Mario RPG series. So what if the direct was mainly Mario focused? Man, I'm GLAD it was, and I'd have the same attitude if it would've been mainly focused on Donkey Kong, Zelda, or just on Metroid. We're not gonna suspend our excitement for this momentous revival of the Mario RPG series just to try and add a placebo effect of solace and copium for a group of disgruntled consumers who are rantin' and ravin' about not getting what they wanted, all because they probably put full stock into some RUMORS, and nothing was/is ever promised to us to begin with anyway. I'm not saying we can't be excited about this game or that game potentially getting announced, I'm just saying that it's counterproductive and ridiculous for anybody to try and rain down on somebody else's parade or make them feel bad for being excited just because they didn't get what they wanted. There's been plenty, and I mean PLENTY of times that us Mario RPG/Paper Mario fans have been burned time and time again, but it's just our time to rejoice and celebrate. DK fans, Kirby fans, Zelda fans, and Metroid fans will have their time to rejoice and celebrate in due time, it's just a matter of patience.
Something else that people like him have to understand is that Nintendo focusing on one particular IP in a direct isn't a alienation or a blatant act of ignorance or ignorance PERIOD of their other IPs that also has many many fans. No matter how anybody looks at this, Nintendo and whoever the development team is that's working on this ambitious remaster/remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is clearly pouring their heart and soul into it, I mean, they saved it as the last BIG announcement, something that practically NOBODY expected. This is the road to a prosperous future for the Mario RPG/Paper Mario series and their fanbases👍.

and some others already lived long enough and got lucky enough to have already played the remade games
there are so many more people now that haven't even gotten the chance though so i find the complaints kinda sad at best, narcistic at worst.

It's crazy to think that the two best Mario RPGs are being remade for the Switch. Let alone that they'll be released within six months to a year of each other.
As someone who liked Colour Splash and Origami King, seeing TTYD getting an HD remake was so cool to see. Despite never playing it, I've heard so many good things about it that I've always wanted to try it, so the fact it's going to be so accessible is crazy. Couple that with the Super Mario RPG remake, and suddenly traditional Mario RPGs are back! Very curious to see if TTYD will sell as well/better than Origami King
I actually did play Thousand Year Door on the Gamecube, and I can confirm it's a great game. I have the minority view that the original Paper Mario on the N64 is better, and I also agree with you that Color Splash and Origami King are fantastic, so I'm out of step with the rest of the Paper Mario fans. But Thousand Year Door is still great, and now you will finally be able to play it without having to shell out ridiculous money to a reseller on Amazon or eBay.

Not only am I hoping Paper Mario going back to basics if TTYD does well, but I'm also hoping that Chihiro Fujioka (director of the og Mario RPG game and the Mario and Luigi series) gets the greenlight to make that direct sequel he's been wanting to make for decades if SMRPG preforms well
Peach being a damsel arc seems to have be wrapped up in Odyssey, by her assertion in rejection both Mario and Bowser's constant tug of war for her. And her seeing the world post game, because after Odyssey she hasn't been kidnapped since then.

If someone had traveled through time back to the 1990s and told me this is the kind of stuff gamers would start saying in the future, I'd have apologized to anyone who ever bullied me for being one and kicked my own ass.
She was captured in both Luigi's Mansion 3 (alongside everyone except Luigi to be fair) and in Origami King, unless you're only counting mainline platformers, which there hasn't been many of since Odyssey. However, it does seem that they're relying on the "Peach gets kidnapped" plot less than they used to.

Honestly, if they can get like way forward or someone to make a new Mario and Luigi game I will freak out like the way everyone else has been freaking out. Still really happy for Super Mario RPG and thousand Year door remakes and I'm totally going to get them and play them. But for me that would be my Arlo moment.
Paper Mario fans are about to start a "Buy TYYD" campaign like Pikmin fans did with Pikmin 4.

Its amazing how a very good game can turn a very serious and calmed man into a jumping kid full of joy.

My greatest fear is that these remakes are just a way to appease fans of the old style of Mario RPGs, and not actually a sign that they’re thinking of making a new Mario RPG in the same vain. Like how they remake old 3D Zeldas with no intention of returning to their more linear style for new entires.

Origami King and TTYD remake both being on the Switch is a best case scenario as someone who enjoys new and old Paper Mario.
Paper Mario Bros? Sounds like a title Nintendo of Europe would come up with.
Damsel in distress is one of my favorite tropes and really is a key way to set up dynamics in a very unique way. I think modern storytelling means the person who is in distress needs to be broken rather than just a one diminsional character. So think of Witcher, or Demon Slayer, etc. It's modern day damsel in distress storytelling that is so necessary in setting up a dynamic.
In those specific examples it's a father - daughter set up and a brother - sister mission set up, so you don't need relationships in this dynamic to be romantic. In Aliens you get a mother - daughter dynamic too. It's the character being flat and one diminsional that I don't like in thos dynamics. Or helpless just to be helpless.
You can't be a hero if you aren't saving someone.
Exactly. The impact of this dynamic surpasses a 'trope' as it speaks to our base instinct to protect. There's a reason it's been around as long as there have been stories.
Now that we have platforms for long-form storytelling these characters can be fleshed out more and more which makes it saving them have an even greater impact.
I'm also disagreeing that it's "outdated" mostly because you can start of Peach as helpless but develop her later on as the movie series goes on - what else can we develop with Peach now when she seems "complete" now and isn't over the top enough unlike Daisy at moments where her aggressive can be off-putting at times.
I guarantee everyone who is against the damsel in distress trope would suddenly praise media deploying that trope if said damsel was transgender.
Daniel, I LOVE your idea for Paper Mario Bros. There are so many "enemies" you could turn into partners. Would love to see a Hammer Bro, or a Spike, Pirahna Plant, etc.
the only modern paper mario I finished was sticker star, hated color splash and hated origami king, it would be an absolute dream if the series returned to its roots permanently

OMG this reveal made me ABSOLUTELY HAPPY AND FULL OF JOY!!!!!! I’ve literally been wanting to play this game for OVER A DECADE, ever since I was a kid, but I could never get my hands on a copy, SO NOW I’M FINALLY GETTING THE CHANCE TO PLAY IT!!!!! Younger me would be so so happy to know this day is officially coming!!!
Good! Have you ever played the original? (PM64). That is absolutely a great way to hype yourself up for TTYD even more as they’re incredibly similar. Same with RPG (of which Paper Mario was originally called RPG2).
Part of the excitement from me as an older fanboy of TTYD is seeing younger people finally get to play it. I watched my nephew play through PM64 and he loved it.
I’m really hoping it’s that Nintendo is listening, because if so, it implies that long demanded localizations (most famously Mother 3), ports, or other long-time fan wants may actually come true

I really liked Color Splash and Origami King but yeah, I’d love to see a more traditional game again.
I loved sticker star and color splash but never tried origami king because the battle system looked unappealing... I can't wait to try TTYD though, everyone seems to love it
@barbwatchesyt4084 The battle system is definitely more enjoyable than that of CS/SS. Still relatively pointless compared to the original PM games.
@@shinigamimiroku3723 I'd say the one thing that TOKs combat does worse than SS and CS is tedious factor...TOK is just as stupidly easy as SS and CS are imo...yet battles takes soooooo long. Longer than they really should.
@slenderfoxx3797 Oh, definitely agree there, and it's a "necessary evil" due to the puzzle-like nature of the "combat."
@@shinigamimiroku3723 yeah. The combat is really just a giant long drawn out puzzle matching game. Once you find the perfect pre determined solution. It's a free win really. The enemies won't even touch you. All you do is a jump if they're in a line and a hammer If they're in a square. Its really redundant lol. Mind as well just have them die instantly once you finish the puzzle. I get that you can mess up the action command... but its incredibly easy. And all do you is press the A button. Gone are the variety of action commands.
Hopefully this remake sells better than Origami King so that we’ll be more likely to get new Paper Mario games in this style from now on. I’m a little worried though, since the reveal trailer for this remake hasn’t even gotten a million views yet and Origami King’s reveal trailer got over a million views in a day.
Now that you mention it, outside the Direct itself, none of the trailers have hit a million views (TTYD HD is the closest to it at 874K views, with Princess Peach Showtime coming in second). Very interesting
Origami king trailer was dropped on a random day of the week as the official announcement if I remember correctly. People probably don’t feel the need to rewatch a trailer they already saw in the direct

I'm not getting my hopes up too much for future paper mario games but if they announce something after this game has a massive success, I'd be willing to bet at least some issues will be fixed in future titles
If this sells, Paper Mario will head back on its RPG creative path again.

@@SuperMarioT I mean I agree with you with this, just saying I disagree with your original premise especially when it comes to Pokemon, although I do understand many have sadly given up they'd change - I'm still holding up like minsicule hope, hence why I think even some stagnancy on sales would have an effect there IMO.
They need to add Luigi's adventure in the Waffle Kingdom as extra content for the remake

Paper Mario 64 got skipped over. I love TTYD it's one of the best games of all time. Paper Mario 64 needed a remake, TTYD did not. It's still beautiful😭
I think PM64 still looks pretty charming to this day, though I'd love to see it get the HD2D treatment or something like that.

Not gonna lie was hopping for a shadow drop for TYD lol, looks so good I want to play it now.
To be honest, I don't think it was the paper aspect that sucked me into the first two Paper Mario games. Sure, that aesthetic was appealing and I enjoyed the way it was like walking around a storybook...but when it comes down to it a big part of what I loved about those games were their sense of humour and the unique cast of characters. The stories weren't complex but they were still engaging in my opinion.
Didnt really get the chance to play Super Mario RPG or the rest of the series of Paper Mario like the og amd TTYD but Ive gotta say they are sooo charming. Even though I havent finished them yet, its exciting that theyre getting remakes for everyone of us that mever got to experiemce them. Its going to be exciting, I hooe you all enjoy it all too❤
If this sells better than the Origami King then the future of Paper Mario will be promising
It's (likely) coming at the tail-end of a generation and if the Switch's successor somehow isn't backwards-compatible, it might be at a significant disadvantage. I hope the game can attract a lot of non-diehard fans nonetheless because that's what ultimately matters (The game would have to sell over 3.1 million units and outsell the second most successful game in the series by total numbers, worst by percentage of user base actually). If parents don't buy this for their kids (Like for featuring pretty dark themes) and young adults don't buy it for themselves, that might be pretty hard unless I severely underestimate diehard fans of traditional Paper Mario.

Never played TTYD, liked Sticker Star, absolutely LOVED Color Splash and Orimami King, so seeing a remake of TTYD makes me happy since for me it's more Paper Mario!

When I first played origami king I finished 8th grade when I play TTYD for the first time I will already finish high school by then
I also wish that we got a Combined Version of the first 2 Paper Mario games. Basically be given the option after beating the first game to take some or all your Partners with you and Keep them throughout the whole game including Chapter 4 as well as transfer over some of your Badges and Stats. That way you could have a lot of BP starting off the second game and work on your FP.
2010s were dreadful for Mario spin offs and especially the RPGs.
With all the creative restrictions apparently dead and the best RPG games being remade, I'm hopeful for a strong comeback.

Oh, and Superstar Saga got sanitized and made its Mario enemies generic on 3DS. That isn't happening to Super Mario RPG and The Thousand Year Door.
I'm speaking solely on the RPG side of things. I hope nay i pray both TTYD and the RPG remake do well and show Nintendo we want stories and characters that are fleshed out in our Mario RPG'S.

When I saw that storybook open at the end of the direct, I almost screamed. Having hoped for a remake of TTYD for quite a while, I still just couldn't believe it was really happening. Man, what a treat.

I don't know if I should buy 2 or 3 ttyd HD games. Feeling like buying the digital version, one to keep sealed and one to play, I just love this game and I don't know how to manifest all that love.
All I want now is an super paper mario remake or another game in the same style. I have gotten everything else I could want from mario.
Mario RPG and TTYD Remake give me the biggest hope for the future of Mario RPGS and maybe even Mario series as a whole. They let loose with designs, dialogue and more for the series.
I was watching you guys predict the direct and just off-handedly when i heard the Rogueport section of the Smash Paper Mario track i thought to myself "Man, that's probably going to be the only official remix of that track from Nintendo we will ever get for the rest of all time"
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that toad in glitzville is actually tied to a help center mission since it requires flurry and super boots which the player does not have access to at this point (they do have access to flurry, but some flurry points are not accessible unless a specific mission is accepted)

I never gave Origami King a shot, but knowing we are coming home and the king is returning I actually kind of fancy trying it.
I’d recommend trying Origami King, it’s a pretty good time outside of the battle system being a bit eh after a while
Wouldn’t it have made 100x more sense if they released Mario RPG, had a lot of success with it, and THEN announced PM:TYD in the Feb direct?
Maybe they happened to finish development around the same time and just got squeezed together in this period before Switch 2?

I never played the original TTYD, but I'm getting a copy of the remake once it releases!
It's possibly my favorite game ever! The story, while understandably simplistic, is really funny and sentimental at the best moments. The music is incredible.
My best advice - always be on the lookout for items/Shine Sprites in corners and areas accessible using all your special abilities (partners included). Can save you a lot of potential time backtracking if you miss it. I really hope you enjoy!
I honestly don't really think the movie is affecting Nintendo's decisions on their games side, it probably should but knowing Nintendo I don't think it is and honestly thank god too, Peach having her own game isn't because she needs to be updated or anything like that, the movie Peach had that very forced "badass female lead" trope that modern movies are rife with these days, whereas the Peach game feels like a natural creative output that stays true to the character.

Ah I watched Dereck's play through of Color Splash back in the day, it was really enjoyable, I hope he streams TTYD :)
I'm going to BEELINE it straight to Fire Emblem Toad when I pickup the remake.
Yeahhh!!! TTYD here shows that Nintendo actually LISTENS for once, and that gives me hope for the future of Nintendo. Mario Wonder already gave me some hope because of just how weird it is, and then to have not only SMRPG but **TTYD**- and specifically TTYD, the fan favorite, rather than the original N64 game, shows that they actually listen TO US.
They have done a great deal here to earn back the trust of the fanbase that had been lost completely. All we can hope now is that they don't throw that away again. Everyone should buy TTYD for switch, we need to speak with our wallets in a *positive* way this time! If they see this remake do well, it may just shape the future of the Paper Mario series for the better.... one can only hope.
As for what I like about Mario RPGs:
- Action commands, style of battles. TTYD battle system is perfection.
- Unique party members with unique field and battle abilities
- Level up system (star points) with choosable skills (hp, fp, bp)
- Unique areas
- Unique characters
- Story
TTYD hits all of these out of the park. I never got along with the original Paper Mario, the N64 just kinda... oof. I would love to play a remake of that at some point. I also loved Super Paper Mario, for the record! It was a nice switch-up, and while it did not contain the action-command style battles, it did have unique party members in the pixls, along with *other MAIN CHARACTERS* to play, which was just neat. Importantly, it had it's own unique areas, unique characters, and story- I loved the heck out of this game, in a completely DIFFERENT way than I love TTYD. Which, is why it was such a divisive game- even though I like it a lot as itself, I do not like it as "the future of Paper Mario", which was my one concern at the time (little did I know how much worse it would get...)

I had a similar idea of having a Paper Mario & Luigi game. It’d be M&L based game instead of a Paper Mario based game and simply called Paper Mario & Luigi.
I don't want to get my hopes up for the future until we see some sales numbers, but I'm glad they're at least willing to give this style of Mario games another shot.

I am very happy we're getting 2 remakes of the best Mario RPG titles out there and hopefully this will lead to an bright future for the Mario RPG'S. I would love an Paper Mario 64 remake get an same treatment as TTYD is getting if that ever happens.

My brother and I played The Thousand Year Door together as a kid, it was one of the few games I let him play while I sat back and watched (I'm the older brother, so he often ended up watching me play a game!), but with TTYD, I was content just watching, and helping him strategize. Later on, we both played the original Paper Mario side-by-side through emulation, so I personally have fonder memories of the original game than TTYD. I've made quite a few save files for TTYD over the years, but haven't made it even halfway through the game in any of them -- It's been close to a decade and a half since watching my brother play this game, so most of the game I've forgotten by now, and some of it I've never even seen. I think I'm ready to play this game after all this time, and so I'm excited to get my hands on this remake!
As for Mario RPG, I've started it before but haven't made it far into the game. I think I usually drop it during the Forest Maze -- Being able to play the new remake, on a handheld, will definitely help me get into a game I've never given a proper shot! It looks fun, and I've heard so many good things about it, but I was never very good at RPGs, and didn't get into the genre until last year really -- So, I'm excited to finally play these two games!
Yeah I hope they do away with the General White quest. I also hope they put a return pipe in Twighlight Town that goes back and forth between the town and the Creepy Steeple so we don’t have to do as much backtracking that chapter either (like maybe when you get to Creepy Steeple for the first time there’s a switch you can hit that makes the warp pipe back to town appear)
what about the line of dialogue when you get the super hammer saying it's a 2005 model will it change to 2025 model

Apparently the TTYD remake was actually leaked over a year ago. The leaker said it was last fall or something like that and as time passed it was believed to be a fake rumor when in reality plans just changed.
Yeah I remember hearing that. Then when they announced RPG was coming to Switch I was like “oh that settles it, TTYD is absolutely not coming”
Then that damn book appeared in the direct and everyone who played TTYD (without even seeing anything else) lost their minds lol.

In early nintendo games, Mario itself was sinonimus of freedom. The last 20 years, it becomes an easy formulaic cash grab with some creative twist. Its one better than the other? who knowns, Will we recive new creative games in the next decade? who knowns. One can only wonder....
The bland era was the result of the success of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The era between Mario Odyssey and Mario Wonder was a transitional period between the bland era and the greener pastures of the creative post-Wonder era.

I disagree immensely on the princess peach part. She was kicking ass all the way back on the NES with Super Mario Bros 2.
This video like absolutely sums ups my thoughts on Paper Mario and Mario as a whole, more succinctly than I think I could ever do. This is perfect! :) I'm soooo looking forward to the TTYD remake coming out! And I'm soooo glad that Nintendo is finally loosening the chain a little bit with what can be done with the Mario franchise. I hope other spin-off games are also allowed to get a bit creative again.

I think the games having the white outline is not a bad thing at all. In fact, its personally one of my favorite parts of modern paper mario games. And in general I adore the whole visual aesthetic of the modern paper mario games, which is why I love making Blender fan-art that takes inspiration from this art style.
HOWEVER, I do also like the new visual direction they are taking for the remake.
Man i really hope this really does mean the return of Classic style Paper Mario is possible, So many new enemies and friendly races have been introduced and RE-introduced since this game originally released that never got to get cool new Partner and NPC designs, But if this really does signal a change in the Paper Mario dev teams mindset and what Miyamoto will and will not allow Mario to be, i am super excited to see what a future Paper Mario game could entail just in terms of characters. Odyssey alone is home to so many fun new character designs that could really get a chance to shine in a future Paper Mario if it's allowed to get creative and weird with them, We could get partners based on enemies that had been forgotten about at the time but have since made a triumphant redebut like Ninji and galoombas. We could even get a Goombud from Mario maker 2 as a partner in the future, i would love that honestly, i love the Goombuds, they're so goofy.
And that's not even mentioning Super Mario Bros Wonder, All the new enemy and NPC designs in that game, the Paper Mario partners you could make with them! For the first time in my life, it feels rewarding to be a Mario fan! I REALLY hope this is actually a new era for Paper Mario and they don't just pour their hearts and souls into giving us a remake of the fan favorite of the series then for right back to where they left off with Origami king like it never happened, as much as i love Origami king, it's so frustrating to see the writers seemingly pushing and punching and kicking to give long time Paper Mario fans something, ANYTHING, and the higher ups just going "No, make it generic and boring!" They can't tease us like this with a remake where they go so above and beyond to make it so lovingly faithful down to almost every detail and then say "Now here is another game like Sticker star, never ask for anything ever again, we have you what you want!"
Everyone please buy Paper Mario TTYD remake so Nintendo will make paper mario like it was back in the good old days 🔥🔥🔥
I have a gut feeling SMRPG and TTYD will sell like hotcakes. I keep seeing so much hype for these games and people planning to buy multiple copies of said game. I'm also confident Nintendo's next console will be backwards-compatible. Not doing so would be suicidal.

I feel that the reveal for this game was too soon. They should have waited for the February direct after Super RPG woukd have been out and remake the original game. It's weird to skip that for this one.
I really enjoyed Super Paper Mario, Color Splash and Origami King, but it is so nice to see The Thousand-Year Door again. I wouldn't have minded a newer game either, but Thousand-Year Door is such a wonderfully unique game, and definitely the best out of the RPGs aside from Bowser's Inside Story. It is so good to have Mario getting more creative between different games once more!

I honestly don't mind if these recent Directs were had too much Mario content. Not only are we getting remakes of two of the best Mario RPG titles ever made, but we're also getting a new 2D Mario game that's about as creative and charming as Super Mario World and Super Mario Land 2. Plus a brand new game staring Peach as the main character. The whole Mario Mandate thing can hopefully be put to rest now thanks to these games.
Super Mario Odyssey was perhaps just the tip of the iceberg, because Nintendo probably wants to remind folks what made Mario so special in the first place. Overly optimistic of me to say, I know, but these are just things a lot of fans didn't think Nintendo was going to do. The real question is...why didn't they announce this stuff during the franchise's 35th anniversary?

Wasn’t it the Mario & Luigi remakes that finally ended Alphadream? Not saying that Nintendo will end (let’s be real) but I always figured remakes tend to happen when you’re out of ideas
