  • Who is Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Thailand’s New & Youngest Prime Minister? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
    The 37-year-old daughter of billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra has become Thailand's Prime Minister. Paetongtarn Shinawatra -- the youngest leader in Thailand's history as a constitutional monarchy and the second woman premier after her aunt Yingluck -- assumes office after two court rulings that threw the kingdom's politics into turmoil. Can she avoid the same fate as her father? Palki Sharma tells you.

    She helps Thai military and monarch to force her coalition partner popularly elected 'Pita' out of the game, put her own party member into PM office, a year later, got him boo out of office, now placing herself as the next Thailand PM to continue her father Dynasty. A game well played indeed.

    She has 2 ‘PM’ to guide her.
    She’s intelligent and well immersed in politics from a young age. Don’t think it will be an issue for her to run the country.
    Thaksin himself is very popular and liked especially in the North Eastern Thailand, Isaan.

      I think you a bit out of date and must have missed out on the orange wave of Move Forward that swept the country and won the last election but was not allowed to take power by the dinosaurs. Thaksin is now 75, spent 15 years abroad and his brand has faded significantly. The die hard red shirts in the North and Northeast, who still love Thaksin, are mainly over 50s. His old style image doesn't resonate much with the young in those areas.

      Thaksin is no longer all that popular in the Northeast. The over 50s still love him but the young people see him as an irrelevant old geezer from the past and voted for Move Forward. A lot of the die hard over 50s red shirts left the party after he stabbed Move Forward in the back and formed a coalition with the military parties who had ousted Yingluck. We'll see how popular he and his daughter still are at the next election.

    The downfall of dynastic politics, which is a key feature of the Shinawatra family’s political activities. If Paetongtarn is elected as prime minister, she will be the fourth person from the Shinawatra clan, following Thaksin himself, then Somchai (brother-in-law), Yingluck (younger sister), and Paetongtarn (daughter). This doesn’t even include other members of the clan who have entered politics, such as Jae Daeng, or people like Chaisit, whom Thaksin appointed as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces when he was prime minister.
    Why is dynastic politics the downfall of democracy? Because family ties are given more importance than actual abilities to perform duties within a democratic system. This blocks opportunities for those outside the family, other members of the party, or ordinary people with high capabilities but not enough power or money. They get sidelined simply because they aren’t part of the family. This monopolization of power fosters authoritarian political behavior because people voting in elections focus not on individual capabilities but on the family’s political influence. So, even if one claims that the people have elected them, it cannot be denied that this nurtures authoritarian behavior, where the choices for voters are predetermined.
    Thaksin openly admitted himself that he doesn’t trust people outside his family. That’s why we rarely see Thaksin promoting outsiders to represent his family. 😅

    Her downfall will be the doing of her corrupt dad who will face the constitution court for les majestic case which is jail term if convicted. Also I do foresee a coup if she does try to influence the court to help him and also bring her aunt convicted Yingluck back from exile.

    • @turtlex5994
      @turtlex5994 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You raise a good point. Thaksin wanted Sretta to stay on longer to do the digital wallet which might have landed him in jail, help him with his lese majeste case and bring Yingluck home. Now it is hard to do any of those things. He didn't mind the idea of Srettha going to jail for the digital wallet but can't afford to let this happen to Ung Ing who will come under attack for helping Thaksin and Yingluck get let off their criminal cases. Thaksin actually has to face the Criminal Court for his lese majese case, not the Constitutional Court.

    Whenever a Shinawatra takes power there are a few things you can count on: 1) It's just a matter of time before corruption rears its head and carefully calibrated protests pour out into the streets with lots of color and noise. 2) Blood is spilled and the tanks roll. 3) The army takes over and forms a ruling junta. 4) Or, of late, it's the courts that heed the call, and the Shinawatra family are forced back into exile in London or Dubai where the family owns mansions. Then a new government is hastily thrown together, sometimes without the benefit of elections. Since independence in 1932, Thailand has suffered 22 coups. But the US has a strong presence in the country via the state department and "affiliates." It's job is to steer Thailand out of China's orbit. The Shinawatras are aligned with China. That spells trouble from the outset.
