    Can't go wrong with Boston.
Many assumed it was the story of the band because the lyrics are in the first person and they sing about being from Boston, which they are, but that's not the case. Group leader Tom Scholz wrote the song based on conversations he had with Jim Masdea, a drummer who often collaborated with Scholz and had lots of war stories from playing in various bands. Masdea was always telling Scholz about struggling bands trying to get signed to record contracts

    • @daveyboygee
      @daveyboygee ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well, to tell the whole story, Tom had experience with this phenomena as he had to struggle to get their 1st contract. He did do the studio recordings with Jim and Brad but, when it came to sign on the dotted line, they had to put together the whole band to show they could do it live. Thus, the song rings true!

  • @bobwood63

Boston was really just one man instrumentally - Tom Scholz! He wrote all the music, and played every instrument on the albums, he knew Brad Delp from another band in Boston and got him for the vocals. When they toured, it was only Tom and Brad on stage that had been in the studios.

When Tom Scholz (guitar) of Boston wrote this song, he had never been on tour w/ a band... it was "pure fantasy".
No one anticipated that the 1976 debut album by Boston would sell over 16 million copies in the US and launched the band to superstar status... However, success would eventually destroy the original band that never made a 3rd album (which was recorded by Scholz, Brad Delp and new members of Boston). From that point on, Boston was Tom Scholz's show as people came & went from the band.

Tom also wanted wild, spacey sounds from his guitar but there were no pedals then that did what he wanted. So .. he invented the "Rockman" amplifier to get those tones out of his guitar. Check out a demo on YT. Tom is a genius!

Not the story of the band, as it's easy to assume. It started as one man in his basement who made the album by himslef (with the singer and drummer he hired), and it was an instant success by the tiem he had a full band to tour with.

Ya. The seventys started a whole new era in music. Lots of god gifted talents and new evolutions in instruments. Mind the fifty's and sixties we're good. But legendary musicians and vocalist had to really compete. Music hit another level. And then the classic rock eighties hit. Wow what a ride. I was ten years old in 1975. Wow like I said, what a ride from there.

I was in high school when this record dropped. Everybody had it blasting out of their cars and, when they came to Macon, GA, everybody stood in line for advance tickets. It was so much easier to get tickets that way, without using Ticketmaster and such, and concerts were a whole lot cheaper. Believe it or not, you could see 3 top-named bands for as little as $6.00.

You know the ironic thing about that first Boston album? It laid the blueprint for what people derisively called "arena rock" or "corporate rock" for years - bands like Journey, Styx, Foreigner, etc. - but yet it was basically exactly like a viral home recording project today. It's absolutely the most homemade smash hit album in rock history. It was the instrumental vision of one man, Tom Scholz, coupled with the none-of-a-kind vocals of Brad Delp singing Queen-like harmonies with himself, and drummer Sib Hashian underpinning it all - and the actual band was put together after the project got picked up by Epic Records. It was the furthest possible thing from "corporate" - one guy and two or three of his buddies invented the sound of late 70s and early 80s rock in his basement.
Which, by the way, is also to say that the backstory in this song is just that, a story. They had an idea to write a banger of a song about a hard-working band that hits it big - and wrote and recorded it in Tom Scholz's basement, LOL.

The band Boston was created by Tom Scholz in the basement of his rented house where he built a sound recording studio and even created some of the equipment used to create that "Boston Sound" and record the first album. One the best sounding rock albums ever recorded.

If there was ever one band that came out with a debut album of this magnitude, and could quit making albums. This would the the band AND the album!!!!

In various other Genres there are a few of the same concept. The Clash-The Clash, Black Sabbath-Black Sabbath, Ramones-The Ramones, Jimi Hendrix-Are You Experienced, NWA-Straight Outta Compton, Zep-Zep etc. Thank goodness we got more from all of them including Boston.

I would like to thank you, Asia, for starting the "shoulder groove" thing for me. I just have to remember that due to my neurological condition, I have to do the shoulder groove when no one is around or they'll think I'm starting to have a seizure! 😉

This was the opening song when I heard them live in the fall of 1978. Sammy Hagar warmed up for them. Great concert!

I was at that Concert pairing in Toronto that year. The Red Rocker ripped it up, then Boston put everyone away. Interesting pairing at the time. Almost like when Bob Seger opened for Kiss at the Niagara Falls Convention Center in 79 I think. Poor Bob got booed of the stage by the 13 year olds. What the hell was Bob Seger opening for KISS?

One of Boston's best songs, with some true to life stories, and some ripping guitar work by Tom Scholz, screaming vocals by Brad Delp (RIP), and stellar backing work by Sib Hashian (great Afro) on Drums, Barry Oakley on Bass and damn it I can't remember the other guitar player's name right now. Someone out there will know.

Jim Masdea plays drums on this track (stated in the liner notes). The other guitarist you're trying to think of is Barry Goudreau. Fran Sheehan was their bass player. However, on this song I believe Scholz plays all guitar tracks & bass.

@@roccaclassico9028 Fran Sheehan and Barry Goudrerau, Thank You. Think I got my Bass players mixed up, Barry Oakley was in The Allman Brothers Band. Oops. Yeah, Fran Sheehan and Barry Goudreau. Jim Maseda did the drums, no Sib. But Sib had the best hair ever, no doubt there.
