Hundreds of dollars spent on jazz-theory books. Hundreds of improvisation-tutorial videos watched. Decades of listening to Charlie Parker and of playing. And I got more out of this 16-minute video than all that, with a beautiful Daily Affirmation thrown in for free at the end.
The end is gold. I feel like that could be a great short. Learning things in 12 keys is still daunting to me after daily practice for 3 years. I'm just gonna learn stuff in the 3-4 keys I play the most. Thanks!
Scales is my biggest neglect and I appreciate the expert tips in improving my knowledge so I can play these more fluently, listening to how you explain it makes it so much easier for me to understand it and learn Jazz as I feel It's growing on me and I am loving this! Thank you so much for all you give!
I have to take anti-anxiety/overwhelming breaks tho.. set down the sax, relax&take slow deep breathing exercises bc I'm so excited & get so worked up w joy when I'm playing& sounding prety good that I am making very good progress in short time as well..(Whew! said that all in one breath) Sometimes I even spin around in circles for no apparent reason when i'm playing.. idk, what you think that is?@@drwallysax
As usual, thank you very much. I haven't been in the shed with diatonic 7ths for ages. Time to get back. Anyway, thank you for the free transcription. It's weird that you have to remind people to enjoy playing their saxophones.
Great as always Doc. Totally enjoyable. What got me was taking things out of the fundamentals book and thinking of those concepts to the Parker phases. 7th arpeggio up, chromatic down. As an intermediate player, what I am doing is listening to the phases you played, then repeating them by singing to get the feel of the style. Works wonders once the button pushing is figured out. Wishing you much success in 2024! P.S. saw what you did, using a white mouthpiece. A tip of the hat to history.
Great news you going to d these videos regularly, looking forward to rhytmic hacking. Ps, I learnt c harmonic minor tonight, very happy because my mouthpiece wasnt squeaking. Thanks Doc
uah! i m Italian and you are my English teacher too! listening your speaking is so mesmerizing and funny and amusing... great wisdom in amazing video! this is better than game of thrones... winter is (not) coming! 😂💥💥💥🎷🎷🎷💥💥💥 ah... almost forgotten: i love the sound of your playing! uah... really ❤️🎷❤️
Dr Teacher, only this: GREAT. Thanks for this... really. I am improving my playing, very detailed with the genious oh Charlie.. Is there any change of making some videos about GIANT STEPS from Coltrane??
Great video, Dr. Wally! I like how you broke the solo down into simple parts and did not inject contrived complexity, such as shells, cells, and encumbered enclosures. When you mentioned practicing in related keys and consider the shapes more than the individual notes, are you alluding to how the lines "fit" under the fingers and is musical? I have noticed that alto solos transposed to tenor and vice-versa are often too high or too low to be musical and don't sit well for the instrument. I think it is more important to practice transcribed solos untransposed to gain a better understanding of what's happening musically than to be able to win the technical prize by practicing Charlie Parker's solo in all 12 keys.
I just wanted to say thank you for your fundamentals course, I'm following it and having great fun. You didn't do the "listening homework" for every month did you? I can't find them. Anyway thanks a lot for all your content, it's really appreciated.
Hey there, good ear! It's actually the final prototype of my new product line. This is the Hyperion mouthpiece. The internals are a micro CT scan of Brian Curry's best Great Neck (ebolin, actually). It wasn't for sale but part of his private collection. We played his 20(ish) not-for-sale pieces and both chose this one. The facing and externals are being finalized into the updated product. So, an updated Great Neck in a new package!
Very nice video Wally. Sorry you don’t have a budget for a professional videographer, but I appreciate you not editing this down to 2 minutes removing every blink, pause, and breath. After watching 30 days of Bird, I have been inspired to study Bird myself. I’ve noticed he recycles “phrases” all the time. I bet I could find a dozen other tunes with these examples or close variations. Nice job…this was great! I appreciate the content and work put into these videos. And sounding great as always.
Yes, good ear hank! He has a vocabulary (that many many have copied). It's a great lesson in being an artist - he doesn't play like Hawkins, Desmond, Coltrane, and others - he plays like himself. He has a language, and uses it!

Great video! And great advice at the end about being a mad scientist and having fun. I needed that.
we all need a reminder, from time to time, that this is supposed to be fun!!! Hope you enjoy it!
Excellent stuff! A master class, with wisdom and humour added

This is the way
Glad to hear that you are doing well!! Keep up the videos, I share them with my students.
Man, I WANT that mouthpiece, Dr. Wally! Another quality video from the master. Thank you, sir!

My absolute pleasure, so glad you're enjoying them.

Interestingly, I started revisiting the tune at the beginning of the week. Some fresh insights. Thank you.

Weird, indeed! But, necessary (and a reminder to myself as well)!

Ah, the mouthpiece is part of my new product line: Hyperion! I'm playing the prototype in this video, based on the internal shape of Parker's piece ;)
Thank you for this inspiring and motivating video! ❤ Looking forward to the next one!
You are so welcome! See you next week!
The usual excellent standard of lesson, top shelf but easy to reach, and bonus Bonnie.
yay! Someone got the reference!

Hey, that's fantastic! Harmonic minor and on the path to mastery. Well done, David! Now go practice ;)

Excellent!!!
Thanks, Glenn! Happy Wednesday!
well done
Thanks my friend ;)
Thank you so much daddy. Please do you have any lessons for tenor saxophone players
Most lessons are for both - but this being Charlie Parker, just for alto! We'll have tenor lessons as well, no worries.
Hey Doc... is that a Brilhart - Great Neck ... Which number ? Kindest wishes,

Ah, and I JUST put the siding on the shed!
You're not out practicing with the lawnmower, we're bonus-rooming dammmit!
😂

I once played at a jam session with a bass player who suggested we play "Donna Lee by Jaco Pastorius". He is no longer with us.
hhhaaaaaa!!!! That recording is nuts. I don't like it, but I can appreciate it. Sort of. Good call!
Get this man a graphic team lmaaaao I have to learn the patterns in all 12 keys tho cuz my prof said so 🤣
If you're in music school, you best listen to the fancy professor-pants!
Oh Donna ….Oh Donna
Who? Where? WHAT!!!??
Hi Dr. Wally, was wondering since I'm the first to comment...am I on time for class? no? I guess I'll get back to practicing and just use the rewind.
Your right on time ;) Happy practicing! (and do rewind your VHS tape of the video).
😅🤣😂@@drwallysax
I don't agree with the hobby part, to me it's not a hobby, at this playing level it's serious.
Whatever floats your boat! For me, it's an amazing hobby.
