That photo of yourself holding your daughter looking at empty raising beds is a masterpiece. It made me feel something. I don't know how to describe it. It's like those artistic photos that hold great stories behind them. A piece of art.

I agree, no pebbles! Pebbles are very hard to move if you decide you don't want them. Wood chip will break down all on there own.
I ended up just putting down the woven high quality weed block fabric with nothing over it between my big raised bed garden. I don't like the look, but I can walk barefoot even in midday sun in AL on the fabric. I can blow off leaves and debris year round to keep it neat. I found it is better to let the fabric go under the beds a little and then secure it to the inside edges of the bed before filling them with dirt. But where I didn't do that, weeds grow in the gap between the fabric and bed around the beds. At least they are usually easy to pull out and I get plenty of volunteer veggies and flowers and herbs to transplant to other areas. I don't use wood chips or other stuff in the walkways as I can't get a steady supply of it, nor do I have time and energy to put it out by myself if I had enough stuff to put in the walkways. I run our farm full time mostly alone, plus do all the house and kitchen work, gardens, livestock care, etc while my husband works off the farm. No children left at home either to help. Since putting the fabric down, I no longer have snakes in the garden. But there are voles, moles, rats and mice that tunnel under it and in the raised beds that are 6" high. But they don't get in the 12" & 18" beds so I use the drier beds for root crops and actually get a good harvest.
I have been watching you on your homestead since before you moved to this property. I think y'all have come along very far and fast in the last two years. God bless y'all, remain patient, learn as you go and most of all---Keep Growing!!!

Just a thought about the beet tops - I dehydrate my greens and then grind them and save them in a jar. When I make soup or a smoothie I pour some in. It's a great way to add greens during the time you can't grow greens. For me in South Florida that is during the summer months.

What an accomplishment! The garden looks so good and the family and animals well fed.
There is a lady from Australia where I’m from, who lays cardboard, leaves, weeds, manure, wood chips between her garden rows (In ground) beds which you may be interested in. Her channel is Huttons Valley Permaculture, by doing this she just piles the now composted material on to her rows for her next planting. I like this idea as you don’t need to walk or transport anything as it’s right there between your rows & it stops weeds.

My adopted mother was Slovak. Her name was Stella Schebesta.
Southern style: fry up 1 lb bacon in a pot, leave all grease & bacon ( cut up into pieces)in the pot. Cut up 1 large head of cabbage. Put in 2 handfuls of cabbage in pot, season with salt, pepper, & sugar, stir into bacon , repeat until all cabbage is in pot, stir & simmer until cabbage is soft. Serve over steamed rice. Eat with cornbread, makes a delicious dinner!

You can also can coleslaw to enjoy in the winter months! I like to freeze cabbage leaves for future cabbage rolls. So glad to see your efforts are successful.

When you plant corn, plant it in blocks instead of rows. It allows the plants to support each other during windy weather.

You can boil the turnip greens and the cabbage with bacon grease and boil the water very low. Soooo good! Also, cabbage freezes well to cook later. I like to fry cabbage too. Love it!

your gardens look wonderful:) FYI putting down cardboard with no stickers or compostable paper then wood chips make great soil for the gardens in a year or two. I have one more suggestion hill your corn it helps it stand up better.
Lorraine you had me laughing guessing what some of the veggies are in the greenhouse. I planted tons of vegetable and flower seeds then totally messed up the labels when I planted them out. And I thought I was being so organized. Good thing I like surprises! 😊

Sunlight and rain would account for more progressive heads on the cabbages outside. Each rain drop releases nitrogen, amongst other stuff, when it hits a leaf. The high tunnel offers filtered light. But in saying that, it makes for staggered harvesting which is convenient. The gardens look great, I’m very jealous.

I am growing Serrano, Poblano Jalapeno and Hababero for my Latina friend. I am also trying Chayote for her and I am excited for them because I have never heard of this squash before. I am growing bells , Sweet banana, and lipstick peppers as well.

To me, seeing how you have increased the amount and styles of gardening since moving to this property is amazing! All 3 areas are beautiful and so productive, I could practically taste everything you’re growing! I heard Lorraine say she’s thinking about pebbles for between beds because they’re not pokey like wood chips but my daughter put them between her rose beds and I think they’re hard to walk on because they roll. I like the picturesque ideas of grass or pebbles but they take work and time you may not have for now when there’s so much that needs to be done. An inexpensive, fairly easy to do now and change later is using cardboard with chips on top. Appliance stores often have large boxes that end up in the trash so taking them for mulch is better for you and the environment. The cardboard is heavyweight so one layer is plenty. Also, there’s often a tree service or even the electric company that would be happy to dump wood chips on your property. Another source might be an Amish sawmill or anyone who has a sawmill. Those chips are smaller and without the occasional small branch that slips through without being chipped up. If your mower has a hitch on the back or something to hook or tie onto, you could pull a Gorilla Cart or some other wagon filled with chips between the raised beds and dump or shovel the chips out. My cart has a dump bed which is very helpful for me at 71 and not nearly as strong as I once was! If you want to know an easier way to do something ask an older person, especially old ladies since we’ve never been as strong as men even in our best of times but we usually figure out a way to get things done! 👵🏻😉
I don't like wood chips around my beds either Lorraine. There is a severe weed problem in my neighborhood and those wood chips would get full of weed seeds and grow. So much easier to keep grass and burn out the weeds with a torch. Plus i do like to walk barefoot in my garden 😊. I am so happy for your family to have upgraded your farm. Y'all have done a tremendous job fixing it up. Much lovecto the family and God bless you all ❤.
Beautiful harvest! When we have excess cabbage, I slice slaw style and freeze to pull out all year for "egg roll in a bowl," pot stickers, or actual egg rolls. It cooks up beautifully and delicious even after months of storage. Love seeing you rehab this land
I miss cilantro in summer too. So I make cilantro pesto. Yum.

I just figured out that equal amounts shredded cabbage and cilantro makes an awesome slaw. Its a great way to use up cilantro when you have a lot of it.
If you have a freeze dryer all your vegetables and herbs are wonderful to freeze dry plus it is wonderful to have all those vegetables year round

Y’all have a nice garden going on! One of the ways we found that we really enjoy our cabbage is to slice some into strips and then fry it with some bacon, jalapeños, and garlic… so good!!!
Have you thought about an overhead watering system? That way you don't have to mess with the water hoses each time you plant. Another way we did it when I was a kid was to make moats around the plants and just put the hose there. It would fill the moat up with water and was easy. You could do pvc down the side of the high tunnel and put spigots at each row and just adjust the flow. Then put an automatic timer at hose bib.

Pull up the dirt on the side of the corn to give the stalk more stability. If the stalk looks weak again, add more dirt.
Hi guys,when your sellery gets a little taller put tubes over them it will get them nice and white and keep them clean and free from dirt.
