What timing. I've been chasing a random, sporadic clangy/grinding noise on my 2011. I checked out my alternator - and thought it was operating correctly with free rotation in both directions of the pulley, holding the alternator stator shaft and locking in one direction (clutch operating as expected) - so I've been looking elsewhere. Then I found your video - as soon as I heard that same clangy, random noise - I thought I was listening to my own video :) Thanks for posting this!

Your videos are so good!! Took me a minute to figure out that you were working from below with the Sprinter on a lift. Unfortunately, I don't have a life, but, fortunately, the Sprinter sits high, so hopefully I can do it laying on my back. Thanks again.

Just noticed the van has over 360K miles (7:22)... Mines is a baby at 120K. I hope it will survive that long...

it seems easy
i see a lot of oil in my alternator surely that killed it right?
could I get an oil leak somewhere in that front of the engine? is that common?

No sir, that is not common. Check the front and bottom area of your engine. It sounds like you may have a small leak in that area. And the fan could be blowing oil toward the alternator.

So you left the positive cable connected to both batteries?

Yes Sir, as long as the Neg Battery Post is not connected. The power to the vehicle is dead.

A CARQUEST alternator has failed. Let me replace it w/ another Carquest alt.
VALEO or Bosch is a better built unit.
