On holiday in Italy we had an accident involving one of the earlier 9000 models (about 20ish years ago). The Fiat which hit us hit us at least 35/40mph in the rear and hit us so hard it launched the top box off the roof into the next lane (miracously this didn't involve a second accident and we continued to use that top box for years afterwards). Unsurprisingly we were okay (except the video camera in the boot!) - whereas some people in the Fiat had to be cut out and rushed to hospital. Despite the poor weather conditions, thanks to the both the Saab and my Dad's driving we were able to avoid going into the vehicle in front.

      You're lucky, that wasn't a safe car.

      I saved 4 from the Scrapyards. A 900 classic 2.1i, a 900ng Convertible 2.3i, a 9-5 estate 2.3t and now a 9000 2.3t (lpt, soon to be fpt)
Bought all of them with fairly big issues.. But all fixable. And since they dont make any more, I dont see why the few remaining schould be scrapped. (Unless absolutely totalled or rotten)

Seeing that 9000 getting rear ended actually hurts to watch now... I'm still looking for a nice reflector plate for my recently bought 9000 cse project. 😅 and they're difficult to find now.

There's another video floating somewhere of that includes the story of a father pulling out into the path of an articulated truck and getting completely wedged under the trailer after being hit at about 50mph. Him and his young daughter survived and were virtually uninjured after being helped out of their 9-3 sedan. I have one of these, too. The cars are pains to maintain to a showroom standard but absolutely solid on the road. My 9-3 is my first and so far only car I've had, not looking to change it any time soon.

This video shows really well why SAAB went bankrupt. You can’t put this much money on R&D on a single model and still remain competitive on the market.

They didn't, these cars are from the GM recycling dustbin.

Saab went far further than what GM wanted them to quickly modify on the Opel Vectra bases they were giving them, but considering Opel were not much profitable, GM was I think use to loose money with its european branches 😅

I drove 400km last week in a 1 year old merc e-klass in slippery conditions with great studded tyres. The roadfeel in the merc was no way near to what my 1984 900 manages to transfer. I have driven over a million kilometers in old the 900 in all sorts of conditions and have never felt that level of safety and confidence in any other car.

The only way a Saab's safety cage is gonna be crushed is if it's hit by a train on a level crossing!

I thought the Saab 900 NG had terrible deformation of the passenger cell in offset impacts as a result of using the Vauxhall Cavalier floor pan…
